Rules Q&A
- Q: I get that outer walls, Chugo Seido, Imperial command etc can't be used and that's cool, but can you save them with Duty or Akodo Senichi?
A: No, Duty and Senichi react during the action's resolution, when the destruction from the Ranged Attack occurs.
In fact, as the poster below points out, you are currently INCORRECT under CE Rules in that you actually CAN react with Outer Walls, Chugo Seido, and Imperial Command. Those react to targeting, which occurs before the action's first effect (the one that prevents Reactions) is applied. Brook Cunningham, "Shosuro Aroru", 8 Aug 2011 - Q: I just had an question about these type of reactions:
Akodo Senichi Relevant Text: Reaction: Before another player's card's effect destroys one of your Lion Clan Samurai Personalities in Senichi's army, destroy Senichi: Negate the Personality's destruction. Gain 3 Honor.
Hold! Relevant Text: Text Reaction: Before another player's action's resolution, target your unbowed Commander at the current battlefield: Choose one of your Personalities there. Choose whether to negate his bowing or his movement from that action.
Does senichi's reaction last until the end of action or the end of turn? Does hold last until the end of action or the end of turn?
A: Senichi's reaction creates an instantaneous negation, and which negates only the destruction it's triggered by. Hold!'s reaction isn't triggered by the effect it negates, so it creates an ongoing negation that lasts until the end of the turn.
See Effects, Duration and scope of prevention effects: A prevention effect from a Reaction or triggered trait that was both triggered by, and prevents, another individual effect is instantaneous, and it prevents only that effect. An effect from an action or triggered trait that prevents a type of occurrence (such as all destruction, destruction from a particular player's cards, or destruction from any of an action's effects) is ongoing and lasts until the end of the turn by default. Alex Jones, "Akodo Senichi and Hold!", 20 Apr 2011 - Q: This was used against me in a game and it seems to defeat the purpose of his ability. I do not disagree that it plays the way its worded, I just don't understand who decided to word it that way.
Situation, ranged 4 attack targeting Senichi. Senichi dies, reaction, Senichi dies to stop Senichi from dying. Cheating Lion player gains 3 honor for his guy stepping in front of himself. Is this really how its SUPPOSED to work?
A: Mod nudge: This is not the place to discuss design intent of a card. Please do so in the main CCG forum.
Akodo Senichi does work as you suggest, although Senichi dies to "prevent" Senichi from dying. Dan Jacobson, "Akodo Senichi Killing himself to save himself", 14 Apr 2010 - Q: Is his reaction a once per game, once per turn or once per battle?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_a ... esignators: "(A)bilities can be used only once per turn, unless a different usage limit is stated." (Emphasis added.) Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Senichi and Will", 3 Mar 2010 - Q: Can you please clarify why you wouldn't rehonor Akodo Senichi?
I'm confused as to why the "multiple jutsushi" effects would dishonor posthumously (given that the first effect was seppuku'd, but the second one wasn't), but gaining honor posthumously wouldn't rehonor.
Why does one effect work on out of play cards, but the other doesn't?
Is it because Bayushi Jutsushi's effect is a delayed effect and the re-honoring effect comes from a rulebook effect?
Thank you for the clarification.
A: Because Jutsushi's effect is activated when the targeted Personality is in play, while the rulebook effect that attempts to rehonour Senichi is activated when he is out of play.
See Effects in and out of play: When an effect is activated, it will only apply to cards that at the time of activation are either in play, or in a temporary focusing, entering-play, or resolution area.
Addendum: See also here. Alex Jones, "Deathseeker and dying dishonorably.", 19 Feb 2010 - Q: Akodo Senichi: If Senichi is dishonorable and uses his ability, he dies dishonorably, I lose 0 honor, and then gain 3 from his effect?
A: No. It's worse than that.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Physically_mark ... shonorable: "Before a player gains Honor from an action or trait that... came from... one or more of his or her dishonorable Personalities..." Senichi's ability comes from him, so this applies.
"...the Personality is rehonored and the player does not gain the Honor." They're separate and independent effects. It's not, "If the Personality is rehonored, then the player does not gain the Honor."
No 3 honor in this scenario. Zen Faulkes, "Deathseeker and dying dishonorably.", 18 Feb 2010
