Rules Q&A
- Q: Fury of the Dark Lord + Feign Death Is Feign Death "fast enough" to get played before the second effect of FotDL removes the discarded Personalities from the game?
A: Destroying all the victims and removing all the Personalities in the discard piles from the game are two separate and sequential effects. You can certainly respond to Personalities dying with Reactions like "Feign Death" before Fury of the Dark Lord manages to get around to cleaning out the discard piles. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 November 2004", 26 Nov 2004 - Q: Question: For Fury of the Dark Lord, it targets personalities gold cost, not necessarly printed gold cost, correct?
A: No.
First, it does not target their cost costs. It references them, but it does not target. You never have to choose and it doesn't say "target" so it does not target.
Second, the card text states that it refers to "a printed Gold cost." Martin Lund, "Rules for 4 October 2004", 6 Oct 2004 - Q: Somebody wanted me to ask this question. Does this card destroy all cards in provinces and in decks?
A: No. Destroy is typically reserved to refer to cards in play and Provinces. Under the current templating cards which are not in play are typically either Discarded or Removed From the Game, not "Destroyed." Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 September 2004", 15 Sep 2004 - Q: Very quick question: does Fury of the Dark Lord target each personality it effects?
Text:
Limited: Destroy each Personality with a base Gold Cost equal to or less than his controller’s Stronghold’s Gold Production plus 2. Remove all Personalities in discard piles from the game.
Thanks, Mark
A: No; if a card doesn't explicitly say "target", it does not target.
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_T#Target: "The word “target” must appear as a verb or an adjective for the procedure to be considered targeting..." Brook Cunningham, "Fury of the Dark Lord", 25 Mar 2009 - Q: So am I correct to assume that Pekkle's trait triggers after Fury of the Dark Lord is finished removing personalities in discard piles from the game?
A: No. Her trait triggers immediately after she is destroyed, which is before Fury's second effect removes cards from the game.
The conflict in your link was that Determination's removal and Pekkle's trait both have the SAME timing, after she is destroyed. At that point, the type of effect determined their order, placing Determination's delayed effect before Pekkle's triggered trait. However, in the case of Fury, the timing of the trigger happens after Fury's first effect, which is definitely before its second. Brook Cunningham, "Pekkle no Oni + Fury of the Dark Lord", 13 Mar 2009 - Q: Hi guys,
Just a short question about Fury of the Dark Lord. I already know that the destructions caused by it are separate effects that happen simultaneously. But I would like to know who decides in what order the destroyed cards hit the discard pile. It cannot happen simultaneously - some cards will physically lie on top of others
Thanks!
A: The discard piles: If multiple cards enter the discard pile at the same time, their owner determines the order they go in. Alex Jones, "Fury of the Dark Lord + discarding dead Personalities", 28 Feb 2009 - Q: Assume I am playing a deck that has (say) five boxable personalities on the table. I play One More Sacrifice on my turn, destroying a personality per the cost. I now have four boxable personalities in play. My turn ends. On his turn, my opponent plays Fury of the Dark Lord. My four boxable personalities are destroyed by the effect of Fury of the Dark Lord. Am I correct in saying that I would get to destroy four of my opponent's personalities of my choice, per the ongoing effect of One More Sacrifice?
A: That's correct. Brook Cunningham, "Fury of the Dark Lord and One More Sacrifice", 6 Jan 2009 - Q: I am assuming that the destruction of my boxable personalities is each a separate but simultaneous effect, and that the destruction of each of my opponent's personalities is, likewise a separate, simultaneous effect.
A: The first assumption is correct, the second is not.
Each of your opponent's Personalities' destruction is a separate, indefinite conditional effect from One More Sacrifice's ongoing effect, all with the same simultaneous trigger (your boxables' destructions). Per Resolving timing conflicts, Step D, "The active player decides the order in which more than one [indefinite conditional effect] apply[s]."" Brook Cunningham, "Fury of the Dark Lord and One More Sacrifice", 6 Jan 2009 - Q: Both me and my opponent control Personalities which will be destroyed by Fury of the Dark Lord. During my turn, I play Fury of the Dark Lord. As a reaction to my personality´s destruction, I play Assigning Blame on the opponent´s personality. He loses 3 Honor, his personality is dishonored, then destroyed (by Fury of the Dark Lord). Does this work? Or is his personality already out of play at the time I could play Assigning Blame?
A: The latter. Zen Faulkes, "Assigning Blame and Fury of the Dark Lord", 18 Apr 2008 - Q: Do all the destructions [from Fury of the Dark Lord] happen at the same time or consecutively? If they happen consecutively, wouldn't my opponent be able to choose that my samurai will die first, then the Shugenja, then the Courtier (or any other order for that matter) since it is his turn?
A: All destructions from Fury of the Dark Lord happen simultaneously.
http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Order_of_effects: "If multiple effects are caused by a single piece of text they occur simultaneously, unless otherwise specified by language such as “consecutively.” Examples: “Bow all Oni”; “Dishonor two Samurai”."
What you may be thinking of, in regards to your opponent choosing the order of effects, is when two or more different effects (like multiple delayed effects or triggered traits) try to happen at the same time. As in:
http://rules.l5r.com/Timing: "If the order of simultaneous triggers to an occurrence needs to be determined, the active player determines their order." Brook Cunningham, "Re: Fury of the Dark Lord", 21 Mar 2008 - Q: Will Fury of the Dark Lord destroy a Shinjo Turong xp. when controlled by a Mantis Clan player?
Thanks!
A: If you'll note the announcement, still not answering Stronger than Steel questions. Zen Faulkes, "Shinjo Turong + Fury of the Dark Lord", 4 Oct 2007 - Q: Will a Determination played on a Fury of the Dark Lord remove the personalities in the Hall of Ancestors' discard pile from the game?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_C#Cannot
Hall of Ancestors negates. Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Determination + Fury of the Dark Lord vs Hall of Ancestors", 15 Sep 2007 - Q: Can a player play Fury of the Dark Lord, target all of my face down ninja, and then not pay the 15 gold cost allowing the action to fail?
As I understand the order in which actions are performed this works. And would deprive me of the ability to use my stronghold force pump. As well as flip ninjas to keep them safe from the threat of his paying the gold cost.
Did I miss something?
A: If he announces the action, and the cost is not changed or interfered with, he MUST pay the 15 gold for it. Chris Fuchs, "Fury of the Dark Lord and Ninja and Cost", 16 Jun 2006 - Q: Fury of the Dark Lord, does it hit face-down Ninja's or no. Excellence- same question.
A: Fury of the Dark Lord refers to "printed" Gold cost. When face-down, Ninjutsu Personalities have no printed cost: there is no ink physically on the card specifying cost, so the stat will be treated as zero (Diamond rules, pg 63: "If something refers to a value that isnt specified or is missing... consider that value to be 0.")
Excellence does not refer to printed Gold cost, so it will treat face-down Ninjutsu personalities as costing 4G. Zen Faulkes, "Ninjutsu cost and cards based on cost.", 28 Aug 2005
