Rules Q&A
- Q: Player One has two units in play: A Fusami and a second Unit (Unit #2) Player Two Ambushes Unit #2. Player One attempts to use Fusami's Reaction. what happens ?
A: The challenge happens.
http://rules.l5r.com/FAQ#If_one_effect_ ... _happen.3F
Also, http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Order_of_effects: "All effects are separate, even if joined by the word 'and.'" Zen Faulkes, "Fusami and Ambush", 24 May 2009 - Q: I guess the real question is.. are there multiple triggers when assigning? Or do they just all happen at the same time[?]
A: Well, the answer to both of those is "yes".
But, as to whether Fusami's targeting can be changed via Seat of Power, the answer is "no".
"Wha...?" you may be asking. Okay:
Fusami's Reaction has only one legal target, because it is taken during one specific round of Reactions, related to that legal target's assignment or movement. The fact that several assignments or movements happen simultaneously does not change the fact that their respective rounds of Reactions are not merged but sequential.
http://rules.l5r.com/Timing#Resolving_timing_conflicts: "If the order of simultaneous triggers to an occurrence needs to be determined, the active player determines their order. Example: Two personalities destroyed simultaneously in battle resolution, A and B, each have a Reaction or trait that trigger before they are destroyed. The active player decides whether Reactions and traits triggered by A’s destruction happen before or after Reactions and traits triggered by B’s destruction."
(My thanks to fellow RT members "Bayushi" Loïc Hervier and Dan "Kaiu Genji" Jacobson for their assistence with the answer.) Brook Cunningham, "Multiple Triggers on Assignment + Fusami", 25 Jan 2009 - Q: He had a personality (I can't recall the name) that has a Reaction to bow an assigning or moving in personality, and I had Fusami - and used her reaction to move in and immediately challenge to a duel.
A: I'm sorry, but not knowing the text of the other card is really hampering my ability to tell you the correct interaction and sequence.
In general:
Effects happen in sequence. Reactions to those effects could cause other effects to happen "in between". If someone assigns to attack you, you can React with Fusami. If a hypothetical Reaction to her movement bows her (i.e. Reaction: After X moves: Bow X), then that occurs immediately after she moves, before the challenge. The word "and" doesn't denote simultaneous effects.
But then, her being bowed won't cause the challenge to fail. Once a sequence of effects is legally activated, making it illegal afterward (as in, abilities on bowed cards can't be used) won't stop it: "Once the action has begun to resolve, effects that influence its ability to have been played in the first place do not influence the activation of its own effects. Example: Required targeting becoming illegal, or the card leaving play." (Citation).
Minor note; challenges have a tiny exception to that rule: "If a Personality involved in a challenge or duel leaves play during it, the challenge or duel ends immediately without resolution." (Citation).
I hope these answers have helped. Brook Cunningham, "Conflicting Reactions", 19 Nov 2008 - Q: Ok, lets start this...
First, all involve Bayushi Tsimaru (experienced)
Scorpion Clan • Samurai • Experienced • Unique Other players can not target Tsimaru with Political actions. Reaction: Twice per turn, before a unit moves: Negate the movement.
Ok lets go...
A - Fusami uses her Battle, Tsimaru negates the movement, What happen? Does the challenge still goes on? The card dont say that if it moved...
Fusami
Reaction: After another player's target Personality assigns or moves to an army attacking you: Fusami moves to the target's location and challenges him. The challenge may be refused; if it is refused, bow the target and move him home. Destroy the loser.
B - Overhelming speed says:
Overwhelming Speed
Battle: Target one of your Cavalry units: Bow and move home a target enemy Infantry unit with less Force.
If Tsimaru negates its movement, does the personality still bows? Can Tsimaru even try to negate the movement, for that he must bow first then move, following the card text?
A: You want the FAQ, methinks.
http://rules.l5r.com/FAQ#Is_an_action_l ... _happen.3F Zen Faulkes, "Bayushi Tsimaru And movements...", 30 Nov 2007 - Q: 2) Suppose my opponent moves Fusami into a battle opposing me and I play Cut Them Off. Does Fusami get to issue her challenge?
A: You can't play Cut Them Off until Fusami's Reaction has finished Resolving. That means not only the movement portion of its effects, but also the Challenge. Cut Them Off says, "After an action resolves that moved ..." Someone's going to get dueled long before you can play Cut Them Off. Martin Lund, "Cut Them Off, additional action follow-ups...", 31 Jul 2007 - Q: Winter Warfare prevents Fusami from moving, does the 'and' prevent her from challenging the attacking enemy personality?
A: Rules, Effects: "Effects are negated individually; negating one effect of an action does not automatically negate the others(.)" Zen Faulkes, "Fusami + Winter Warfare", 12 Jul 2007
