Rules Q&A
- Q: Can Feeding on Flesh be cast by a person outside of the battle to target someone in the battle? I would think not, since page 90 of the Diamond Rulebook says:
p90 wrote:
A ranged attack must target a single card opposing the card or cards making the ranged attack
And since presumably the caster would be making the ranged attack, they would need to be actually opposing the person they want to shoot, right?

A: No, for the reasons you stated. Zen Faulkes, "Feeding on Flesh", 26 Mar 2005 - Q: From the FAQ online.
"Effects are considered to come from the card they are written on. When a Shugenja casts a ranged attack Spell, the Spell is the card producing the attack, even though the Shugenja is performing the action."
So if this is true, Feeding on Flesh is producing the range attack, not the Shugenja, so the Shugenja need not be in the battle.
However it also means the attack is always illegal regardless of where your Shugenja is coming from since Feeding on the Flesh is never in the battle and cannot oppose cards.
Personally I think the way we've been playing Feeding on Flesh for the past two years is correct (Shugenja casts it from outside the current battle to target a card inside the current battle).

A: Refer to the text of Feeding on Flesh: Martin Lund, "Feeding on Flesh - again", 26 Mar 2005 - Q: Bow one of your Shugenja or Monks for a ranged attack whose strength equals the Chi of the Personality in the target's unit.
A: Ranged Attacks target "opposing" cards.
Well, "opposing" can't refer to Feeding on Flesh, as it isn't in an army.
Does Feeding on Flesh's text refer to a card that can be in your army?
As a matter of fact, it does - the Shugenja or Monk that bowed to cast it.
So "opposing" in this context means "opposing the caster."
Just like Steel on Steel says, "One of your Personalities issues an unrefusable challenge to an opposing Personality." Obviously Steel on Steel can't be opposed, but the Personality mentioned can be.
If you play an Action that has no references to a card that you could have opposed and it can not itself be opposed (Rain of Death, Tsuruchi Technique, Arrows from the Woods), then you fall back to "opposing any cards you control."
So basically you have 3 meanings for "opposing" in reference to cards:
1.) Opposing a previously mentioned card.
2.) Opposing the card with the Action on it.
3.) Opposing any card you control.
You have to figure out which one is applicable due to the context of the exact card text - and sometimes rulebook text if the card uses a short-hand term with a longer definition like "Challenge," "Duel," or "Ranged Attack." Martin Lund, "Feeding on Flesh - again", 26 Mar 2005
