Rules Q&A
- Q: My question is: does the stronghold's "3 additional Gold" count as a gold production bonus, making the stronghold effectively produce 2 gold when paying for a Shadowlands card? (zero, minus one, plus three, *then* apply minimum zero)
A: Yes, this is the correct interpretation. Brook Cunningham, "Imperial Palace of Fu Leng gold modification", 3 Sep 2014 - Q: Playing Nio Sensei with Imperial Palace of Fu Leng, is my starting honor 15 or 14?
I know in the old days it was "ruled" impossible for even a Sensei to affect SL Horde strongholds starting honor (and so not cause them to lose the game immediately), but in the present Legacy rules what I find is:
"Sensei modifiers will not reduce your Starting Family Honor below -19. If a card effect causes you to change Sensei during the game, the new Sensei's Starting Family Honor modifier does not affect your current Family Honor, but any changes to the Province Strength modifier do affect the strength of your provinces. "
So the restriction on SFH modifying by the Sensei would only apply to "-19" SL strongholds?
Thanks,
Jose
A: As you describe, the game rules allow a player with -19 Starting Family Honour to play Nio Sensei without losing immediately. The rule you quote obviously does not apply if you start on 15 honour, so an Imperial Palace of Fu Leng player with Nio Sensei will begin the game on 14 honour. Alex Jones, "Imperial Palace of Fu Leng with Nio Sensei", 28 Feb 2013 - Q: Hi,
New wording on some personalities, does it still refer to restriction of bringing them into play? Can Hantei Genji use it ability if Yodin Sensei is in play, I control more personalities than any other other player and I have already put into play a personality ?
If I am not a Shadowland player and Fu Leng is my province. Can Hantei Genji put him into play? Fu Leng reads : Will not be controlled by a non-Shadowlands Horde player. Is that a restriction to bring him to play? Fu Leng reads : Will not enter play unless two or more Personalities have been destroyed or given the Shadowlands keyword this turn. Is that a restriction to bring him to play?
Is the Loyal trait a restriction of bringing a personality into play?
=> It seems to be YES. Isn't it the "Fu Leng's first trait" the translation for Faction without Faction keyword?
Card texts: Fu Leng: Will not be controlled by a non-Shadowlands Horde player. Will not enter play unless two or more Personalities have been destroyed or given the Shadowlands keyword this turn.
Hantei Genji: Political Limited: Any number of times per turn, bow Genji and target a face-up Personality in a province: He enters play controlled by the province's player, ignoring costs and restrictions.
Yodin Sensei: The player (or players) with the most Personalities in play cannot bring a Personality into play if he or she has brought a Personality into play this turn.
Thanks in advance, Regards, Rémi.
A: Yes is the answer to all the questions.
See Restriction, definition. Brook Cunningham, "Bringing into play a personality : restriction", 10 Mar 2012 - Q: So I saw this ruling.
And was curious why the Good Faith Rule doesn't apply in this case, but does apply in situations like...
Ikoma Ayumu + Control the Board.
What is different about these two situations with regard to the Good Faith Rule that allows one but not the other?
A: Good Faith doesn't apply to this situation. The sequence of play simply doesn't allow it.
The Personality in question will only gain Shadowlands AFTER the restriction of the Stronghold is checked.
In Ayumu's case, he's straightening before the performance restriction is checked. Brook Cunningham, "Legacy: Imperial Palace of Fu Leng", 28 Dec 2011 - Q: Imperial Palace of Fu Leng reads: Your Stronghold produces 3 more Gold when paying for a Shadowlands card. You cannot gain or lose Honor. Your Personalities will not swear fealty. Your cards cannot perform or be targeted by Political actions. You may not bring non-Shadowlands Personalities into play.
(emphasis mine) Apparently many people waive the bolded trait by using Tuf-Tuf Sake House or Corrupt Jade Vein. However, both these holdings give the Shadowlands keyword during (or more accurately, after) payment. According to the rules wiki, restrictions on Personalities entering play are checked before payment (step B for entering play restrictions, step C for payment).
According to this, would it be legal for a player using Imperial Palace of Fu Leng to bring into play a Personality without the base Shadowlands keyword using Tuf-Tuf Sake House or Corrupt Jade Vein? My guess is "no", but the only result of my forum search was an unanswered question and I'd like to have it official. Thank you in advance.
Other relevant card texts: Tuf-tuf Sake House Lose 3 Honor. Bow this card: Produce 3 Gold. Lose 1 Honor. Bow this card: Produce 4 Gold when paying for a non-Shadowlands Human. Dishonor him and permanently give him the Shadowlands trait. Lose 1 Honor. Open: Target a Shadowlands Human. He and all his Followers gain the Cavalry trait.
Corrupt Jade Vein Lose 2 Honor. Bow this card: Produce Gold equal to 2 plus the number of Shadowlands Personalities you control without the printed Shadowlands trait. If this pays for a Personality, permanently give him the Shadowlands trait.
A: You may not use Tuf-tuf Sake House or Corrupt Jade Vein to bring a non-Shadowlands Personality into play for The Imperial Palace of Fu Leng, for the reason stated: the Personality would only gain Shadowlands after the restriction had been checked. Alex Jones, "Legacy: Imperial Palace of Fu Leng", 16 Dec 2011 - Q: If I bring Fu Leng into play with The Jagged Maw "Open: Bow this Stronghold, which may remain bowed: Target a dead Personality in your discard pile. Bring him into play, ignoring costs. The next time this game your Stronghold is unbowed, remove him from the game."
Do I have to meet Fu Lengs requirement of two destroyed personalities/two personalities gaining the shadowlands trait in order to bring him in?
A: Yes. There is no constraint which says the restriction only applies during the Dynasty Phase. Alex Jones, "Fu Leng + The Jagged Maw", 8 May 2008 - Q: I'm having some trouble understand this guy's Limited. "Once per turn per target" Does that mean I can do it any number of times so long as enough different targets exist for me to do so?
A: You can use the ability once on each qualified Personality in a single turn.
So if you have 10 valid targets, you can use it up to 10 times - but only once per each target. You can't use it 0 times on one Personality and twice on someone else. Martin Lund, "Fu Leng?", 29 Apr 2008 - Q: If personality A gained the shadowlands trait and personality B was destroyed during the same turn, and no other personalities have had either situation happen to them, will Fu Leng be able to enter play during the same turn?
A: No.

Two destructions, or two taintings. Not one of each. Zen Faulkes, "Fu Leng entering play restriction query", 28 Feb 2008 - Q: Regarding this ruling:
viewtopic.php?t=57575
When do the "owned" cards become Spider Clan personalities? After they're in play, or any time they are in the deck? I thought that an owned card was any card in the deck after the game began. If that were the case, I would have thought that the Mask would have made Oni no Akuma a Spider Clan personality before entering play.
Just asking for a little more explanation.
A: "May not be negated" means it cannot be overridden. Zen Faulkes, "Mask of Fu Leng, Spider Clan, Oni no Akuma part II", 27 May 2007 - Q: [OBH] Fu Leng: do personalities who become dead from provinces or discard count for his enter play requirement?
A: No. The definition of "destroy" is specifically to leave play via destruction. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 15 May 2026
