Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Fire and Air 2G 2FV Elemental Battle: Bow this Shugenja for a Ranged 2 Attack. Elemental Battle: Once per turn, without bowing, move this unit to an adjacent Province." [MRP, Web of Lies, 7 December 2004] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 63
- Erratum: Fire and Air: The second ability does not require bowing the Shugenja. [MRP] Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, May 21, 2003, p. 15
Rules Q&A
- Q: The ability to move from province from Fire and Air can be used when the shugenja is bowed?
A: No (Diamond rules, pg. 54). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 December 2003", 13 Dec 2003 - Q: This is a request for clarification of the wording of a Broken Blades card: Palm Strike.
According to the rulebook, I have to bow a Monk or Shugenja in order to cast a Kiho. This Kiho lacks the words, "Bow one of your ...." Instead, it says, "Target one of your ...." This seems much like the Fire and Air intent/MRP.
So, the questions that I have are:
1) Do I have to bow the Monk to cast this Kiho?
A: No. This is ERRATA. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 August 2002", 20 Aug 2002 - Q: Ok quick question, does the second ability on Fire and Air target so that after a Shugenja uses the spell they can move to another province to stay alive?
A: It does target the Shugenja. It can't be used if she's bowed. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 June 2002", 6 Jun 2002 - Q: Here's a question for you, came up in a local pick-up game. Does the mere act of ATTACHING the spell "Fire and Air" count as those actions for purposes of Master of Five?
A: No. [AOF rulebook p. 34] Actions written on cards pick up traits only from the one card they're written on, and actions that aren't on a card -- like lobbying for the Favor or attaching a Spell from your hand -- do not acquire traits from any card. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 March 2002", 23 Mar 2002 - Q: I guess this is kind of a question for the design team.... I was looking at the card Fire and Air from APC and noticed that the first action says to bow the shugenja and the second action does not, it just say "once per turn". At first I though this meant that the shugenja can use it to move into an adjacent battle and still be able to range attack (or fling a Kiho, or whatever...). But then I remember a longstading rule from the Rulebook. "A Shugenja must bow to use a Spell unless the Spell CLEARLY INDICATES OTHERWISE." (A Perfect Cut Rulebook, p.62.) That means you have to bow to use the second ablility on Fire and Air even though it doesn't say so because it doesn't specifically say not to. Is this right?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 7 September", 11 Sep 2001 - Q: I would like to know if it`s possible to use spells on bowed personalities?
The same for weapons on bowed personalities that do not require a personality to bow to use its abillity!
Some spells to not required that i have a unbowed personality to use the spell effect ex: Fire and Air: Air Battle: Move this shugenja to an adjacent, unresolved battlefield or move him home.
Thanks again and sorry for the pour wording english is not my first language!
A: Yes, you can use abilities on unbowed Spells and Items even if their Personality is bowed.
As long as bowing the Personality isn't a condition upon taking the action, like this one or you have to bow the Personality as a condition upon the later effect happening, like the second ability on this one, the Spell will work fine. Brook Cunningham, "Spell Question!", 19 May 2014
