- Erratum: Reads, “Hida Daizu 4F/4C -HR 8G 1PH Crab Clan • Samurai Once per game, after Daizu is destroyed: You may rehonor him and bring him into play (in your home), waiving costs.” [MRP, Samurai Edition, 25 July 2007] Comprehensive Rules, Samurai Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, May 2009, p. 137
Rules Q&A
- Q: Okay, here's the situation. I have a dishonored Hida Daizu with a Senpet Scimitar in play in a battle where he is opposed. I play Deathseeker's Oath on him.
Question 1: At the moment, Hida Daizu is unarguably at 10 force. (4F +4 from Senpet Scimitar, +1 from Deathseeker's Oath, +1 more because DSOath is increased by one due to Senpet Scimitar.) However, how long does that last? Does Daizu become 9 force again once he is no longer opposed?
A: Yes. The duration of the increase is, "While opposed." If you cease to be oppsed, the duration expires. Martin Lund, "Rules for 15 June 2004", 18 Jun 2004 - Q: 1. If you kill a Hida Daizu, and he uses his trait to return to play, does that "Once per game" usage count as a permanent change for the purposes of "The Egg of P'an Ku"? (Would the Egg-copy reflect the fact that he has "used up" one of his lives?)
A: No. That's not a permanent change to his card. His card still says and does the same exact thing. It is simply public knowledge that this copy of Daizu has already been killed once this game. Egg of Daizu has not been killed yet, so he'll be fine. Martin Lund, "Rules for 23 April 2004", 25 Apr 2004 - Q: Hida Daizu: Is this a reaction or a trait?
A: It's a trait. In particular, it's a triggered trait.
If it was a Reaction, it would say "Reaction:" in front of it.
You can see more about traits here: http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Traits
And more on abilities here just underneath: http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Abilities Zen Faulkes, "Hida Daizu", 20 Apr 2008 - Q: Can you choose when you want to bring him back(?)
A: No. From the section on traits (again: http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Traits):
"Effects of triggered traits are not optional – they must happen if the trigger occurs.
"A triggered trait on a given card or stronghold occurs once and only once each time that trigger occurs."
Incidentally, there is no need to post pictures when asking questions in the forum. Quite often, pictures found on the web are based on preview images, and those sometimes differ from the final, printed card. Zen Faulkes, "Hida Daizu", 20 Apr 2008 - Q: Is this a reaction or a trait? Can you choose when you want to bring him back or is that right away? I am confused here.
A: It is a type of trait called a "triggered trait" (http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Traits).
Pertinent to your question is this part of the section I linked:
"Effects of triggered traits are not optional – they must happen if the trigger occurs."
Because I know you're new, and please don't take this as sarcastic condescention: Have you seen the Samurai Edition Comprehensive Rules? It's a dauntingly large document, but highly useful. Brook Cunningham, "Hida Daizu", 20 Apr 2008 - Q: I have Hida Daizu in play (and no other personality), with a O-Shiken attached. I target him with seiden sanzo. Then at the start of my dynasty phase, Hida daizu is destroyed because of Seiden Sanzo. So 0-Shiken goes to the discard pile and Hida Daizu comes back into play (because of his trait). Can i re-attach O-Shiken to him?
A: No.
O-Shiken is played "after an action resolves," which means it must be used after immediate effects resolve. Destruction is a delayed effect.
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_R#Resolve: "(An action) stops resolving when its sequence of effect activation has ended, even if the application of some effects has been delayed." Zen Faulkes, "Daizu, seiden sanzo and o-shiken", 10 Mar 2008 - Q: If during a battle that Hida Daizu (basic) is atacking one of my provinces I use Furious Assault with one of my personalities on him and my oponent chooses not to move him home. Later on that same batlle my army win and Daizu is killed on resolution, when he comes back into play by his trait will Furious Assault kill him since he stayed on the battle?
A: Order of battles (http://rules.l5r.com/Battles) goes:
Combat Segment. Furious Assault kills things here.
Resolution Segment. Being on the losing side kills things here. Effects that try to kill things in the Combat Segment, like Furious Assault, don't kill things here. Zen Faulkes, "Hida Daizu (basic) and Furious Assault", 23 Nov 2007 - Q: If I use 2 Seiden Sanzos on Hida Daizu, will he live through the start of my dynasty phase or not?
A: Not. Each destruction effect is separate. Zen Faulkes, "Seiden Sanzo and Hida Daizu", 17 Jul 2007 - Q: Seiden Sanzo has the following limited action:
Limited: Target a personality. He gains Cavalry and +3F. Destroy him at the end of this turn.
I target Hida Daizu (basic) with the above ability from two separate Seiden Sanzo's.
Since:
A) The destructions occur at the same trigger
B) Daizu's trait occurs after he is destroyed
Can I:
Resolve the destructions from Seiden Sanzo first and THEN trigger Daizu's trait (on the final destruction effect)?
Thanks!
A: The first destruction effect will trigger, Daizu dies, returns via trait, second destruction effect triggers, Daizu dies again.
Or, if you choose not to use Daizu's trait after the first destruction, the second destruction would be negated, and there would be no destruction to trigger his trait. Chris Fuchs, "Multiple Seiden Sanzo and Hida Daizu (basic)", 28 Jun 2007 - Q: Does Naseru's Funeral give an additional cost to Hida Daizu basic after the first time he dies?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Naseru's Funeral Vrs. Hida Daizu (basic)", 25 May 2007 - Q: If a Gozoku-locked Hida Daizu is destroyed, in what condition does he return to play? Is he still bowed or not, and is the 'may not straighten' clause of Gozoku sensei still in effect?
Similar question applies to a Gozoku-locked personality who Feigns Death.
A: Leaving play does not automatically end on-going effects on cards. You need some sort of text that negates the effect or ends its duration.
Daizu dying and entering play anew doesn't negate the effect of Gozoku Sensei nor cause it to expire.
He still can't unbow - but note that being unable to unbow is not the same thing is being unable to enter play unbowed. Martin Lund, "Hida Daizu and Gozoku", 11 Apr 2005 - Q: Let's say I've got a Political Adjunct (+1/+1) attached to Hida Daizu (4/4) in the current battle, this means that Daizu is now a 5/5 personality. What happens if I play Heart of Rokugan? Because HoR gives both Human Personalities and Human Followers +1 force, does the +1 force given to the Adjunct then transfer over to Daizu who also received the force bonus - thus effectively making Daizu a 7/5?
A: Yes. +F Followers are very effective that way. Zen Faulkes, "Followers with +1 and receiving force bonuses", 14 Mar 2005
