Rules Q&A
- Q: With regard to this answer.
Not sure the indicated rule applies since Shigetoshi would be destroyed during the "pay costs" step well before effect resolution, right?
I don't disagree with the ruling, but the reasoning seems flawed to me. Shigetoshi's destruction is a cost not an effect. If the reasoning is flawed that is more confusing to players than the ruling itself. So I ask is this really the right explanation for why it works this way?
I would have though it was because: While it is true that abilities cannot be used on cards from an out of play area without express exceptions in the ability itself, that is a condition of announcement and is only checked at anouncement and not required at any point after that. At which point Shigetoshi is in play, making the play legal. Even if Shigetoshi leaves play to pay the cost of the ability after that, the only way effect resolution gets stopped is if that destruction is some how interfered with, per the rules governing interfering with/paying costs.
If this is not the correct explanation, why is Zen's explanation the correct one?
A: The line quoted by Zen could probably be phrased better. It's actually implied by earlier paragraphs, such as this one under B, Explicit performing and required targeting: If any of an action's targeting or performing choices become illegal at any point after the particular choice has occurred, the action still proceeds.
Furthermore, as you point out, the only time the implied condition "If this card is in play" is checked is during A, Announce the Action: The only time an action’s conditions are normally checked is when it is announced. Alex Jones, "Akodo Shigetoshi (Experienced 2)", 1 Nov 2011 - Q: Akodo Shigetoshi - exp2: If I kill Shigetoshi himself, does the action resolves right after his destruction or I am able to go on with the effects (Destroying an enemy card).
A: Continue with those effects. Effects do not stop because the card they are printed on is destroyed.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_a ... resolution: "Once the action resolution has begun, effects that influence the action’s ability to have been taken in the first place do not influence the activation of the action’s effects.
"Example: If... the ability’s card leaves play during resolution, all remaining effects are still activated." Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Shigetoshi (Experienced 2)", 31 Oct 2011 - Q: So based on akodogilador's response here.
I guess that means even though all three cards(Akodo Shigetoshi, Cavalry Officer, Daigotsu Bukaro) are worded as "target a personality", they are effectively "target your personality".
So much for EE being "premium" edition. So much for cards not being confusing for new players. Technical errata for at least Bukaro would be nice, unless the rules are going to change and suddenly he will work the way he is worded, but I won't be holding my breath on that one. Disappointing.
A: Flaming is a violation of Forum Rules. Official Warning. Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Shigetoshi", 12 Jun 2011 - Q: In regards to this.
Does this mean that I can still target anybody, but the effects will fail due to the rules? Or does it mean i can only target my personalities (good faith rule)? Seems like the former, not sure if there is a janktastic combo in there or not, but if it works i'll try and find one.
A: These two paragraphs of the Good Faith Rule explain why you can only target one of your Personalities with Shigetoshi's and Bukaro's actions:
If the action involves putting one or more cards into play as a non-optional effect, the player must be able to meet all costs and requirements to bring those cards into play legally, in order to meet the Good Faith rule. This includes having a Personality who can legally attach any attachments to be brought into play. A player cannot announce an action on the basis of a legal card to play, but then choose an illegal attachment or Personality for the actual play choice. Alex Jones, "Akodo Shigetoshi", 10 Jun 2011 - Q: Akodo Shigetoshi (Experienced 2) Lion Clan • Clan Champion • Samurai • Tactician • Commander • Experienced 2 • Loyal • Unique Reaction: After Shigetoshi enters play: Create a 2F Follower and attach it to a target Personality. Battle: Destroy your target Personality or Follower: Destroy a target enemy card; if your own targeted card was a Follower, the targeted enemy card must have no attachments.
Can I attach the follower created to another players' personality? Like a Cavalry personality perhaps? I ask because "a target personality" is pretty broad.
A: Card types, Playing attachments: A player may only attach attachments to a Personality he controls. Alex Jones, "Akodo Shigetoshi", 7 Jun 2011 - Q: What happens with this scenario:
1) I use blowdarts/takuma/whatever to create 4 poison tokens on Akodo Shigetoshi Exp2... (so now he's at 1 force) 2) My opponent attacks with Akodo Shigetoshi Exp2 then I defend with Sogetsu... 3) My first action as a defender: I use Sogetsu's ability and set Akodo Shigetoshi Exp2's force to 0... (would that mean he has -4 force (minimum 0) after reasserting the tokens' penalties?) 4) His first action as the attacker: He uses Akodo Shigetoshi Exp2's Tactician trait and discards a 4 focus value card to pump his force...
What happens then? (What would Akodo Shigetoshi Exp2's force be?)
We have our arguments here but we need to verify which one's the right one... Problems about reasserting the poison tokens' penalties... and sequence of actions...etc...
A: Setting stats to a value: To set a stat to a value, give it the smallest possible appropriate bonus or penalty such that it reaches that value.
If Akodo Shigetoshi has 1f because of penalties, the smallest appropriate penalty to reduce his force to 0 is 1: after Sogetsu's action resolves his force is 5 + (4 * -1) - 1 = 0f. After Shigetoshi "Tacticians a 4", his force is 5 + (4 * -1) - 1 + 4 = 4f. Alex Jones, "Shosuro Sogetsu, Poison Tokens & Force Bonuses/Tactizing", 3 Nov 2009
