Rules Q&A
- Q: Hida Daizu (Experienced) has used his reaction last turn and is now on 2 Chi. If I attach Gift Armor (or another item which negates chi penalties) and next action share the armor to another personality, is Daizu's chi back to his base chi or does he still have the -2 chi penalty?
[Mod edit: Abbreviations removed. -ZF]
A: After removing the Gift Armor, Daizu's Chi penalty from before attaching it would still be gone.
His permanent penalty is ongoing. Gift Armor's negation is continuous.
http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_of_negation_effects: "Continuous negation effects (such as the non-triggered trait “This card can not gain Force bonuses” on a card in play) negate all relevant instantaneous, ongoing and continuous effects while the negation effect applies. If such an effect ceases to apply, ongoing effects do not reassert themselves, but continuous effects do." Brook Cunningham, "Hida Daizu (Experienced) and Gift Armor", 17 Dec 2008 - Q: "Maho Reaction: After you attach an Item, give Keitaro a -1C Corruption token: Draw a card."
So, giving Keitaro the -1C Corruption token is clearly in the constraints block, and is therefore a cost.
Now, if Keitaro has some effect on him (such as an attached item, etc), that negates chi penalties, when using his reaction, does the penalty negation cause the cost to not be paid in full (for example, Hida Daizu with such an item, trying not to die failing because he cannot fully give himself -2C), or is the cost simple giving him the token, which then causes the chi penalty, which is then negated?
We've been playing it as the -1C "effect" of the token is still part of the cost of his reaction, but it's recently been argued that giving the token is the totality of the cost, even though the chi penalty may be negated. In which case, the cost will always be paid in full (barring some effect preventing him from receiving tokens), regardles of whether or not he can actually receive a chi penalty.
A: The cost is to give Keitaro a token. If that is done, the cost is paid. Whether or not the token has any effect is irrelevant. Alex Jones, "Asahina Keitaro and tokens as a cost", 17 Jun 2008 - Q: Hida Daizu: Is this a reaction or a trait?
A: It's a trait. In particular, it's a triggered trait.
If it was a Reaction, it would say "Reaction:" in front of it.
You can see more about traits here: http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Traits
And more on abilities here just underneath: http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Abilities Zen Faulkes, "Hida Daizu", 20 Apr 2008 - Q: Is this a reaction or a trait? Can you choose when you want to bring him back or is that right away? I am confused here.
A: It is a type of trait called a "triggered trait" (http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Traits).
Pertinent to your question is this part of the section I linked:
"Effects of triggered traits are not optional – they must happen if the trigger occurs."
Because I know you're new, and please don't take this as sarcastic condescention: Have you seen the Samurai Edition Comprehensive Rules? It's a dauntingly large document, but highly useful. Brook Cunningham, "Hida Daizu", 20 Apr 2008 - Q: Continuous negation effects (such as the non-triggered trait “This card can not gain Force bonuses” on a card in play) negate all relevant instantaneous, ongoing and continuous effects while the negation effect applies. If such an effect ceases to apply, ongoing effects do not reassert themselves, but continuous effects do.
A: Daizu's -2C penalty is an ongoing effect, and does not reassert itself. Martin Lund, "Hida Daizu exp, Resilient Naginata (Different question)", 3 Mar 2008 - Q: Hello, I had a little debate with a friend on these two brand new Honors Veil's items.
They both say "Negate all Chi penalties on this Personality.", I was wondering if Hida Daizu exp could use his ability with one of these items (considering he is unbowed and at the same location of the personality being destroyed), and if he could use it, if the action effect is negated because of his cost's negation.
Thanks

A: No, he may not. If the cost is negated, then the cost is not paid.
This is nearly identical to the question about Bayushi Tomo and her chi reduction being negated, see Marty Lund's response here. Doruk Özaydın, "Hida Daizu exp and Resilient Naginata/Gift Armor", 28 Feb 2008 - Q: If during a battle that Hida Daizu (basic) is atacking one of my provinces I use Furious Assault with one of my personalities on him and my oponent chooses not to move him home. Later on that same batlle my army win and Daizu is killed on resolution, when he comes back into play by his trait will Furious Assault kill him since he stayed on the battle?
A: Order of battles (http://rules.l5r.com/Battles) goes:
Combat Segment. Furious Assault kills things here.
Resolution Segment. Being on the losing side kills things here. Effects that try to kill things in the Combat Segment, like Furious Assault, don't kill things here. Zen Faulkes, "Hida Daizu (basic) and Furious Assault", 23 Nov 2007 - Q: My opponent tries to destroy one of my Personalities, but I use Razor of the Dawn Castle to delay the destruction until the end of the turn. Am I right in thinking I can use my Hida Daizu Experienced to negate the destruction at the end of the turn?
A: Yes. The source of the destruction has not changed. It also doesn't specify anything like "after resolution." Zen Faulkes, "Hida Daizu Experienced vs. delay effects", 12 Oct 2007 - Q: Mirumoto Kei (Experienced) uses her ability and challenges Hida Daizu (Experienced). Daizu loses. Can Daizu use his reaction to prevent his death?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Mirumoto Kei (Experienced) and Hida Daizu (Experienced)", 11 Aug 2007 - Q: (C)ould I, as the active player, choose to have the first Seiden Sanzo destroy Daizu, then have the second Seiden Sanzo destroy him again (while he's still dead), and then have his trait trigger and bring him back into play?
A: No. One destruction effect occurs. Daizu's trait resolves before the next identical effect resolves. Zen Faulkes, "Seiden Sanzo and Hida Daizu Again", 18 Jul 2007 - Q: If I use 2 Seiden Sanzos on Hida Daizu, will he live through the start of my dynasty phase or not?
A: Not. Each destruction effect is separate. Zen Faulkes, "Seiden Sanzo and Hida Daizu", 17 Jul 2007 - Q: Seiden Sanzo has the following limited action:
Limited: Target a personality. He gains Cavalry and +3F. Destroy him at the end of this turn.
I target Hida Daizu (basic) with the above ability from two separate Seiden Sanzo's.
Since:
A) The destructions occur at the same trigger
B) Daizu's trait occurs after he is destroyed
Can I:
Resolve the destructions from Seiden Sanzo first and THEN trigger Daizu's trait (on the final destruction effect)?
Thanks!
A: The first destruction effect will trigger, Daizu dies, returns via trait, second destruction effect triggers, Daizu dies again.
Or, if you choose not to use Daizu's trait after the first destruction, the second destruction would be negated, and there would be no destruction to trigger his trait. Chris Fuchs, "Multiple Seiden Sanzo and Hida Daizu (basic)", 28 Jun 2007 - Q: Does Naseru's Funeral give an additional cost to Hida Daizu basic after the first time he dies?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Naseru's Funeral Vrs. Hida Daizu (basic)", 25 May 2007
