Rules Q&A
- Q: Let's say I manage to copy Bayushi Jin'E's ability (with Fukuzo).
Ninja Open, w: Give a target Personality and Jin-e each a -1F/-1C Poison token.
Now, if Fukuzo has a Gift Armor attached, does it mean he will only get -1F?
I think yes, and nothing I found on this forum made me think I was wrong...
Did I miss something?
A: The Gift Armor doesn't change the fact that you're receiving a -1F/-1C token.
It will negate the penalty from the token as long as its attached, but should you lose the Gift Armor while still having the token, the penalty will assert itself. Brook Cunningham, "Gift Armor and -1/-1", 21 Nov 2013 - Q: If I have Fukuzo - EXP in play and I attach a Wyrmbone Katana to him, and I RFG Kanpeki and copy his Kensai keyword, I can attach another Wyrmbone to him. Now, if I use Fukuzo's ability again to rfg a personality and NOT copy the kensai trait, does he still get to keep the two Wyrmbone Katana on him or does one just get discarded?
A: Checking legality of attachments, like Followers' Honor Requirements or the number of Weapons a Personality may attach, is done only at the time of attaching, not constantly. Nothing will happen to Fukuzo's second Weapon should he lose "Kensai" after legally attaching it. Brook Cunningham, "Fukuzo - EXP Questions", 9 Apr 2012 - Q: Regarding this: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=97173
How does this work with the definition of from and on not being the same anymore?
From Some things check to see if costs, effects, actions, targeting, or other game procedures come “from” a given source. The source is the card that the effect, action or targeting is printed on, or the rulebook if it is printed there. There are three exceptions: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_F
On An ability, a trait or a keyword on a card is one either printed on the card, or granted to it by some effect. Abilities granted to a player by cards or the rulebook are "on" the player, but come "from" their card or rulebook source. See From. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_O
If the ability has to be from the targeted personality does it not have to be printed on the card. Or is from in this case just used in it's common english meaning and not in it's rulebook defined meaning?
A: You omitted Exception #3 under the definition of "from", which fits this case exactly (emphasis mine):
"3. Costs and effects of traits and abilities given to other cards, copied from other cards, or on created cards, come from the card they are currently on." Brook Cunningham, "Fukuzo and temporary abilities", 4 Apr 2012 - Q: Let's say there is an strategy that gives your guy a ability until the end of the turn (totally unrelated to any cards previewed today on the main site ).
A: Why, surely you must be asking about Extensive Training? Ahem... Brook Cunningham, "Fukuzo and temporary abilities", 4 Apr 2012 - Q: What happens if Fukuzo -exp removes that guy with it's ability?
a) Can Fukuzo's ability copy it (it says 'from', so, not sure)?
If it does, what is the duration of that ability ON Fukuzo: b) Until Fukuzo uses it's own Open ability again. c) Until the end of the turn.
A: a) Yes, Fukuzo may copy a granted ability.
and if he... she... it does so, the duration of the copy is "b)". Brook Cunningham, "Fukuzo and temporary abilities", 4 Apr 2012 - Q: Thanks guys!
A: You're very welcome. Enjoy the combo. Brook Cunningham, "Fukuzo and temporary abilities", 4 Apr 2012 - Q: So I saw this, and had a follow up question, for clarification. Since Jinn-Kuen only negates effects, the targeted personality, is still removed from the game, since that is a cost, right?
A: That is correct. Ben Higgins, "Negation in the discard pile (Jinn-Kuen + Fukuzo)", 12 Mar 2012 - Q: If I have a merchant in the discard pile and my opponent targets it with Fukuzo xp's ability, can I react with Jinn-Kuen xp2's ability to negate it?
Yasuki Jinn-Kuen xp2: Political Reaction: After an action targets your Merchant, pay 2 Gold: Negate the action's effects.
Fukuzo xp: Open: Remove a target Personality in any player's discard pile from the game: Fukuzo wears his skin. Until the next time this game this ability is used, Fukuzo copies one keyword, and one ability that does not itself copy abilities, from the Personality.
Thank you for you time!
A: Yes, as long as Jinn-Kuen is in play.
Jinn-Kuen doesn't state that the Merchant must be in play when targeted for his ability to trigger. Ben Higgins, "Negation in the discard pile (Jinn-Kuen + Fukuzo)", 12 Mar 2012
