Rules Q&A
- Q: Just to confirm officially: if I am playing Otomo Sensei and have a Fortified Camp in play, there's no way I can use the Camp's reactions to save one of my destroyed attachments right? It will get RFG "instantaneously" when destroyed.
A: That is correct. Jon Palmer, "Fortified Camp and Otomo Sensei", 10 Sep 2013 - Q: When a the Taoist Archer re-attaches from effects like Fortified Camp or Yoritomo Harada, are you able to draw the card again?
A: Not if it's the same turn, since that would contradict the rule on ability use being once a turn. Answer for the following question is the same. Zen Faulkes, "Follower Status and Fortified Camp", 18 Mar 2009 - Q: Hey all, If my opponent destroys a spell at a battlefied and I have a unused Fortified Camp and a straightened Isawa Chinatsu who has not used her ability that turn, will her reaction pay to reattach the spell?
A. Yes
A: The answer is:
A. Yes, you could choose to use her Reaction to pay for the Spell.
The answer is not: Brook Cunningham, "Fortified Camp + Isawa Chinatsu", 20 Feb 2009 - Q: B. No, because the cost is actually being generated by the Fortified Camp's Reaction, much the way you cannot use the benefit of a Supply Outpost trait benefit when paying for a personality without gaining honor to attach a Warden for 2 honor.
A: ...because the issue with Supply Outpost's trait versus Wardens' Reaction is that both effects attach the card; you have to choose to do one or the other. Then, after it's attached, you can't have another effect try to attach it again because it's no longer in your hand (as each effect requires).
Conversely, Fortified Camp's effect attaches, and Chinatsu produces Gold. These effects don't conflict or invalidate one another; they actually go quite well together. Brook Cunningham, "Fortified Camp + Isawa Chinatsu", 20 Feb 2009 - Q: Hi there,
When judging I was asked about the following situation.
Player A attacks with a random personality A, which had an Attachment (lets say a weapon costing 2 Gold). Player B has an unbowed Fortified Camp in play and defends with Pokku xp -> a battle ensures, Player B takes the first action and uses Pokku's printed Battleaction to transfer the Weapon to Pokku xp. Player A then destroys Pokku.
Can Player B use the reaction of Fortified Camp (assuming he has a legal target to attach the weapon to) ?
What was confusing for me was the fact, that Player B controls the weapon (A is just the owner now) and it clearly is an effect of your opponent, so you (normally) should be able to use Fortified Camps's reaction. But ...right in the moment, when the Weapon is destroyed, it's not actually attached to Pokku anymore ("after...destroys...it's personality") and thus not anymore "Player B's attachment", because the weapon is not attached anymore, so Fortified camp has no valid trigger anymore.
So I'm kinda unsure about the exact timing of a personality's attachments being destroyed due to the personality being destroyed (and if you can take a reaction like Fortified camp inbetween)
Thanks for your time,
---------------------
Just to be sure:
Same example as above, just that Player A "only" destroys _just the Weapon_ with an action:
In that case B can't take the reaction printed on fortified camp, can he ? (reasoning is above - weapon not attached to Pokku xp. anymore, so it's not player B's weapon and thus there is no valid trigger for the reaction)
A: Because the Reaction on Fortified Camp is after the item is destroyed, the item's owner is the one who gets to use it if the item alone is destroyed (see Your, http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_X-Z). It won't matter if the Personality is controlled by another player, because "its Personality" refers back to "your attachment." Zen Faulkes, "Pokku exp. and Fortified camp", 29 Nov 2008 - Q: Something came up in a tournament and wanted to make it clear for me
I have a Taoist Archer attached to a personality, the opposing player destrys it with a Shinjos Courage, I react with Fortified Camp and reattach the follower.
a) If the Taoist Archer has already used his Ranged ability, can he use it again since it left play and reentered?
b) Does the force penalty from Shinjos Courage still affect the follower or it clears because he was destroyed and reentered play?
Thanks a lot
A: Being out of play is not enough for a card to lose "memory".
http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Tracking_rule: "'Memory' of the status of individual cards ends when the card... becomes both face-down and out of play(.)" Emphasis added. Zen Faulkes, "Follower Status and Fortified Camp", 6 Oct 2008 - Q: If a Brothers in arms (non experienced) gets destroyed, and comes back, can he use that ability again? Since he had lost the ability when he hit the graveyard?
A: Yes, for reason stated. The trait of the Experienced Brothers in Arms affects only cards in play (http://rules.l5r.com/Physically_marked_ ... ut_of_play). Zen Faulkes, "Brothers In Arms + Fortified Camp", 24 Sep 2008 - Q: If my oponent destroys my Brother In Arms Experienced and then I use Fortified Camp to attach it back again to one of my personalities do I get to use the battle action (on) the normal Brothers In Arms one more time even if already used before?
A: Yes, for reasons stated in the post you linked to. Zen Faulkes, "Brothers In Arms + Fortified Camp", 23 Sep 2008 - Q: (W)hen a bowed follower is destroyed and I react with Fortified Camp, does it ataches bowed as he was when destroyed or unbowed since he's coming into play again?
A: Unbowed. The card fully hit the discard, where it lost its bowed/unbowed status. Zen Faulkes, "Brothers In Arms + Fortified Camp", 23 Sep 2008 - Q: Alright so I thought of this randomly while tuning my BRT Military deck.
When someone kills one of my created yojimbo followers am I able to react with Fortified camp and attach them back to anyone for free since they have 0 gold cost? And I guess this would also apply to Benika, Orito, Dayu and so on.
A: No, sorry. Fortified Camp reacts "after" the destruction. After destruction, there is no Yojimbo in the game anymore to (re)attach (emphasis mine below):
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_D#Destroy "When a card in play is destroyed, it leaves play, and enters its appropriate discard pile, or leaves the game if it was a created card."
Because:
http://rules.l5r.com/Timing: "Timing "when" a trigger occurs comes later than "before" but prior to "after" the trigger."
and
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_C#Created_cards: "Created cards cannot exist out of play." Brook Cunningham, "Fortified Camp", 16 Jun 2008 - Q: Sparrow Clan Aide
Text - Gain 1 Honor. Political Battle: Target a Personality with lower Personal Honor than this Personality: Bow or straighten the target.
Fortified Camp
Text Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold, or produce 3 Gold if paying for an attachment. Reaction: After another player’s action destroys one of your attachment cards or it’s Personality: Attach the card to one of your target Personalities (paying all costs).
My question is this;
If my opponent destroys my Sparrow Clan Aide and I trigger Fortified Camp, it completely leaves play and re-enters right? So do I gain the 1 honor again?
A: Fortified Camp brings a card into play after it has already left play. Martin Lund, "Fortified Camp + Sparrow Clan Aide", 15 Feb 2008 - Q: Reaction: After another player’s action destroys one of your attachment cards or it’s Personality: Attach the card to one of your target Personalities (paying all costs).
Reaction: After another player resolves a Battle Action, if this unit is at the current battlefield: Take an additional Battle action.
A: So Fortified Camp gets used in the middle of the offending Action's "Resolve Effects" step. It brings back the Gate Guardsman.
Gate Guardsman gets used after the offending Action's "Resolve Effects" step is over. It is returned to play in time to use its Reaction to the very Action that first killed it. Martin Lund, "Gate Guardsman & Fortified Camp", 2 Nov 2007 - Q: At the end of page 32 of the rulebook it reads like this "Equip - Limited: Any number of times per turn, target one of your personalities. Attach a target attachment card from your hand to him. (paying all costs)"
Assuming that Eastern Hub Port changes that to a battle/open action let's assume that I attack province 1 with my Yoritomo Randon and province 2 with my Tsuruchi Random. If I'm resolving at province 1 can I target and attach a card on my personality who is on province 2? I guess not because it doesn't have relevance. But I had to ask...
What if during a battle my Moshi Random with one follower is destroyed, can I use Fortified Camp reaction to bring the follower back to play attached to a personality who is not at the current battlefield?
Eastern Hub Port
Equipping is a Battle/Open action for you. After the first Battle action resolves each turn that attached a card to one of your Personalities: You may take an additional Battle action.
Fortified Camp
Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold, or produce 3 Gold if paying for an attachment. Reaction: After another player’s action destroys one of your attachment cards or it’s Personality: Attach the card to one of your target Personalities (paying all costs).
Thanks in advance!
A: Battle actions are restricted by the rules of Location and Presence. Reactions are not.
So, no, and yes. Chris Fuchs, "Eastern Hub Port and Fortified Camp", 10 Oct 2007 - Q: I control a Personality with Cowardly Rabble attached and during a battle my opponent takes one battle action and then the second one that end up destroying my follower. If I use Fortified Camp to bring him back into play what will happen?
A: This is a really vague question.
At first, I thought this question was, "Do cards 'remember' things when they've been out of play?" Yes, unless they were also face-down. See http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Tracking_rule
Then, I thought the question was "When does the clock start counting Battle actions?" The count starswhen the Combat Segment starts, because it's "the second or later time each battle," not "the second or later time each battle after this Follower enters play."
Then, I thought the question was, "Does the trait trigger all the time, or only when Battle actions resolve?" The latter. Zen Faulkes, "Cowardly Rabble", 22 Sep 2007 - Q: A Noble End text says to target a number of personalities or followers up to the personality personal honor. Does that "or" mean that the player who uses Noble End must target personalities OR followers ot he can chose both?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Special_wording_rules#Conjunctions: "Effects that check for a condition phrased as 'X or Y' are also satisfied if both X and Y are met."
A mix works. Zen Faulkes, "A Noble End and Fortified Camp doubts", 5 Sep 2007 - Q: Can the gold producing traits on Fortified Camp and Castle Barracks pay for Hida Dayu's ability? Will the Reaction on Fortified Camp 'save' a Follower created by Hida Dayu's ability?
Hida Dayu Limited: Pay 3 Gold: Create a 2F Follower card and attach it to one of your target Crab Clan Hero Personalities.
Fortified Camp Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold, or produce 3 Gold if paying for an attachment. Reaction: After another player’s action destroys one of your attachment cards or it’s Personality: Attach the card to one of your target Personalities (paying all costs).
Castle Barracks Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold, or 3 Gold when paying for a Follower.
Thanks for your continued help and patience!
A: No and no. Paying for an action that creates a follower is not the same as paying for an attachment.
Created cards only exist in play, and are removed from the game if they ever leave play. ( http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Created_cards ) Chris Fuchs, "Hida Dayu and Fortied Camp/Castle Barracks", 25 Aug 2007 - Q: I have a personality with a created attachement card (for exemple a benika's inhuman follower). During a battle, my opponent destroy this attachement (a ranged attack for exemple) but i have an unbowed Fortified camp. Can i annonce the reaction of Fortified Camp to reattach the card or is it remove from game before i had any opportunity to do so?
A: The latter. The Reaction is "after" destruction (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Fortified Camp + created cards", 9 Aug 2007
