Rules Q&A
- Q: So based on akodogilador's response here.
I guess that means even though all three cards(Akodo Shigetoshi, Cavalry Officer, Daigotsu Bukaro) are worded as "target a personality", they are effectively "target your personality".
So much for EE being "premium" edition. So much for cards not being confusing for new players. Technical errata for at least Bukaro would be nice, unless the rules are going to change and suddenly he will work the way he is worded, but I won't be holding my breath on that one. Disappointing.
A: Flaming is a violation of Forum Rules. Official Warning. Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Shigetoshi", 12 Jun 2011 - Q: What happens with this scenario:
1) I use blowdarts/takuma/whatever to create 4 poison tokens on Akodo Shigetoshi Exp2... (so now he's at 1 force) 2) My opponent attacks with Akodo Shigetoshi Exp2 then I defend with Sogetsu... 3) My first action as a defender: I use Sogetsu's ability and set Akodo Shigetoshi Exp2's force to 0... (would that mean he has -4 force (minimum 0) after reasserting the tokens' penalties?) 4) His first action as the attacker: He uses Akodo Shigetoshi Exp2's Tactician trait and discards a 4 focus value card to pump his force...
What happens then? (What would Akodo Shigetoshi Exp2's force be?)
We have our arguments here but we need to verify which one's the right one... Problems about reasserting the poison tokens' penalties... and sequence of actions...etc...
A: Setting stats to a value: To set a stat to a value, give it the smallest possible appropriate bonus or penalty such that it reaches that value.
If Akodo Shigetoshi has 1f because of penalties, the smallest appropriate penalty to reduce his force to 0 is 1: after Sogetsu's action resolves his force is 5 + (4 * -1) - 1 = 0f. After Shigetoshi "Tacticians a 4", his force is 5 + (4 * -1) - 1 + 4 = 4f. Alex Jones, "Shosuro Sogetsu, Poison Tokens & Force Bonuses/Tactizing", 3 Nov 2009 - Q: Pertaining to Akodo Shigetoshi Exp (Khan's Defiance) and Resumed Hostilities (Samurai), if the ability that Shigetoshi gives all tacticians that a player controls is removed by resumed hostilities, would his trait immediately give it back to the personality that it was removed from?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Continuous_traits: "If an effect granted by a continuous trait is negated or undone by another cost or effect, the continuous trait does not immediately apply again." Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Shigetoshi Exp and Resumed Hostilities", 27 Apr 2009 - Q: Hi there,
I am a little confused with the following two rules as read in the SE rulebook: The Naval rule, found on page 49, and the Perform rule, found on page 50. The situation I am confused about is this one: I have a Naval personality that has a battle action. I am attacking and would like to perform his action as the first action at a battle, as per the Naval rule. However, this personality's action has a cost that requires bowing/destroying a follower, and as per the Perform rules on page 50 this means the follower is considered performing the action (I assume BOTH the personality and the follower are performing this kind of action). This particular follower does not have Naval. The Naval rules state it must be performed by a Naval personality or one of his Naval followers. In this case the action is performed by a Naval personality AND a non-Naval Follower. Can I take the action?
The cards involved are Akodo Shigetoshi exp. and Ikoma Otemi exp. 3. with any given non-Naval Follower attached.
Thanks so much for clearing this up for me!
(PS, I would just like to add that my money is on 'yes you can' and that I cry when I lose money Either way, an explanation would be most welcome)
A: In the Rules Glossary for "From" there is an exception (see here)
It states "Costs and effects of traits and abilities given to other cards, copied from other cards, or on created cards, come from the card they are currently on. "
The ability granted by Akodo Shigetoshi experienced is on Ikoma Otemi Experienced 3.
Ikoma Otemi Experienced 3 performs that granted action. The follower (in this case) does not.
He can therefore use it via the action granted by his Naval Keyword. Dan Jacobson, "Naval and Performing", 5 Jan 2009 - Q: aah, is it because of this?
A: That's it. Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Shigetoshi XP and Hall of Ancestors", 15 Feb 2008 - Q: Is akodo shigetoshis action considered printed on him for using doomed intentions.
A: No. It's a trait. Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Shigetoshi and Doomed Intentions", 16 Jan 2008 - Q: A Personality or Follower is performing an action if its controller is the player taking the action, and any of these things is true:
* The action comes from an ability on the Personality or Follower. * The action comes from an ability on an Item or Spell in the Personality’s unit. * The Personality or Follower was targeted by targeting in the ability’s constraints block (between the two colons).
A: The ability granted by Akodo Shigetoshi does not target the Personality or Follower you destroy - so they don't perform the Action. Martin Lund, "Akodo Shigetoshi", 10 Jan 2008 - Q: One of the people in my gaming group has an annoying tactic to try to win games, which involves finding any awkward wording he can and manipulate it to his favor, and he tries to argue obviously wrong rulings until we concede to shut him up.
Such as last night. I declared an attack against him with my Lion army of Ikoma Noda, Akodo Shigetoshi xp, and Akodo Hachigoro. Hachigoro had a bowed Gate Gaurdsman attached. My friend had two Unicorn Shugenja out, neither with a Follower. Naturally, I figure I can pop my bowed Gate Gaurdsman to destroy one of his peeps without Followers, thanks to Shigetoshi. My friend then comes along and says he remembers a rule that says bowed cards can't pay costs at all. I try to explain to him that bowed cards can't pay the cost of bowing, but they can pay any other cost. I relent, because it was annoying, and just didn't assign. I was correct here, right?
Later on that night, I had the same army out, but this time with a straightened Gate Gaurdsman. However, my friend strikes again when I try to use Hachigoro's Reaction. Now, the trigger for Hachigoro's Reaction reads 'Reaction: If you are attacking, after armies at Hachigoro's battlefield engage:'. My friend tries to tell me Hachigoro's Reaction doesn't go off because he didn't assign any units to the defending army, thus only one army is engaging. He tried to tell me that because only one army was engaging, not two or more 'armies', I can't use Hachigoro's Reaction. Please tell me he's wrong about this.
A: He's wrong on both. Nothing prevents bowed cards from paying costs that they are able to pay. "When armies engage" is a timing point and does not require the presence of either army to allow reactions to said timing point. Chris Fuchs, "Need some clarification...", 31 Oct 2007 - Q: Am I correct in presuming that Akodo Shigetoshi experienced does not in reality give himself the Ability in his trait while he is not in play?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Traits: "While their card is out of play, continuous traits affect the card they are on(.)" Zen Faulkes, "Re: Akodo Shigetoshi Clarification", 30 Sep 2007 - Q: Can I copy ONLY this part of (Akodo) Shigetoshi's trait with the hall of ancestors? : "Tactical Battle: Destroy a Personality or Follower in this army: Destroy a target Follower or Personality without Followers opposing it."
A: Assuming you mean the Experienced Akodo Shigetoshi...
Strictly speaking, no. It's part of a trait, not an action. But because Akodo Shigetoshi Experienced 2 is a Tactician, he will normally have the ability anyway, and that can be copied directly. Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Shigetoshi clarification", 28 Sep 2007 - Q: I have Akodo Shigetoshi experienced dead in my discard pile. Can I copy his trait ("your tacticians have the ability: tactical battle...") using the Hall of Ancestors to another Lion personality?
A: Not an ability or keyword. No. Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Shigetoshi experienced and Hall of Ancestors", 15 Aug 2007
