Rules Q&A
- Q: Greetings
From this http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=98077&p=1300406&hilit=growing+hostility#p1300406 Need confirmation please. If my growing hostility has resolved and I play imperial charter while my opponent is unable to produce gold, only i get to have the holding correct?
Imperial Charter Limited: If it is not your first turn: Starting with you, each player may create an unbowed Holding with the trait "Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold."
Growing Hostility Unique Destroy all non-Unique Holdings with a base Gold Cost of 0. Until the game ends, Holdings in and out of play have a minimum Gold Cost of 1.
A: Yes: If Growing Hostility has resolved, each holding created by Imperial Charter costs 1g, and this cost must be paid to bring it into play. Alex Jones, "Growing Hostility + Imperial Charter", 5 Mar 2013 - Q: Is it another added cost that is created by growing hostility?
A: No. While the Gold Cost of the created Holding is modified by Growing Hostilities, the cost has always been there from the Holding's normal cost of 0G, which must still be paid. Ben Higgins, "Growing Hostility and Basic Lesson", 16 Jun 2012 - Q: Does the effect count as interference with mandatory costs?
A: No. Interference with mandatory costs only effects costs associated by targeting a specific card. Ben Higgins, "Growing Hostility and Basic Lesson", 16 Jun 2012 - Q: Can I play basic lessons paying four gold but then not pay the 1?
A: No. To even announce Basic Lesson, you need to be able to pay the costs associated by the Holding it creates. (Costs and restrictions: Optional costs) Since you know that Growing Hostility modifies the Gold Cost of the Holding out of play, you would need to have the 1G available to pay for it, prior to announcing the action. Ben Higgins, "Growing Hostility and Basic Lesson", 16 Jun 2012 - Q: Can I pay the 1 gold with luxurious silk since the entering play cost is still part of the action (eg, the phrase create a card is basically create a card and bring it into play)?
A: No. The Gold Cost is on the created Holding and is separate from any effects from Basic Lesson. (Costs and restrictions: Optional costs)
With regards to Basic Lesson not telling one to specifically pay the costs of the Holding it creates entering play, all Costs are mandatory by default. Card effects will explicit state if any costs associated with bringing a card in to play are modified or waived. In the case of Basic Lesson, no such waiver exists, so one must pay all costs to bringing the Holding in to play, even though the effects of Basic Lesson don't specifically state that. Ben Higgins, "Growing Hostility and Basic Lesson", 16 Jun 2012 - Q: So, kind of related to this.
If I have 6 personalities in play and Growing Hostility has already resolved, does Prosperous Village enter play for free or 1 gold?
A: In this particular case, you will still be able to buy Prosperous Village for free.
Growing Hostility gives the Gold Cost stat to a minimum of 1, but Prosperous Village's trait isn't modifying the stat, but rather giving you a temporary discount to it's entering play cost.
As defined here, the use of "Cost" versus "cost" is what allows Prosperous Village's trait to reduce it's entering play cost below the minimum Gold Cost imposed on it by Growing Hostility. Ben Higgins, "Growing Hostility", 26 May 2012 - Q: If I'm playing a game and Growing Hostility has already resolved and I want to play Basic Lesson how much gold do I have to pay? Do I still just pay the four gold or do I need to pay five to make a holding?
A: You must pay the 4g cost of Basic Lesson during the Pay Costs step of the action sequence.
Then, during the Action Resolution step, you must pay the 1g cost of the newly created holding, to bring it into play.
Note that these are completely separate payments, and cannot be combined. Alex Jones, "Growing Hostility and Basic Lesson", 24 May 2012
