- Erratum: Reads, "Hida Kosho 5F/3C 5HR 10G 3PH Crab Clan Samurai. Yu 5. Battle: Once per battle, Kosho challenges an opposing attacking Personality to a duel of Force. The challenged Personality may refuse by going home bowed. Bow the loser." [MRP, Diamond Edition, 27 October 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 99
- Going home bowed is an effect of the action. A Test of Courage may be played in response. [JA, 3 June 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 99
- Q: Can Hida Kosho challenge an attacking Personality when Kosho is in my home? He doesn't say "opposing". A: You're right, he doesn't say "opposing", and because of that, he can challenge an attacker in the current battle from your home or from a different battle, and if Kosho is in the current battle, he can challenge an attacker in a different one. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, May 21, 2003, p. 8
Rules Q&A
- Q: If I have someone at the battle, does Hida Kosho have to be at the battle to use his ability?
A: From the FAQ at http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/ccg/faq.html :
] Q: Can Hida Kosho challenge an attacking Personality when Kosho ] is in my home? He doesn't say "opposing". ] ] A: You're right, he doesn't say "opposing", and because of ] that, he can challenge an attacker in the current battle from ] your home or from a different battle, and if Kosho is in the ] current battle, he can challenge an attacker in a different ] one. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 May 2003", 21 May 2003 - Q: Recently, I played a game of l5r where my opponent used Hida Kosho's ability to challenge one of my personalities. I responded by accepting and focusing Another Time, thus canceling the duel. My opponent held that since the duel had been canceled, Kosho could perform the action again. I am not sure if this is correct; is canceling the duel synonomous with canceling the entire action?
A: No. Another Time shouldn't use the word "cancel" -- that's an improper use of the term. Another Time ends the duel immediately, without resolution. Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 November 2002", 21 Nov 2002 - Q: Situation:
Kisada Shrine bowed, Hida Kosho (or other peep with YU) dishonored with Chukandomo.
Straighten fase: Straighten your Stronghold and all of your cards in play. Q: May I straight the shrine (first), destroy Kosho instead of straightening him (see chukandomo) (second) and use Kisada Shrine to return Kosho to play, bowed, in my home?
A: It really doesn't matter. Even if you straighten everything simultaneously, Kisada's Shrine is used after Kosho dies, so it would straighten and Kosho would die at the same time, then you could use the Shrine. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 November 2002", 5 Nov 2002 - Q: Hida Kosho: Crab Clan Samurai Yu 5 Battle: Once per battle, challenge an attacking Personality to a duel of Force. The challenged Personality may refuse by going home bowed. Bow the loser.
A Test of Courage: Reaction: Play this card when an action is moving one of your target Personalities out of battle. Cancel the action. You cannot bow the Personality to take actions or target the Personality with actions until after the turn.
So can I refuse the challenge, which sends me home then play ëA Test of Courageí to cancel me being sent home?
A: My initial take on this issue is that, as worded, going home is a cost, not an effect. Only the effects of an action are what it "does", so Kosho's action isn't moving your Personality from the battle. But I'll see what the Rules Team has to say. Jeff Alexander, "post for 31 May 2002", 1 Jun 2002 - Q: B) May I use Hida Kosho (challenge an attacking pers.) if hi is at home or in other battle (I have another personality in this battle) ?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 May 2002", 7 May 2002 - Q: 11.) We had an discussion about this at the pre-release: Hida Kosho does not specify an "opposing" unit but merely an "attacking" one. Does that mean he doesn't have to be in the battle to initiate his duel, so long as you have a unit there to satisfy the rule of Presence?
A: That is correct. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 April 2002", 9 Apr 2002 - Q: (Hida Kosho's) action is to force duel, refusable by the other guy going home bow. Can my opponent use the righthand to stop the movement? Is the character then bowed anyways?
A: Yes. No (Web of Lies rulesheet, top of second column). Zen Faulkes, "Hida Kosho", 25 Mar 2005
