Rules Q&A
- Q: As we all know, a bowed card cannot perform any actions. But how about bowed personalities with attached unbowed cards performing the actions on those cards? Specifics
Can a bowed personality fire a Fox Nagamaki?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 September 2002", 25 Sep 2002 - Q: Does Ambush Strategist affect Fox Nagamaki to make it a +4 Force bonus that remains in effect even after it is bowed to produce its Ranged 3 attack?
A: See Archive: "Gives a Force bonus to items capable of ranged attacks (e.g., Jade Bow). [VRD, 27 October 2000]" Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 7 July 2002", 8 Jul 2002 - Q: I don't understand this Rule: 'You cannot combine a ranged attack on an Item with one on the Personality carrying it if the Personality has to bow to make the ranged attack.' This is applied only to items like Jade Bow (the Personality has to bow to make the ranged attack OF THE ITEM) or it affects all items (like Fox Nagamaki + Tsuruchi)?
A: Only to items like the Jade Bow. Jeff Alexander, "post for 31 May 2002", 1 Jun 2002 - Q: Greetings! Does Xushen's ability affect items attached to him like Fox Nagamaki and Daikyu?
"If Xushen assigns during Infantry Maneuvers, he gains +1F and +1 strength to any ranged attacks he performs until the end of the attack phase."
A: Since he uses the term "perform", it would indeed apply to any ranged attacks on his Items, by the latest rulebook. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 April 2002", 18 Apr 2002 - Q: On a slightly different tangent, I also think this classification of actions ties in with the Ranged Attack / Item issue. Bows don't generally shoot themselves. The need to be USED by their wielder. Hence, Matsu Domotai (subject) makes an attack by means of Fox Nagamaki (means) against Ikoma sume (direct object). All 3 cards here are targeted.
A: Incorrect. "Deciding which among several different actions to use or play is not a targeting decision." [DA rulebook p. 46] You aren't targeting a Follower, Item, Personality, etc. just by deciding to use an action on it instead of an action on one of your other cards. The only thing targeted in this example is Ikoma Sume. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 April 2002 pt. 1", 5 Apr 2002 - Q: If a shugenja has Fire from Within attached and the Fox Nagamaki attached, can he bow to cast the spell and bow the nagamaki to make a combined range attack?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 February 2002", 21 Feb 2002
