Rules Q&A
- Q: The Unaligned trait seems to be a fleeting thing in L5R -- not given as often as one would think, given to those you wouldn't expect, then taken away soon after. My friends and I looked in vain for useful ronin without clan alignments during the first arc (we'd given up by the second) -- they kept getting sucked up into Toturi's Army and YA.
Now we seem to have cut out the middle-man entirely. Why, Powers That Be, isn't the Unaligned trait on a few more Personalities in BB? Specifically, I ask because it is lacking on Garen and Katsu, prime candidates for it. If you wanted it there and this was a mistake, fine. But if there is a thematic reason, please clue us in, because it is utterly opaque.
A: We're deliberately using the "Unaligned" trait in a more intuitive manner now, typically only assigning it to Personalities who are affiliated with none of the Factions in the rulebook. That includes the Shadowlands, because, special affiliation rules notwithstanding, a Personailty with that trait is still conceptually "working for them" rather than being detached from every major group in the game.
