Rules Q&A
- Q: Here's one I thought of (while building a deck, natch...)
Relevant Card texts:
Fight to the Setting Sun Reaction: Play this card when a Resolution Segment in which you had units ends. All units in the battle will bow as if they were attacking Units.
Rallying Cry Reaction: Play this card after a Resolution Segment. Your units in the battle do not become bowed by the combat.
Now, I'm pretty sure that it is as straightforward as it looks, but I want to be absolutely sure, so here are a couple of questions:
1. Rallying Cry will prevent bowing, either for the Attacker, or the Defender???
A: It will prevent bowing of all units in that battle controlled by the person who plays it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 June 2002", 26 Jun 2002 - Q: To play [Fight to the Setting Sun], you have to have had units in the battle WHEN it resolved, Not just at any time during the battle??
A: "...when a Resolution Segment in which you had units..." Correct. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 June 2002", 22 Jun 2002 - Q: [Fight to the Setting Sun] CAN NOT be used in reaction to someone playing Rallying Cry at the end of the battle resolution to counter RC's effects?
A: Fight to the Setting Sun is *always* played first, because it is played "when" the Resolution Segment ends, whereas Rallying Cry is played "after." Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 June 2002", 22 Jun 2002 - Q: So we had a timing/semantics question about Fight to the Setting Sun and Rallying Cry...
Player A attacks player B. At the end of the resolution segment, Player A plays Rallying Cry. *Then* player B plays Fight to the Setting Sun.
A: Bzzzt! Fight is played "when" the Resolution Segment ends. Rallying Cry is played "after" the end. Fight *must* be played first.
Regardless, if both are played, Rallying Cry "wins". Fight to the Setting Sun alters which rule you use to determine whether units bow; it does not bow them itself. Rallying Cry prevents bowing from rulebook rules. Jeff Alexander, "post for 26 March 2002", 27 Mar 2002 - Q: Fight to the Setting Sun reads:
Reaction: Play this card when a Resolution Segment in which you had units ends. All units in the battle bow as if they were attacking units.
Some questions and different scenarios popped up about this. I have one view while a couple people argued against me with two other points of view but I think it is pretty clear cut. However, we would like an official or at least other peoples opinions. Here are the different scenarios in which it was thought this card could be played.
A) Player 1 attacks province 1. Once province 1 resolves, player A loses the personality that died during resolution and plays this card. This is how I think it works for it states right on the card they need personalities there during Resolution.
A: Correct. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 February 2002", 1 Mar 2002 - Q: I think the real question here is, is a personality considered to have been in a battle if they call a different battle and move them in. So were they considered to be at the other provence? The cards first line is: Play this card when a resolution segment in which you "HAD" units ends.
A: There must have been units in that battle at some point during the Resolution Segment that just ended. (Note that it's very hard to move units around during resolution!) Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 February 2002", 1 Mar 2002 - Q: Rallying Cry - Many of the problems with this card would disappear if it received the same change as Fight to the Setting Sun.
A: That you could only play it in a battle where you had units? That you play it at the end of the resolution segment, as opposed to after it ends? Either way, I don't think that Rallying Cry is the problem. It's a card that works intuitively with its current wording, and people have been using it with complete understanding of how it worked since Imperial. The problem is that timing rules have changed to the point where Counterattack happens off the same timing window as Rally. *That's* a problem. I think messing with Rallying Cry is the wrong way to fix it. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 14th", 14 Aug 2001 - Q: Question: If you react to any resolution first with Fight to the Setting Sun, then a second reaction with Rallying Cry, will your troops rally? IIRC, they would.
A: Indeed, they would. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 14th", 14 Aug 2001
