Rulings
- Does not require bowing the Personality he moves onto using his ability. [JA, 12 December 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 40
- Does not gain stat and trait bonuses from Tattoos, because he may not "use" Tattoos. [JA, 12 December 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 40
- Cannot be targeted by a Tattoo action that requires a particular type of Personality (e.g., monk or shugenja for Moth Tattoo). [JA, 13 December 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 40
- Q: How does the Dragon Tattoo work with Gaijutsu no Shiryo? A: The act of using the Dragon Tattoo's Open action to gain one or more Fire tokens permanently applies the effects "cannot have more than three Fire tokens", "cannot straighten if he or she has any Fire tokens", and "Remove a Fire token from this Personality instead of straightening him or her during the Straighten Phase." to the Personality. Even if the Personality loses the Dragon Tattoo or its ability later in the game (for example, because Gaijutsu no Shiryo moves to a different Personality), those restrictions will stay with him. The restrictions are part of the Personality who made the tokens, not the tokens themselves. Moving one of these Fire tokens onto a Personality who has never used the Dragon Tattoo's action will have no adverse affects on him. He'll just get the +1F/+1C bonus. Rules Q&A
- Q: Another question on Gaijutsu no Shiryo: Can he be targetted with a Moth Tattoo, since that tattoo specifically states that it needs to target a monk or shugenja personality with the tattooed trait?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 December 2002", 14 Dec 2002 - Q: Re-asking this question since questions on BB cards are now being answered.
If Hitomi Hogai has a tattoo, could I move Gaijutsu no Shiryo (with tattoos attached) to Hogai?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 August 2002", 17 Aug 2002 - Q: If Hitomi Hogai has a tattoo, could I move Gaijutsu no Shiryo (with tattoos attached) to Hogai? And if I can, can Hogai use those tattoos?
A: Ask again when Hogai has been released, please. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 July 2002", 30 Jul 2002 - Q: Also does this actually effect a personality who had the Dragon ancestor Gaijutsu no Shiryo on them that has the dragon tattoo attached?
A: It affects any Personality who has ever used the Dragon Tattoo's action to make Fire tokens, whether he has the Tattoo through direct play or that Ancesotr. It does not affect a Personality who has a Dragon Tattoo but has not yet used it this game. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 April 2002", 2 Apr 2002 - Q: In the case of the Dragon Tattoo, that is another wording error. The straightening restriction, as worded on the card, comes not from the Fire tokens, but from the ability itself.
A: Correct. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 March 2002", 30 Mar 2002 - Q: What is the logic behind the ruling? It would seem that it is not a ruling but erata to me. In which case why not make MRP/eratta dragon tattoo such that the tokens have all that traits?
A: That would produce similar (not identical) results and possibly be easier to understand, but it would be a greater change to the card than the current ruling, so I am disinclined to go that route. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 March 2002", 30 Mar 2002 - Q: I understand fixing abusive and environment altering abilities, but I have yet to see the fire token combo get out of hand and warrant an MRP. The Under-Hand, yes, that needed fixing. Finding the Harmony, yep, that too. Dragon Tattoo, .... Why?
A: Because it was functioning extremely counter to how it was originally intended. Dragon Tattoo, the various Experience levels of Togashi Mitsu... since the beginning of time they've never worked quite right when things got even the slightest bit tricky, and Gaijutsu no Shiryo was only magnifying the problem. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 March 2002", 30 Mar 2002 - Q: Perhaps dragon tattoo should be re-mrped to reflect this change
It should and it will, as soon as it is convenient to do so.
Could we get some sort of non-final text to work with as an errata rather than having the ruling up in the air causing confusion?
A: Sure.
Everyone else, pay attention to this! This will clear up a lot of your questions. This is not an official MRP, but it does encapsulate the latest ruling exactly.
Limited: Target one of your Personalities with the Tattooed trait and without a Dragon Tattoo. For the rest of the game, the Personality has a Dragon Tattoo and gains the ability "Open: Place one to three +1F/+1C Fire tokens on this Personality. For the rest of the game, this Personality cannot have more than three Fire tokens, cannot straighten by any means if he or she has any Fire tokens, and removes a Fire token instead of straightening during the Straighten Phase if he or she has Fire tokens." Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 March 2002", 30 Mar 2002 - Q: I've got Gaijutsu no Shiryo with a Dragon Tattoo on Samurai A.
Samurai A gets 3 fire tokens.
Gaijutsu no Shiryo moves to Samurai B.
Samurai B gets 3 fire tokens.
I move 1 fire token from Samurai B to Samurai A using Sympathetic Energies.
Samurai A has 4 fire tokens. Samurai B has 2 fire tokens.
On my next turn, I move Gaijutsu no Shiryo back to Samurai A.
Samurai A now has the "may not have more than 3 tokens" restriction.
What happens to the 4th token?
A: Nothing. It's like having four Spells on a 4C Shugenja and then giving the Shugenja -1C. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 February 2002", 2 Feb 2002 - Q: Do personaliteis to whom you move Gaijutsu no Shiryo bow, as per normaly attaching an ancestor.
A: No. Bowing is only a cost of attaching an Ancestor from your hand [AOF rulebook pp. 29-30]. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 January 2002", 16 Jan 2002 - Q: Well, I have read this card several times, and looked at the "Official" post on it, and I still have no clue how this works, though I suspect that I want ot put it in my Dragon deck.
Here is the response from J Alexander on December 11:
Gaijutsu no Shiryo
A Personality who currently does not have a Dragon Tattoo (or the non-Experienced Togashi Mitsu's ability) is not prohibited from straightening by Fire tokens, does not lose Fire tokens each turn, and is not prohibited from having more than a certain number of Fire tokens.
So, does this mean, I attach the ancestor, and give the ancestor a Dragon Tattoo, then pump 3 +1/+1 tokens, then move the ancestor to another Tattooed personality, pump again (after the ancestor straightens),
A: There's no need to wait until the Ancestor straightens. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 December 2001", 19 Dec 2001 - Q: Is Gaijutsu no Shiryo really missing the text 'This card is considered Togashi Gaijutsu for Uniqueness.'? If so will there be an errata or was that done on purpose or has AEG completely forgotten all the cards which are not gold legal?
A: It was done on purpose so there'd be less potential confusion among new players ("Do I have any Togashi Gaijutsus in my deck? Let me check. Was he in Perfect Cut?") and because not printing it gives us a lot more room on the card. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 December 2001", 5 Dec 2001
