Rules Q&A
- Q: Can I do the following:
I announce that I intend to play a card from my hand, and prepare to reveal the card to show what ability on the card is going to be used. I use Kyuden Kyotei's reaction to increase the upcoming focus value by one I use the reaction on Gunso Chitose to straighten Ayano's unit, in response to that political reaction. I resume with playing action from hand, which is revealed to be Two-Front War. I then target Ayano as the personality performing the action, who is a target courtier and able to bow to pay the required cost of Two-Front War.
A: Yes, that interaction looks legal to me. Brook Cunningham, "Timing and Targeting with Kyuden Kyotei and Gunso Chitose", 7 Jun 2008 - Q: As a follow up, how would this ruling change if I was playing a card that said "Target an unbowed Courtier you control"?
A: No change at all. Ayano (in your example) would be straight by the time you reached the targeting step of taking the action.
In both cases, to the best of your knowledge in Good Faith, you will be able to pay the cost or target the required target (in the former and latter questions respectively).
http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_actions#A._Announce_the_action:"Aspects of the game state should be considered under the good faith rule...
The intent of the Good Faith Rule is to prevent players from abusively attempting actions whose costs and requirements they know they cannot fulfill... while at the same time allowing players to take actions whose costs and requirements they know they can fulfill." Brook Cunningham, "Timing and Targeting with Kyuden Kyotei and Gunso Chitose", 7 Jun 2008 - Q: EXCEPTION: In card text, when referring to entering play, attaching, using a trait, or taking an action, "cannot" and "can only" are restrictions on the legality of that thing in the first place, not negation of its effects.
A: Taken from the Glossary C - "Can not"
They are restrictions on the legality of attaching the card. Utemaro does not allow you to ignore restrictions, only honor requirements. You can not legally attach the card to Utemaro. The effect fails and the Gunso Chitose remains where it is, undisturbed. You still lose the Honor. Martin Lund, "Utemaro XP + Gunso Chitose Part 2", 13 Nov 2007
