Rules Q&A
- Q: * I know this ruling says the correct timing in case of a Eastern Hub Port vs Gate Guardsman "conflict" is: 1/ trigger stronghold, player will get an additional action; 2/ react with Gate Guardsman, player will take an additional action; 3/ play action granted by the stronghold (including reactions to it), 4/ play action granted by Gate Guardsman. But this all relies on the fact that the "Equip" Battle action is still considered "in progress"; is this correct?
A: That ruling is out-dated. It has been over-ruled and addressed several times already.
Taking an Additional Action simply becomes a Delayed Effect with the timing "after [Action X] resolves." Such actions take place before any new Triggered Effects or Reactions to "after [Action X] resolves" can be introduced since Delayed Effects happen at Timing Step D while Triggered Effects happen at Step E and Reactions at Step F.
Eastern Hub Port does not trigger while a Battle action is "in progress." You activate it in Step E after the Equip Action resolves and it immediately applies. Superior Strategist, however, does give an effect instruction during its "Resolve Effects" step to take an additional action - and it must be Delayed until "after Superior Strategist resolves." Martin Lund, "Another "additional action" question", 26 Nov 2007 - Q: According to here and here, the action granted by Eastern Hub Port interrupts the reaction window (occuring before reactions are taken).
1)Does this mean that all granted additional actions now interrupt? Can the reaction on Gate Guardsman now be used to interrupt the Strike Summit/Center/Base chain? or 2)Is Eastern Hub Port different due to the action being granted by a trait rather than by a reaction?
If the answer is #2, can we assume that all actions granted by traits will interrupt, but actions granted by reactions will not?
A: As per the Comprehensive Rules, there is currently no rule that prevents a Trait or Reaction that grants an additional opportunity to take a Battle Action in the "after resolving" timing window from immediately granting you that opportunity to act.
Delayed Effects (such as 'take another Battle action' instructions from the newly resolved Battle Action) always happen first.
Then you resolve Trait Triggers.
Then you have the opportunity to take Reactions.
Gate Guardsman could, in theory, interrupt the Strike Chain if the Gate Guardsman is controlled by the Active Player.
Incidentally, this issue was covered by RogerGS, the rules team lead, here several months ago. Martin Lund, "Eastern Hub Port, Gate Guardsman and Strike Chain", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: In this post you indicate that the triggered trait on Eastern Hub Port occurs before the reaction on Gate Guardsman. OK.
The response to the question: "1b - If my previous question is right and during my next action Gate Guardsman is destroyed he'll never get the chance to react right?" was "Correct"
This directly conflicts with this post here. According to that post, the Battle action from Eastern Hub Port is a delayed effect. That would allow Gate Guardsman to take his reaction BEFORE the additional action from Eastern Hub Port is actually taken.
Which is correct?
A: The most recent ruling is correct until such time as changes are made in the Comprehensive Rules. The current ruling was what we settled on for Gen-Con, and upon further review we haven't had much cause to change things. Martin Lund, "RE:Eastern Hub Port & Pincers and Tail vs Gate Guardsman", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: I declare naval invasion and then use a battle action that targets my personality (ex: The Manti's Strenght) to kill the Ikoma Random ok? Well, then it's time to make reactions. As the active player my first reaction is to attach Pincers and Tail to my Yoritomo Random who have performed the battle action. When I do this what will happen?
1a - The reaction window is going to be interrupted by my stronghold effect and I will have the chance to take an additional battle action?
A: Triggered traits on cards are always taken before Reactions, so Eastern Hub Port's triggered trait will resolve before any Reactions to attaching Pincers and Tail can be played - if it were legally triggered in the first place.
Mantis's Strength does not attach anything, so it won't trigger Eastern Hub Port.
Pincer's and Tail's Reaction is not a Battle Action, so it won't trigger Eastern Hub Port either. Martin Lund, "Eastern Hub Port & Pincers and Tail vs Gate Guardsman", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: Reaction: After another player’s action destroys one of your attachment cards or it’s Personality: Attach the card to one of your target Personalities (paying all costs).
Reaction: After another player resolves a Battle Action, if this unit is at the current battlefield: Take an additional Battle action.
A: So Fortified Camp gets used in the middle of the offending Action's "Resolve Effects" step. It brings back the Gate Guardsman.
Gate Guardsman gets used after the offending Action's "Resolve Effects" step is over. It is returned to play in time to use its Reaction to the very Action that first killed it. Martin Lund, "Gate Guardsman & Fortified Camp", 2 Nov 2007 - Q: At the current battlefield, I control two Gate Guardsman. My opponent takes a Battle Action. I react using Gate Guardsman's Reaction and take an additional battle action. Can I react with the other Gate Guardsman and take another battle action or has the reaction trigger passed when I took the additional action granted by the first reaction.
A: Reaction triggers don't "expire" on their own; players must deliberately pass. Comprehensive Rules, Timing: "Starting with the active player, each player in turn order has the option to take a Reaction to the trigger or pass. When all players pass consecutively, no more Reactions to that occurrence of the trigger may be taken." Zen Faulkes, "Multiple Gate Guardsman", 4 Aug 2007 - Q: Kiho Battle: Bow one of your Rings and target one of your unbowed Monks: Move home a target Personality opposing him. Bow the Personality if he moved. You may discard a card: If you do, search your deck for a Strike the Center, show it, and put it in your hand.
A: So before Strike the Summit has completely Resolved the player taking the Action has gotten the chance to add Strike the Center to his hand.
Now comes the chance to play Reactions "after resolving" Strike the Summit. The Active Player goes first and then it continues around the table in Turn Order.
If the Active Player is the one who controls Gate Guardsman, he can play the Reaction. The Additional opportunity to take a Battle Action becomes a Delayed Trigger that will resolve later.
Now the player with Strike the Center can play it as a Reaction and get Strike the Base.
Again, the Active Plater gets first Reaction to Strike the Center resolving and it passes in Turn Order.
The player with Strike the Base plays it as a Reaction.
Again, the Active Plater gets first Reaction to Strike the Center resolving and it passes in Turn Order.
Everybody passes a whole lot.
Once there are no further Reactions to the original Battle Action (Strike the Summit), the controller of Gate Guardsman takes his additional Battle Action.
Now, if the player of Strike the Summit were the Active player, he'd effectively be able to play his enter Strike Chain before Gate Guardsman ever got to React to Strike the Summit.
Either way the additional Action from Gate Guardsman isn't going to break up the Strike Chain. Martin Lund, "re:East Hub vs. Gate Guardsman applied to reactions", 3 Aug 2007 - Q: Whenever an effect grants an additional action while another action of the same designator is in progress, the timing of the additional action is delayed until the current action resolves. This makes sure that Battle actions can not occur within other Battle actions, and so on.
A: I'll see if this can't be spruced up to be a little more clear on the issue. Martin Lund, "Eastern Hub Port VS Gate Guardsman", 3 Aug 2007
