Rules Q&A
- Q: I have Fu Leng's Guidance in play and attack into a Crab player. He defends with an army that includes Hida Ikarukani. I destroy Hida Ikarukani with some action. Do I get to react with the Guidance before he can use Ikarukani's trait? If so, does Ikarukani's trait kick in, and must my opponent destroy a personality?
Hida Ikarukani After the resolution of an action that destroyed Ikarukani while he was at a battlefield: The enemy leader chooses and destroys one of his unbowed Personalities at the current battlefield.
Fu Leng's Guidance Reaction: After the resolution of an action that destroyed another player's Personality during a battle, if you are a Spider Clan player, discard this card: Bring him into play, ignoring Gold cost and Honor Requirement, in your current army. Permanently give him Shadowlands and Undead.
Thanks,
A: Hida Ikarukani has a trait.
Fu Leng's Guidance has a Reaction.
Traits always go before Reactions (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Timing#Resolvin ... _conflicts). Zen Faulkes, "Hida Ikarukani and Fu Leng's Guidance", 26 Jun 2011 - Q: regarding viewtopic.php?f=59&t=90677
Can you actually react with Fu Leng's Guidance? You control the personality at the moment.
A: Good point, you cannot react with Fu Leng's Guidance because the Personality was not "another player's Personality" at the time he was destroyed.
I was focusing on the "permanent control" aspect of the question, which would still apply if you returned the Personality to play with, say, Feign Death. Alex Jones, "Bestial Rage and Fu Leng's Guidance", 14 May 2011 - Q: So, I did a search and did not find my answer and I read the judge rule book hoping to find an answer but had my question still.
In my event phase as I am flipping my cards, I reveal Fu Leng's Guidance. It is a kami but I am told this is a Celestial. Where on the field do I put them. Does it attach to my providence like a region or does it have it's own place to sit, like a Ring or Kata?
A: Celestial cards enter play, in their own area. Dan Jacobson, "Celestials, where do they go?", 19 Jun 2010 - Q: I searched for this under both cards since one should answer the other.
Both have a react to death cause by and action that killed. I'm assuming that neither Udo nor Fu Leng's Guidance can be used in response to a character dying at battle resolution, but, I was playing with someone using both cards like this.
I didn't think that was right, but, since it was just a casual game and I rarely get a chance to play, I didn't want to make a big deal of it.
I'm still curious though.
Thank you
A: Both reactions state "after the resolution of an action...."
Battle resolution is not a Battle/Open/Limited/Reaction, and so does not fall under this.
You cannot use either the action on Fu Leng's Guidance or the action on Udo from battle resolution. Dan Jacobson, "Udo and Fu Leng's Guidance", 8 Feb 2010 - Q: Hi all,
Player A control's Fu Leng's Guidance and multiple units. Player B controls multiple units. Here's the question:
Player B previously uses the printed battle action on a Personality. That Personality is destroyed by Player A by an action, and Player reacts with Fu Leng's Guidance to bring that Personality into play. Can Player A use that revived Personality's printed battle action? Or is it the case that the game's memory of that action being used is not reset?
Thanks.
Togashi Azrael
A: For card memory to be reset, two things have to happen:
1) The card must be out of play, AND 2) The card must be face down.
Personalities in discard piles are face up, so card memory is not lost. Dan Jacobson, "Fu Leng's Guidance vs. used effects", 13 Dec 2009 - Q: If I use Fu Leng's Guidance to take control of a personality with an entering play honor-loss or gain, do I lose/gain the honor?
A: Yes. The card is entering play. Entering play effects (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_E#Ente ... Honor_loss) are not limited to entering play from a Province. Zen Faulkes, "Fu Leng's Guidance and Entering Play Traits", 11 Dec 2009 - Q: When a personality is destroyed, does the game keep track of whose personality it was, or does it just keep track that someone was destroyed?
A: The former.
(Aside: Most cards refer to ownership when something is out of play rather than control -- see http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Physically_mark ... rd_control and http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Physically_mark ... _ownership -- but that turns out not to matter in this particular case ). Zen Faulkes, "Fu Leng's Guidance + Fu Leng's Guidance.", 6 Dec 2009 - Q: Player A resolves an action that destroys Player B's personality. Player A uses Fu Leng's Guidance to bring that personality into play, etc. Can Player B use her Fu Leng's Guidance on the same personality at this point?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/Timing#Triggers.2C ... ering_play: "When a trigger is keyed to after a card enters or leaves play, and there is also a condition on the trigger, the condition refers back to the state of the card at the point just before the card left or entered play."
The Reaction on Fu Leng's Guidance is not legal for player B until the Personality dies again. Zen Faulkes, "Fu Leng's Guidance + Fu Leng's Guidance.", 6 Dec 2009 - Q: Also, since "Bring him into play" fails, the personality will not become controlled by Player B, correct?
A: Moot question, due to above. Zen Faulkes, "Fu Leng's Guidance + Fu Leng's Guidance.", 6 Dec 2009 - Q: My question is considering whether or not a clan can discard a "out of clan" Guidance. Say I am a Crab player, I flip my province to have a Fu Leng's Guidance come into play.
Fu Leng's Guidance Kami • Unique Shadowlands cards have +1F while opposed. Reaction: After the resolution of an action that destroyed another player's Personality during a battle, if you are a Spider Clan player, discard this card: Bring him into play, ignoring Gold cost and Honor Requirement, in your current army. Permanently give him Shadowlands and Undead.
Now say that the other players personality is destroyed; is the being a spider clan player needed in order to discard the card, or would I be able to discard the card since the trigger has occurred, but since I am not a Spider player causes the action to fail.
A: If you are not a Spider Clan player, you may not play the Reaction on Fu Leng's Guidance, it is a restriction to playing the action.
If you have a bunch of Shadowlands cards, enjoy that +1F while Opposed! Dan Jacobson, "Fu Leng's Guidance Trigger", 3 Dec 2009 - Q: Player A has Hida's Guidance in play and attacks player B, who's got two provinces and Fu Leng's Guidance in play. Player A uses his Hida's Guidance and destroys his army (and the province, with its battlefield). Can Player B react with Fu Leng's Guidance to that action and (successfully) bring into play one of the personalities destroyed to pay Hida's Guidance's cost?
A: This question boils down to: Can you "Bring him into play... in your current army" when there is no current army?
First, this is one effect, not two. It's not "enter play and join the army" or any such thing. Thus, the "all effects are independent" rule does not apply.
Second, I cannot find any rule that says if a card cannot enter play in a specified location, it defaults to some location. (This is a rare enough situation that it might be in there somewhere, but I can't find it.)
Based on those, the effect fails because there is no current army for the Personality to enter play in. Zen Faulkes, "Hida's Guidance Vs Fu Leng's Guidance", 9 Sep 2009
