Rulings
- Playing the Terrain counts as an additional action. [Empire at War rulesheet] If the Terrain is not legal to play at the time of the additional action, remove the created card from the game. The Terrain entering play is a rulebook effect, and is not prevented by effects that look for card effects or effects of actions (e.g., Swift Counterattack). Rules Q&A
- Q: Flood the Earth: how does this count for meeting the requirements for putting the rings of water and void into play?
A: Ring of Water is looking for, "Battle action(s) from cards with different titles". The created terrain has no title, so is not different (extending from rules for keywords; http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#D ... e_keywords) and will not count for the Ring's tally.
Ring of the Void is looking for, "non-Kiho action(s) from Strategies". The created terrain is a Strategy (Flood the Earth card text), so counts for the Ring. Zen Faulkes, "Flood the Earth + Ring requirements", 31 Jan 2011 - Q: I have a few questions regarding Flood the Earth and its interactions with Ring of Water and Ring of the Void.
1a) Does Flood the Earth's created Terrain technically have a title? 1b) If not: if two Flood the Earths are activated in a single battle, do the individual Terrains count as 'cards with different titles'?
2) Does playing Flood the Earth's created Terrain count as a Strategy for the purposes of Ring of the Void?
Relevant cards: Flood the Earth Thunder Will only attach to a Thunder Shugenja. Battle: Destroy this card and bow this Shugenja: Create a Terrain Strategy with the ability, "Battle: Non-Naval Personalities at this battlefield bow after the resolution of each action they perform," and take an additional Battle action to play it (if legal).
Ring of Water Water • Unique After you resolve your fourth or later Battle action from cards with different titles in one battle: You may put this card into play from your hand. Battle: Bow this card or discard it from your hand: Move one of your target units home or to a battlefield with one or more enemy units. If the unit moved, straighten it.
Ring of the Void Void • Unique After you resolve your fourth or later non-Kiho action from Strategies in one phase: You may put his card into play from your hand. Open: Bow this card or discard it from your hand: If any player has more cards in his hand than you do, or if you bowed this card, draw a card.
A: 1a) Does Flood the Earth's created Terrain technically have a title? No. See Card Features, Created Cards: A created card has no title.
1b) If not: if two Flood the Earths are activated in a single battle, do the individual Terrains count as 'cards with different titles'? No - but they don't count towards the Ring of Water anyway, since they don't have a different title to other cards, by extension from the rules for Different and same keywords.
2) Does playing Flood the Earth's created Terrain count as a Strategy for the purposes of Ring of the Void? Yes, because Ring of the Void doesn't care about card titles. Alex Jones, "Flood the Earth, Ring of the Void, and Ring of Water", 24 Oct 2010 - Q: (W)ill the effects of the terrain still happen?
A: No.
At no point did I say anything like "and the terrain works normally." I thought I had a little more explicit wording about that in there, particularly in the second post. Sorry. Zen Faulkes, "Flood the Earth and Swift Counterattack", 3 Oct 2010 - Q: Flood the earth explicitly states that you take an additional action to play that terrain. Swift Counterattack responds to that additional action(...)
A: Which is the action, "Battle: Non-Naval Personalities..." Zen Faulkes, "Flood the Earth and Swift Counterattack", 3 Oct 2010 - Q: whose effects do not happen(.)
A: And its effects are bowing on non-Naval Personalities. The terrain entering play is not an effect of the action (which is all that Swift Counterattack stops), but a rulebook effect (which Swift Counterattack cannot stop). Zen Faulkes, "Flood the Earth and Swift Counterattack", 3 Oct 2010 - Q: If I play the battle action on flood the earth, can another player react to it with swift counterattack?
A: Yes, though the terrain will still enter play, because that is a rulebook effect, not an effect of the Terrain. Zen Faulkes, "Flood the Earth and Swift Counterattack", 2 Oct 2010 - Q: If i'm not allowed to ask about E@W yet then apologies.
A: No, sorry. We'll put up a sticky reminding people. Expect questions to be A-OK go around 20 September.
