Rulings
- Reaction halving Honor gains may only be used once per turn, even if Acquiring Favor is used, because Reactions on a single card can only respond to trigger events (e.g., "When your turn begins") once. [JA, 8 October 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 154
- Only discarding the Imperial Favor is a cost. [JA, 19 December 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 154
Rules Q&A
- Q: I'm playing Kyuden Bayushi in an Open tournament. Can I choose my two winds to be Hantei Naseru and the Underhand? Or does the "Hantei Naseru" trait in the Underhand somehow preclude you from doing this?
A: There is no rule prohibiting you from having two cards in play that share a trait, nor any specific rule making the Winds exclusive from one another. Martin Lund, "Rules for 15 January 2005", 20 Jan 2005 - Q: If you are running Hantei Naseru as your wind and take a dishonored personality with Show of Good Faith for a turn. Can you use Bane of the Anvil to take permanent control of that personality?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 May 2003", 10 May 2003 - Q: Q.1 Hantei Naseru Wind and multiple use If I have the favour and Acquiring the favour in hand, can I react at the start of my turn, using Naseru wind to name two different phases to be affected until the start of my next turn, paying the cost with the favour itself and the card? Or does this fall under reacting to the same trigger twice with one card, even if the costs are paid by different sources?
A: It's using the same printed Reaction more than once to the same trigger. You can't do it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 May 2002", 24 May 2002 - Q: defend hour honor
This card is insane. I've won a strict gold tourney, refusing duels left and right, with Defend Your Honor and Hantei Naseru.
Defend your honor does not stop honor loss from refusing duels. You are causing the honor loss by refusing, not your opponent. As such you can not use the Defend your honor as your opponent is not causing the honor loss.
A: As has been pointed out by several posters by this point: yes it does; no you're not; and yes you can, as he is.
Clear? Jeff Alexander, "post for 11-12 February 2002", 12 Feb 2002 - Q: 1.) My Wind is Hantei Naseru. I have the Imperial Favor in play, as well as a Lobbyist. At the beginning of my opponent's turn, I ditch the Favor to reduce all his gains in his Action Phase by half. I then bow and destroy the Lobbyist for exactly the same effect. Are my opponent's honor gains during the Action Phase then *quartered*?
A: As people have pointed out, A) Naseru is only usable at the beginning of your own turn, and B) he can only be used once, irrespective of how many times you can pay the cost of discarding the Favor, because of the rule against using a single printed Reaction multiple times on the same trigger. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 December 2001", 19 Dec 2001 - Q: this came up in a game last sunday.
i have my personality dishonored. my opponent then uses Shame [to lose 7 honor] on my personality.
i reacted with my Hantei Naseru
my opponent then reacted with his Bayushi Goshiu xp
can i react again with Hantei Naseru?
Thanks
A: Yes, you may react again with Naseru. The sequence is this:
1. Shame is about to give its loss. 1A. You react to the loss with with Naseru's action, discarding the Favor to pay the cost. 1Aa. Before Naseru's action resolves, Goshiu Reacts to its resolution, negating its negation effect, so the loss will still occur. 1B. Does your opponent have a Reaction to Shame's loss? No. Pass. 1C. Do you have another Reaction to Shame's loss? Yes! Naseru's Reaction may be taken any number of times per turn. Here's the kicker, though. Can you pay the cost of discarding the Favor again (notice, at no point above was your first discarding "refunded")? If not, it is illegal to announce Naseru's Reaction again, since you can't pay for it. But if you have some means of doing so (Acquiring Favor, Kyuden Otomo, etc), go for it. Brook Cunningham, "Bayushi Goshiu xp vs Hantei Naseru", 22 Oct 2012 - Q: I have Seppun Sensei in play. 1) Does it prevent me from using effects that would negate my Honor loss (such as Hantei Naseru's first reaction)? 2) If Hantei Naseru's second reaction is activated, will I be unaffected by the honor gain reduction? 3) If Darling of the Season has resolved and I suffer a single 7-point Honor loss (such as Shame), will I lose 5 or 7 honor? 4) If my opponent plays Deeds not Words, will my relevant honor gains become losses?
Seppun Sensei [...] Your Honor losses and gains cannot be changed, redirected or copied.
Darling of the Season Until the end of the game, each player cannot lose more than 5 points of Honor in total from other players' cards in a single turn.
Hantei Naseru Political Reaction: When any player loses Honor, discard the Imperial Favor to negate the loss. Political Reaction: When your turn begins, discard the Imperial Favor as a cost for this action and name a phase. Until your next turn begins, lower all Honor gains to half, rounded down, during that phase of each player's turn. [...]
Deeds, not Words Political Open: Target a player. Until the end of the turn, that player gains 1 Honor in addition to any other award when one of his Personalities wins a duel, and 1 additional Honor for each opposing card destroyed in the Resolution Segment of battle. Honor gains from any other source are counted as losses instead of gains for that player.
A: Please note that any and all of these rulings may change once the Oracle of the Void is released - in particular #4, which is a ruling I remember from playing at the time but could easily be changed with the updated wordings on Seppun Sensei and Deeds, Not Words.
1. You may use abilities such as Hantei Naseru's first reaction, but the Sensei will prevent them from applying.
2. You will be unaffected by the honor gain reduction from Hantei Naseru's second reaction.
3. Darling of the Season will attempt to partially negate the honor gain, and Seppun Sensei will cause this partial negation to fail.
4. Edit: It's been pointed out to me that the Gold Edition MRP of Deeds, Not Words uses a wording that creates a substitution effect, which Seppun Sensei will stop. Jon Palmer, "Seppun Sensei vs. negation, maximum and substitution", 13 Feb 2012
