Rules Q&A
- Q: Gutobo: Recon Open: Target a Province. You have Reconnaissance at its battlefields. Before this turn ends, bring into play each dead Goblin Personality you own who was destroyed this turn during a Combat Segment whose battlefield was at that Province, ignoring Gold costs.
If Gutobo's ability targets a province, attacks the province, and then is subsequently destroyed at the same province, during the combat phase, is the following sequence legal? Gutobo's owner recruits Gutobo Experienced and before the end of his turn, returns the original Gutobo (non-experienced) to play, ignoring costs.
A: Yes, that's completely legal. And sorry, I'm not entirely sure why you might think it's not, so I'm just going to have to guess at my explanation here:
Even though Gutobo Experienced has the "Unique" keyword, his basic version doesn't. Unique only prevents you from controlling two cards with the same title if they BOTH have the "Unique" keyword. Brook Cunningham, "Gutobo and Gutobo Exp", 20 Nov 2014 - Q: if i use Gutobos open, and attack that province, if he dishonors gutobo, and then uses restoring order, am i correct in thinking that the moving home happens then destroys gutobo at home so he cannot use his delayed recon affect to come back?
A: Recon Open: Target a province. Before this turn ends, bring into play each dead Goblin Personality you own who was destroyed this turn during a Combat Segment whose battlefield was at that province, ignoring Gold Costs.
In this case, even if the Personality was at home (or any other location) when destroyed, they were still destroyed during a Combat Segment whose battlefield was at that province, and therefore Gutobo's recon will bring them back into play.
You may have been looking at an older version of the card with a more confusing wording; the above is from the CE Gutobo, but the Khan's Defiance Gutobo on L5Rsearch.com has a less precise wording. Jon Palmer, "Restoring Order / Gutobo", 19 Nov 2011 - Q: Does Gutobos recon open work if i use wedge on some one?
A: No.
Gutobo's Recon Open only returns to play Goblins destroyed "during a Combat Segment" (card text).
Wedge destroys its target "after the battle ends", which is after the Combat Segment has already ended. Brook Cunningham, "Wedge + Gutobo", 25 Feb 2011 - Q: If I use enticement on my opponents gutobo on his turn before he targets a province with his ability, then target one of my provinces with his ability (to enable recon actions... for this example lets say i'm playing a scout deck), and then he defends and dies to an ability at that province, does he come back under my opponents control at the end of turn?
A: No. Since you took the action, the effect would try to return all Goblin Personalities YOU own to play. Brook Cunningham, "Enticement + Gutobo", 17 Apr 2010 - Q: I know it wouldn't come back under MY control because I'm not his owner.
A: That's correct. The effect would simply fail if no Goblins you OWN were destroyed there. Brook Cunningham, "Enticement + Gutobo", 17 Apr 2010 - Q: Regarding Gutobo, if he uses his Recon action at a province, and a Goblin dies at that Province, when does the Goblin come back, and at what location?
Reading the card, it says "before this turn ends", which would specify this happens after the battle is done with, but it is not very specific on when this happens or where the Goblins come back to.
A: The end of the turn is... well, the end of the turn. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Sequence_of_play#End_Phase. The bit after you discard and before the next player has their turn.
The card enters play where all cards enter play: home. Zen Faulkes, "Gutobo", 19 Aug 2009 - Q: if I play Restoring Order targeting a dishonored Goblin at a province targeted by Gutobo's Recon action, does he die and stay dead, since he gets sent home first, and is no longer at the battlefield when he dies?
A: No, he does not.
It's "destroyed during the Combat Segment at that province's battlefield" -- that is to say, the time of destruction matters. It's not "destroyed at that province's battlefield," which would indicate that the location mattered. Zen Faulkes, "Gutobo", 19 Aug 2009
