Rules Q&A
- Q: Title Glory of the Shogun Rarity Rare Edition Web of Lies Text For the rest of the game, attaching cards from player's hands to their Personalities is an Open action. Additionally, each player may draw a card once per turn after attaching from his hand a card with a Gold cost greater than 4.
OK my question is: does this count printed Gold cost or actual Gold cost paid?
A: It counts the current gold cost of the follower when played - not the printed cost. If you reduce the cost below 5, then it won't count. Martin Lund, "Rules for 31 January 2005", 4 Feb 2005 - Q: Glory of the Shogun Until the game ends, equipping is a Battle/Open action (for all players), and after the first time each turn each player attaches a card with a base Gold Cost of 5 or more from his hand, that player may draw a card.
Indecision Reaction: After an action resolves, if its player has resolved two or more actions which put cards into his hand this phase: He discards two cards.
The Scorpion Wall is Finished Until the game ends, other players' actions will not discard cards from your hand, and if a player has resolved two actions that put cards in his hand in one phase, no more cards will be put into his hand that phase.
(Emphasis mine)
As my first Limited action I attach a card from hand with 5+GC to my personality and draw a card. Have I put a card in hand from an action for the sake of indecision/Scorpion wall?
I've had judges at tournaments say that it has been ruled both ways online and yet I couldn't find the ruling anywhere.
Thanks in advance.
A: The ongoing, indefinite conditional effect from Glory of the Shogun is what put the card in your hand, not whatever action attached the card that activated said effect.
Therefore, drawing a card from it does NOT count toward Indecision or The Scorpion Wall is Finished.
And no, it's never been ruled here any differently than that. Brook Cunningham, "Glory of the Shogun + Indecision/Scorpion Wall", 16 Sep 2012 - Q: Assuming both events are in effect, if my opponent destroys one of my followers with 0 Gold Cost (ex. Bandit Gang), I think I can reattach it to the same personnality on my next opportunity to take a battle action.
We couldn't think of a reason for it not to be correct, but as we only recently came back into the game after a hiatus of several years, we were wondering whether we had miss something about this situation which effectively shut all the ranged attacks my opponents wanted to throw at my personnality.
A: Yes, with both Events having been resolved in a game, you could continually reattach a Follower who keeps getting destroyed, as long as you can continue to pay their entering play costs (which is not a problem with your example of Bandit Gang). Ben Higgins, "Never Enough Soldiers + Glory of the Shogun", 31 May 2012 - Q: Might be a noobish question but i need a clarification to the following question.
If i have a glory of the shogun in play (or my opponent or both) and i attach a weapon from my hand via my stronghold's ability does that mean that i will be able to draw a card from Glory of the shogun plus the card for the end of my turn ? Thanks in advance !
Glory Of The Shogun text Until the game ends, equipping is a Battle/Open action (for all players), and after the first time each turn each player attaches a card with a base Gold Cost of 5 or more from his hand, that player may draw a card.
The Spider's Web text After your Personality enters play: You may attach a Weapon to him from your hand, paying all costs but, once per turn, paying 4 less Gold if he is a Kensai.
A: Yes, if it was the first time you'd done it that turn, you would draw a card (or two, if both you and your opponent had resolved Glory of the Shogun) immediately after attaching a Weapon of 5 or more base Gold Cost via The Spider's Web's trait, and you would still get your normal draw in your End Phase.
Even though Glory of the Shogun modifies the Equip ability to Battle/Open, the draw from it is a separate effect and is not dependent upon you using it. Brook Cunningham, "Glory of the Shogun and The Spider's Web", 16 Apr 2012 - Q: Glory of the Shogun (event)
Moon and Sun (event)
Question: If you use Moon and Sun to recycle Glory of the Shogun, subsequently if you attach a 5g+ attachment, do you draw two cards?
A: Assuming Glory of the Shogun has resolved a second time after being reshuffled (not stated in your original question), then yes, both draw effects will trigger if you attach a card with a base gold cost of 5 or more. Jon Palmer, "Moon and Sun + Glory of the Shogun", 5 Mar 2012 - Q: If both my opponent and myself have resolved Glory of the Shogun and then I subsequently attach a card with base gold cost of five or more from my hand, May I draw two cards or still only one?
A: Two cards. In this case your attachment will trigger the draw effect of both copies of Glory of the Shogun. Jon Palmer, "Glory of the Shogun", 19 Feb 2012 - Q: In regard to this ruling: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=95584
I am a little confused. He says that that is correct. But, he then goes on to say that it modifies the Limited, but he doesn't say it also modifies the Battle equip for spells?
The question I have is, if Glory is played, will this modify the Battle equip for spells? And if it does, will it eliminate the extra action granted?
So, If I have it in my deck against a spell deck, it would hurt them as well as help me?
Thank you.
A: Please read all the way to the bottom of his answer. Glory does in fact modify the Battle ability of Equip to become a Battle/Open, but that has absolutely no effect on the way the ability plays (as the Open portion is never legal anyway). The extra action remains.
Glory of the Shogun will not hurt you if you put it in your deck (unless you're playing Legacy, and Doom of the Dark Lord has resolved, and your Fate deck is empty, and the card draw triggers...) Jon Palmer, "Glory of the Shogun and Spells again", 18 Jan 2012 - Q: If I play "Again!" on my Kensai and later that battle attach a Weapon say via "Glory of the Shogun" or "Readied Steel" may I use the Battle abilities of that weapon a second time despite the fact that it was not attached at the time I played "Again!"?
Second If I use Daigotsu Kanpeki to preform "Again" can I use his reaction after the resolution of "Again" to take additional action, if so dose that occur before or after the additional action granted by "Again!"?
Relevant text
Again! Battle: Chose your performing Kensai: Straighten him and all his Weapons. Battle abilities on his Weapons may be used a second time this turn. You may take an additional Battle action.
Daigotsu Kanpeki Reaction: After the resolution of a Battle action from a Strategy, if Kanpeki performed it: Take an additional Battle action.
A: Attaching a weapon to a Personality who has been targeted by Again!, does not allow you to use its Battle abilties a second time this turn. The clause "his Weapons" is evaluated at the point in time when the effect is applied, which is immediately, in the case of an ongoing effect such as Again!'s. Compare Frenzy, which destroys the Personality's Followers through a delayed effect: "his attached Followers" is evaluated when the effect is applied - "Before the turn ends" - so Followers which have been transferred out of his unit are not destroyed by Frenzy.
For more information on "activating" vs "applying" effects, see Abilities and Actions, Action Resolution.
For your second question, see Additional action: When an additional action is granted while a non-Reaction action is in progress, the timing of the additional action is delayed: the opportunity to take it happens once the current non-Reaction action has ended, and once the opportunity to play Reactions to the end of the action has passed. This makes sure that Battle actions can not occur within other Battle actions, or Limited/Opens within other Limited/Opens. The additional actions granted by Again! (first emphasis) and by Kanpeki's ability (second emphasis) are both delayed to the same point in time, so the active player decides which action is taken first. Alex Jones, "More "Again!" Questions", 10 Jan 2012 - Q: Regarding this: viewtopic.php?p=1266640#p1266640
Just to sort something out for myself to make sure I understanding right. Because the way I read that question and answer it almost sounds like Glory of the Shogun has overridden the rulebook Battle: Equip action.
Scenario: I have Glory of the Shogun in play.
I go to a battlefield and use the rulebook Battle: Equip action to attach a spell in my hand to my opposed, unbowed shugenja the first time that turn. The spell has a base gold cost of 5 of more.
Will my use of the rulebook Battle: Equip action give me an extra action still? Does my use of the rulebook Battle: Equip action allow me to draw a card (from Glory of the Shogun's effect) because the spell was 5g or more?
A: Glory of the Shogun is only meant to modify the Limited Equip action, not the Battle one.
Granted, as worded, it technically does also modify the Battle one, but making the Battle Equip into Battle/Open is pointless, because you could never use it as an Open based upon its restriction that the performer be opposed. And in both cases, the part of Equip before the first colon is the only part Glory modifies; so, with the Battle one, you would still get your additional action.
Lastly, the drawing aspect of Glory of the Shogun is a separate effect, in no way tied to the Equip ability. No matter how you attach a card with a base Gold Cost of 5 or more, the first time you do each turn, you may draw a card. Brook Cunningham, "Glory of the Shogun and spells", 9 Jan 2012 - Q: If I have the event Glory of the Shogun resolve and then later on my turn I attack and have a bowed unopposed shugenja at a battle would I be able to equip a spell on him?
Glory of the Shogun: Until the game ends, equipping is a Battle/Open action (for all players), and after the first time each turn each player attaches a card with a base Gold Cost of 5 or more from his hand, that player may draw a card.
Equip (From the KE rulebook) Limited: Any number of times per turn, choose your performing Personality and target an attachment card in your hand: Attach it to him, paying all costs.
There is a second Equip ability that may be used to attach Spells during battle.
Battle: Any number of times per turn, choose your performing unbowed opposed Shugenja and target a Spell in your hand: Attach it to him, paying all costs. You may take an additional action to use a Battle ability on that Spell.
I would think the answer would be yes as the limited action that you would use to attach spells on your turn is now a battle/open action although you would not get the additional action. Is this correct?
A: Yes, that's correct.
Glory of the Shogun modifies the Limited Equip ability. Brook Cunningham, "Glory of the Shogun and spells", 6 Jan 2012 - Q: So I was looking around for recent rulings dealing with phrases such as "the First Time...", and I found this.
I know this is an older ruling, but I'd like it revisted, and here is why. I feel the phrase "the first time each turn a player X" is ambiguous with respect to how many times this can be triggered, given that a game that has not ended always has at least two players, and each player has an opportunity to do X and have it be the first time in the trigger window that player has caused X to happen.
Using "any" in place of "a" makes it clear that the trigger for this effect only happens "once per turn", instead of once per turn per player, by explicitly coalescing the set of all triggers together and looking for the first one. Where as the "a player" expresses a more compartmentalized trigger that allows for being interpreted as a per player effect. Gramatically "a" refers to only a single entity at a time after all, thus the confusion.
Further, if the intention were to be multi-player triggers "each" could be used. This appears to be the case already, Glory of the Shogun. This would also be reinforced by the definition of "any" in the glosary... "Any: One or More" Thus the interpretation of the errata text becomes clearly singular instance, vs singular player instance.
I would suggest "technical errata" for this card as such to avoid future confusion for new players that was clearly evident in the original posters question.
Until your next turn begins, after the first time each turn any player attaches a card from his hand, draw a card.
A: So noted. Zen Faulkes, "Festival of the River Souls", 30 Mar 2011 - Q: I couldn't find the answer to this question using the search function.
Assuming the event Glory of the Shogun has resolved. A player plays Few Against Many for its Limited ability to attach a follower to reduce its Gold Cost until it attaches. If the follower's initial Gold Cost was greater than 5, then reduced to below 5 by Few Against Many, will the aforementioned player be able to draw a card as per Glory of the Shogun? When does the Follower's Gold Cost "revert" in this case?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Rulings_G#Glory_of_the_Shogun: "Looks for printed Gold Cost stat rather then amount of gold generated."
It doesn't matter how the cost was futzed with during attachment. Zen Faulkes, "Glory of the Shogun + Few Against Many", 15 Dec 2008 - Q: here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=65192&p=837974&hilit=glory+of+the+shogun#p837974 Zen says Glory of the Shogun looks at the cost paid, not the actual cost.
here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=66224 he says its just the gold cost printed on the card, regardless of what you pay.
which is correct?
A: The more recent one. I previously missed the subtle distinction between Gold cost and Gold Cost that the glossary now makes. Zen Faulkes, "Glory of the Shogun and gold costs", 7 Mar 2008 - Q: I apologize if this is asked and answered because I notice someone just updated the glossary entry for "gold cost" last week.
1. I buy my Hida Koun (exp 5), gold cost 15 using a supply outpost AND Glory of the shogun is in play. I attach an Iron Tesubo (paying the additional two gold). Do I get to draw a card?
2. If yes to #1, in the same scenerio, but I attach a ceremonial armor for free with the outpost, do I get to draw a card?
Shogun says "after it attaches" so it would seem that both q's would have yes answers, according to the first section of the rules entry for "gold cost," but I am, in fact, stupid, and it may check the transitional gold cost when attaching and the card draw is the 'after' effect that is triggered. Thanks in advance. All pertinent card info below.
Supply outpost: Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. If this pays for a Personality, you may attach a Follower, Item, or Spell to him from your hand after he enters in play, reducing its Gold cost by 3 until it attaches.
Glory of the Shogun: Equipping attachments is a Battle/Open action for all players. After the first time each turn each player attaches a card with a Gold Cost of 5 or greater from his hand, he may draw a card. These effects last until the end of the game.
Ceremonial armor: Attaches to a Personality with a Gold Cost of 9 or greater for 4 less Gold.
A: Following the current glossary entry (http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_G), Glory of the Shogun looks for the stat, not the amount paid. Changing the Gold cost (lowercase cost = temporary) does not change the Gold Cost (uppercase Cost = stat). Zen Faulkes, "Supply Outpost with Glory of the Shogun; Gold Costs", 6 Mar 2008 - Q: Glory of the Shogun has resolved and I would like to attach a Ceremonial Armor on a personnality costing 9G. The Armor costs 3G when attaching to such a personnality. (Can I) draw a card due to the effect of Glory of the Shogun if I attached an item which actually costs 7G but which I paid 3G.
A: Glory of the Shogun looks for the cost at the time of payment. No.
Correction: Been brought to my attention that there is a difference between "Gold cost" and "Gold Cost", which changes the answer. See viewtopic.php?f=59&t=66224. Zen Faulkes, "Glory of the Shogun and reduced costs", 28 Jan 2008 - Q: Here's another double shot question, mainly about the use of farmlands' ability:
Glory of the Shogun: Equipping attachments is a Battle/Open action for all players. After the first time each turn each player attaches a card with a Gold Cost of 5 or greater from his hand, he may draw a card. These effects last until the end of the game.
+
Farmlands: Farm • Singular Limited: Pay 2 Gold: Create a 1F Follower and attach it to one of your target Personalities.
My first question is, in the following scenario; a crab clan player has returned seeking revenge for the chi death nightmare I last asked about, and has managed to pull 3 Rich Coffers, Farmlands, and a single personality when Glory of the Shogun hits the board and successfully resolves.
Now, more research before the question, the equip action is as follows (from the comprehensive rules site - Sequence of Play):
Equip: Limited: Any number of times per turn, target one of your Personalities: Attach a target attachment card from your hand to him (paying all costs).
Per GotS, equipping attachments can be used as an open and or a battle action, is adding a follower an 'equip attachment' action (vice merely attaching a card from your hand)? Is using the farmlands' ability then also an equip attachment action? Would then the Crab Player be able to assign three followers on his opponents turn using the Rich Coffers to pay for the farmlands' ability?
Thanks muchly!
A: An action that creates a follower is not the same as the rulebook equip action. Glory of the Shogun will not work with the action on Farmlands. Chris Fuchs, "Glory of the Shogun + Farmlands", 23 Jul 2007 - Q: Glory of the Shogun is in play, and I play Scroll Cache to attach a 5 cost spell (that then has it's cost reduced to four). Does the reduction in cost for the spell expire before Glory of the Shogun checks to see if I draw a card for the attachment having a gold cost greater than four?
A: Glory of the Shogun checks what you actually paid. Zen Faulkes, "Cost Reduction, Glory of the Shogun", 20 Nov 2005 - Q: The event Glory of the Shogun was resolved. And I play an item with gold cost more that 4, but, it cost is reduced by some way... (por example, Exquisite armor, costs 6, but costs 3 less Gold when ...), so, it cost 6, but i pay 3... do i draw a card after attaching it?
A: Glory of the Shogun looks for current cost, not printed. No draws for you. Zen Faulkes, "Re: cost reduction and glory of the shogun", 31 Mar 2005 - Q: Emperor Rule set:
Does [Practicing Kata] Negate/override a "something" that gives you Battle/Open "until the end of the game"/"could do otherwise" (i.e- [Glory of the Shogun]/ [Harbingers of War]/ Reserve)
A: Nope, it doesn't override any of the effects you mentioned, because it's not contradictory to them; it's just another effect in addition. For example, in the case of both it and Glory of the Shogun being in effect, you can Battle/Open Equip once per turn and also, additionally, an unlimited number of times. These are not mutually exclusive. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 24 Nov 2023
