Rules Q&A
- Q: Card set 1
Death after Life Reaction: After one of your Personalities is destroyed during battle: Lose 5 Honor. Target a dead Personality in your discard pile, or in any discard pile if you are a Spider Clan player. Permanently give him Shadowlands and Undead. Bring him into play in your current army, ignoring restrictions (paying all costs).
Fatina Reaction: Even if Fatina is bowed, after a Personality is destroyed: Create a 2F/2C/0PH Shadowlands, Undead, Ghul Personality in your current army or your home. Lose 2 Honor.
--- Card set 2
The Empress' Address Political Reaction: After one of your Personalities is destroyed while in a defending army, bow one of your target Courtiers or Empresses: Target a non-unique Personality with your clan alignment in your discard pile. Bring him into play in your home, waiving all costs. Gain 2 Honor.
Kakita Noriko Reaction: After one of your Crane Clan Personalities is destroyed during a battle or for losing a duel, bow Noriko: Gain Honor equal to the destroyed Personality's Personal Honor.
---
I think the same ruling would apply for both, but I thought I'd check.
My opponent destroies my peronality. Assuming all costs/triggers are met for Death after Life, if I have a dead Fatina, may I still react with Fatina to create a ghul after bringing her into play with death after life or has the opportunity passed?
My opponent destroies my defending crane personality. I react with Empress' Address, pay all costs, and bring back a Kakita Noriko from my discard pile. May I yet react with Noriko to the destruction of my personality?
A: The timing is the same.
You may use Kakita Noriko's Reaction after The Empress' Address and you may use Fatina's Reaction after bringing her back via Death After Life. Dan Jacobson, "Timing(?) questions", 23 Mar 2009 - Q: I have Fatina in play with a random samurai and a random shugenja. I attach A Terrible Oath to the random shugenja, and then use its action to kill the random shugenja and samurai as costs. If I react with Fatina's ability after my samurai is destroyed to create a Ghul personality, will that personality be in play by the time A Terrible Oath resolves to receive the +2F/-1C Oath token?
A: Yes. The Reaction is occuring during the cost payment, which is long before any effects happen. Zen Faulkes, "Fatina + A Terrible Oath", 17 Mar 2009 - Q: In response to "http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=69270"
Fatina - "Reaction: Even if Fatina is bowed, after a Personality is destroyed: Create a 2F/2C/0PH Shadowlands, Undead, Ghul Personality in your current army or your home. Lose 2 Honor."
Will - "Dark Virtue Battle: If there are any enemy units at the current battlefield, target a dead Samurai Personality you own: Bring him into play there, paying 2 less Gold and ignoring Honor Requirements."
Army - "One or more units in a given side at a battlefield. A side with no units is not an army."
Now this is excluded for the following... "When "army” is used to refer to a side of a battle that units are being moved to, assigned to, entering play in, or created in, this does not imply that an army must already exist there; the location can have no units to begin with, as an army is being brought into existence there."
So why is Will not able to be used to create presence at a battlefield, when the glossary states that it should be able to if an army is being brought into play there by the action? My reasoning being that if Will doesnt work, then Fatina would not as well, because the failed definition would be "army", not the lack of presence at the battlefield, since Will obviously creates a unit at the battlefield, no? (I tried to do a search on Will, but there are too many results).
Thx for explaining~
A: As a Battle action, Will must satisfy the Rules of Presence and Location. In particular, unlike, say, Unwavering Assault, it cannot create Presence:
The Rule of Presence: Battle actions can only be taken by a player who controls a unit at the current battlefield. EXCEPTION: A player who controls no units at the current battlefield can take an Action if its costs or effects say they can move one or more of his units there. He must then make choices within the action, if possible, such that it does move one or more of his units there, fulfilling Presence. This Exception does not apply to effects that create a unit, or cause a unit to enter play at the current battlefield; such effects still require pre-existing Presence.
Fatina's ability is a Reaction, so it does not need to satisfy Presence or Location. Alex Jones, "In regards to Created Presence", 8 Jul 2008 - Q: If it doesn't straight RFG the card, would Fatina trigger off the then implied destruction of the personality?
A: Even though I've effectively answered this, I thought it bore underscoring:
There is no implication of destruction from effects that remove a card from play by any other means (removal from game/discarding from play); they don't destroy unless they say "destroy". Brook Cunningham, "Jackal's Kiss vs Hall of Ancestors", 16 Jun 2008
