Rulings
- The Shugenja is destroyed if this effect ends due to him or her straightening. [JA, 13 April 2004] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 63
- Q: Speaking of poorly worded Spells... What's the deal with Heart of Bushido? Wouldn't using it kill the casting Shugenja and end all its benefits as soon as they begin? A: The final "Then" clause refers to what happens when the Shugenja stops being bowed or in play. It is not an immediate effect of casting the Spell. Rules Q&A
- Q: I thought this up, and am having some trouble with it. I have Agasha Seruma cast Heart of Bushido on Shiba Tsukimi, giving Tsukimi +1/+1, and Tactician. My opponent later draws Ryoshun's Gift and destroys the Heart of Bushido. Would the Spell's effects end?
A: Destroying the source of the Action will not automatically stop the Action itself. Once you've cast the spell, all the text after the word "Limited" is in effect regardless of the status of the Spell Card itself. Martin Lund, "Rules for 17 June 2004", 21 Jun 2004 - Q: Also, HOW THW HECK DOES THE HEART OF BUSHIDO WORK??
A: Once you reach the end the duration (until the shugenja unbows or leaves play) of the first effect (give the target +1/+1 and Tactician, Double Chi, or Yu +5), destroy the caster.
The problem with this wording is that you typically go sentence-by-sentence resolving the Action by starting any continuous effects and resolving any instantaneous effects. So you'd normally start the bonus effect, and then you'd read the second sentence and kill your Personality immediately.
That wasn't what Design intended the card to do. It works as I mentioned above (once the shugenja unbows or leaves play, kill him). Martin Lund, "Rules for 7 May 2004", 9 May 2004
