Rules Q&A
- Q: Hi,
Can I discard a Fudo Ring for it's effect?
This question came up in a game I was playing yesterday.
My argument was that on page 9 in the Advanced Rulebook in the text about Ring cards: ..."They can be discarded from the hand to use their ability" ...
His argument was This ruling: Fudo Rings and This ruling: Fudo rings where it says you can't pay the cost of bowing the ring for it's action.
After the game I went on looking and found that both on the cards and in the Oracle of the Void all the rings, Fudo and the standard ring, have a bow cost. I fail to see the difference between them that would allow standard rings to be used from the hand and not the Fudo rings and they are both Ring type cards and I have been unable to find anything in the Ivory Rulebook that differenates between them.
If the Fudo rings can not be used from the hand can the standard rings be used from the hand as they all have a bowing cost too?
A: All of the standard rings also have trait saying "You may discard this Ring from your hand to use its ability without cost". The Fudo rings lack this trait, and so their bow cost needs paid in order for their abilities to be used. Jon Palmer, "Discarding a Ring for it's effect", 19 Aug 2014 - Q: The False Path Your non-Unique Monk and Fudo Personalities in and out of play have Monk • Fudo. Fudo Personalities join you for 2 less Gold. You ignore Honor Requirements of your Fudo cards. You do not lose Honor from Fudo cards you own. You may not win by Enlightenment.
If I am playing the False Path and have Hiyamako (2G Spider Monk) in province what do I pay when I go to recruit him?
1) 0G - Fudo is a psuedo-clan so he has my alignment in addition to Spider so he is 2G (base) - 2G (Fudo) = 0. 2) 2G - He is aligned with a Clan that is not my own (because I do not have one), so he is 2G (base) + 2 (out of clan) - 2 (Fudo) = 2.
Thanks!
A: Your example #2 is correct. Ben Higgins, "The False Path and Ivory Personality Costing", 21 Mar 2014 - Q: from here
Nothing in the new bowing mechanics say that only cards in play can be bowed. So that means I can bow a fudo ring that is in my hand by turning it sideways compared to the rest of my hand and then show it to use it effects. My only question is do I discard it afterwards or does it return to my hand going face down and out of play so that I can re-use it?
Edit: Yes I know this is a ridiculous question.
A: Cards out of play cannot be bowed.
This will be addressed in the CR document to come, and I will recommend it be added to the Rules Reference document.
And before anyone asks about Togashi Korimi, I'll direct you to the top of page 9 of the Rules Reference, and the Exception for taking Interrupts on a card out of play. Ben Higgins, "Fudo rings", 14 Mar 2014 - Q: Following : viewtopic.php?f=59&t=106379
Nicolas Bongiu-sama during Questions and Answers on EC2013 said "There is not Unaligned stonghold in the base set in Ivory. As you know, due to GenCon results Foothold of the Mad is gonna be legal, though, so for the fans of Unaligned that will be an option." ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... S6fs#t=447, 7:27 )
Gencon2013 was a Fudo victory, though. Bongiu-sama perhaps misspoke the name of the stronghold, but it was clear that either Foothold of the Mad (as spoken) or The False Path (as intended, IMO) was meant to be legal in Ivory (and not Ivory Extended).
If The False Path is illegal in Ivory, then perhaps Foothold of the Mad is? If neither - please explain what "legality" was speakin Bongiu-sama of? Thank you in advance.
A: Currently, neither The False Path nor Foothold of the Mad is a legal Stronghold for Ivory Edition; neither card has an Ivory Edition legality bug.
When or if either of the cards receives an errata or MRP to make the Stronghold legal, be sure we will announce it. Ben Higgins, "The False Path in Ivory Edition (follow up)", 10 Jan 2014 - Q: Fudo XP Fudo may not assign, and will not move, to battlefields unless it has 5 Charging tokens. After Fudo is assigned: Remove two of its Charging tokens.
Just would like a confirmation, with the way the traits is worded, he will only be able to move/assign if he has at no more and no less 5 charging tokens?
If he has 1-4 or 6 and above charging tokens, he can't assign/move?
Thanks.
A: Fudo exp may assign with more than 5 Charging tokens.
See Special wording rules, Numbers of things: When something checks for the presence of a number of things that is two or more, the check is met by more than that number of those things. Example: If you have four Shugenja in play you meet the condition “If you have two Shugenja in play.” If the presence of an exact number of things is being checked for, this will be noted by language such as "exactly two" or "only one," or by mentioning two or more specific numbers such as “zero or one.” Alex Jones, "Fudo Experienced & Charging tokens", 2 Jan 2013
