Rules Q&A
- Q: In regards to this thread: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=96214&p=1271887&hilit=goju+yurishi#p1271887
I know it's an old post, but a game just came up and I'm being told I have to still focus because of Doji Kazuo - exp's trait and I'm seriously having trouble wrapping my head around this.
By this ruling, am I to believe that a battle duel will still take place even if Yurishi isn't there? Since he is triggered by being targeted and is home before the duel starts?
Or does the duel just fail since his dueling partner isn't there anymore?
It is very dumb if I still have to focus if I don't even have a guy there dueling.
A: The duel is not an effect *on* Goju Yurishi, so it is not negated by his Reaction. However, the duel may create effects, such as "Destroy the duel's loser," which - if Yurishi is the loser - will be an effect on him.
See Effects "on" a card. Alex Jones, "Dueling and Goju Yurishi", 4 Mar 2013 - Q: So my opponent attacks with Hotako and I defend with 2 Yurishi. He plays power of strength targeting both the Yurishi. I react with both the Yurishi and move them both home. If he plays Inexorable can he still target the second Yurishi with the ranged attack?
We figured that if both reacted and moved home the power of the strength would be able to bow one of the Yurishi but because it targets both personalities in the constraints block when it gets to the effects and you have to declare the optional target of the ranged attack the personality isn't a legal target so you wouldn't be able to declare the ranged attack.
A: Your assertion is correct. You cannot target the Ranged Attack in the above scenario, as the Yurishi, being at home, is not a legal target at the time of targeting. Jon Palmer, "Goju Yurishi vs Power of Strength and Inexorable", 1 Jun 2012 - Q: Does this count as the resolution of a battle action that moved Yurishi?
A: No, for the fundamental reason that Yurishi's action is a Reaction, not a Battle action (see here). Brook Cunningham, "Goju Yurishi + Bayushi Mitsuo", 29 Mar 2012 - Q: EDIT: Just wanted to add a request for a description of how Goju Yurushi's reaction and attacment destruction works in general. Are there any effects that would target him and destroy an attachment where his reaction protects the attachment?
A: Within the broad scope of L5R, "in general" can be a very dangerous term.
Please see the above ruling for an example of what you have asked for, but keep in mind that each different card interaction is it's own special case, and should be looked at individually. Ben Higgins, "Goju Yurishi and Sundering Strike", 24 Feb 2012 - Q: If I have Goju Yurishi at a battlefield with an attachment on him and my opponent plays Sundering Strike, I react with Yurishi and move him home as soon as he is targeted as the cost of Sundering Strike. Since he is at home, is his attachment still a legal target for the effects of Sundering Strike?
Thank you
Edited subject to include full card title. -Ryushi
A: In your example above, your opponent can not use the optional effect on Sundering Strike to destroy one of Yurishi's attachments.
Optional targeting happens during an actions resolution, which is in your example well after Yurishi is targeted by and has reacted to the targeting by Sundering Strike with his Reaction. At that point he is home and it is the Rule of Location that prevents his attachments from being targeted by Sundering Strike. Ben Higgins, "Goju Yurishi and Sundering Strike", 24 Feb 2012 - Q: viewtopic.php?p=1271384#p1271384 At what point does an effect that involves a card cross to being an effect ON that card? If I take an action that gives a target personality -2F, is that an effect ON the target personality? If that action instead said "Target a player. His personalities have -2F", is that a single effect ON the target player, or does it create individual effects that are ON each of that player's personalities?
Presumably the inability to delay duels extends to Goju Yurishi (Reaction: After another player's Battle action targets Yurishi: He disappears into the shadows. Move him home. If he is no longer a legal target for the action, negate its effects on him.) allowing the process of the duel to happen and focus effects to still take place even if Yurishi is no longer a legal target for the action creating the duel? I also assume that this does not extend to the EmpEdition Snake Tattoo since it negates all effects and not just effects on one of the personalities?
A: Challenges and duels are effects, but being targeted, being chosen as a performer, issuing a challenge, being challenged or entering a duel does not change in itself the state, stats, keywords, traits or any other aspect of any Personality, so they are not effects "on" any Personality. Thus, these effects are not delayed by Halls of the Forgotten, nor negated by Goju Yurishi's Reaction.
A blanket -2F to all your Personalities changes the stats of each Personality, so for each of your Personalities, it is an effect on that Personality. Alex Jones, "Halls of the forgotten vs duels", 13 Feb 2012 - Q: http://alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=94410
His ability says 'if he no longer is a legal target', but the answer says '[...] keep in mind that there are actions that may target a Personality at home by their own wording, and as such, their affects on Yurishi would not be negated."
A: I re-highlighted your quote. The "not" modifies the "would" to be negative. Brook Cunningham, "Goju Yurishi", 15 Oct 2011 - Q: If the action says 'even if target is at home' (or something like that) and it targets Yurishi, his ability isn't enough to negate the effects on him, right?
A: Yes, that's right. Brook Cunningham, "Goju Yurishi", 15 Oct 2011 - Q: I'm not native english, so I may just be wrong here.
A: It's no problem! We're happy to help. Brook Cunningham, "Goju Yurishi", 15 Oct 2011 - Q: Goju Yurishi - Reaction: After another player's Battle action targets Yurishi: He disappears into the shadows. Move him home. If he is no longer a legal target for the action, negate its effects on him.
Is the Rule of Location enough to fulfill the condition on Yurishi's reaction? Since after moving home, he's no longer at the current battlefield, and the Rule of Location requires the targets of battle actions (barring exceptions) to be at the current battlefield, would that 'infraction' of the Rule of Location be sufficient to negate the effects of the Battle action on Yurishi?
A: For the majority of Battle actions, yes. However, keep in mind that there are actions that may target a Personality at home by their own wording, and as such, their affects on Yurishi would not be negated. Jon Palmer, "Goju Yurishi", 14 Oct 2011 - Q: If Yurishi has a Flawless Assassin attached, and my opponent targets him with a battle action, I can move him home. THEN, if I chose to use the Flawless reaction to return him back to the battleground he came from, would he still be a target for the action when he comes back? The second half of Yurishi's reaction state that the effects get negated, so if that happens before I move him back then he can return safely.
A: Yes, he would still be the target after moving back, and no, the effects upon him would not be negated.
Flawless Assassin reacts immediately after the movement, which occurs before the effect that checks if Yurishi is a legal target. So the Follower moves him back, and he's therefore a legal target when the check occurs, so the effects are not negated.
