Rules Q&A
- Q: Hey all, I was hoping one of the rules boys could tell me the definition of a "standard duel", as in the type that is fatal by default. Considering A Game of Go explicitly states death doesn't occure while Stormheart reminds us that it does I'm a little lost as to what is lethal by default and what a card has to have to make it non lethal.
So yeah, what defines a 'standard' lethal duel, and what does it take to overide the rulebook effect of death for losing?
Thanks.
A: [MARTY] A standard duel consists of the duel mechanics stated in the Rule Book and nothing else. Challenged Personality has first option to Focus or Strike. Focus to add to Chi. Strike and compared Chi. Loser Dies. That's all. That's the abbreviated run-down on what a duel defaults to.
Any other bells, whistles, or changes need to be explicitly added by some sort of in-game effect. If part of the duel is defined by card effects, don't impose the default.
So, if you have an Iaijutsu Lesson, the loser is Bowed - not Bowed AND Destroyed.
If you have a Test of Might, you compare Force - you don't compare both Force AND Chi. Martin Lund, "Rules for 31 March 2004", 2 Apr 2004
