Rules Q&A
- Q: [3]. Opposing Player
Can I use the Hida Kuon exp 3 ability in a battle in which there is no units opposing him? What "opposing player" means?
A: "An opposing player" in this context means any other player who controls cards opposing your own cards in battle. If there are no cards in the opposing army, then no one qualifies as "an opposing player."
Meanwhile, "the opposing player," is old template that has been replaced by, "the enemy leader," on newer cards. It means the Defender if you are the Attacker or an Attacking Ally; and it means the Attacker if you are the Defender or Defending Ally. This status is true during an Attack even when there are no armies at a battle. Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 December 2004", 13 Dec 2004 - Q: When I search my deck for a specific card (EG with Boundless Sight), can I voluntarily fail to find a card? (EG Hida Kuon is the only guy left and I don't have his honour requirement this turn).
From the Rules for 8 March 2004, Jeff said:
A: "> Any card that says 'Search your deck': Martin Lund, "Rules for 6 October 2004", 11 Oct 2004 - Q: My follow-on question is on what keeps a theoretically infinite RA from being declared as the last RA from Kuro's. Because we now know that the upper bound of KF is violatable, what keeps Agasha Seruma with Kuro's Fire from killing Hida Kuon by declaring a RA10, letting it resolve, then end the KF effect by having gone over the limit?
A: If nothing known is going to reduce it into a legal range, you can't declare it that big to begin with. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 8 March 2004", 9 Mar 2004 - Q: OK this came up in a game a few nights ago. If Ninja Shapeshifter copies Hida Wukau (Experienced) Ability and uses it on say Hida Kuon does it last until The ninja shapeshifter uses it again or does it fall into the "May remained Bowed" Catagory on PG68?
A: It falls into the latter category. It ends when the ability disappears. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 1 March 2004", 2 Mar 2004 - Q: Hello,
If I begin an attack phase, and I assign Hida Kuon to province A, while my opponent assigns a defender to province B. If I resolve Kuon's battle, take the province and then march beyond death him to province C and take that province, when resolving province B battle, would I be able to Will him into that battle as well?
A: Yes.
The rule only prohibits movement of someone who has been in battle resolution as the Attacker to another battlefield in the same phase.
You may indeed use Will in the manner you specified, assuming you also have presence at Province B. Dan Jacobson, "will vs second battle move in", 16 May 2010 - Q: If I attack with Hida Kuon and the enemy player has 2 Personalities with 4 force each and I kill the 1st with Kami Unleashed, bowing Kuon. He passes on his next action. Can I use Final Duty to kill the remain personality with the ranged 6 attack since Kuon is bowed and no longer giving force to the battle.
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_F#Force_total: "(A)n army's Force total is the sum of the Force of all unbowed Personalities and Followers in the army."
Yes.
(I'm assuming this is about the Exp. 6 Kuon. Although not relevant to this question, I'll take a second to remind people to mention Experience levels in questions. Thanks.) Zen Faulkes, "Final Duty/Army total force?", 26 Jul 2009 - Q: I play a flanked by nightmares on Hida Kuon who is alone and my Crab opponent plays an anti kill effect on my flanked by nightmares and his Kuon is still alive (see Strength of the Bamboo, Does not die so easily!, will). At this point is Kuon's trait still active, or has the flanked by nightmares targetting (even if death is negated) counted as the first action.
A: Negating one effect does not mean the targeting never took place. Kuon's trait (note: not ability) will ignore all later actions of the enemy leader that target him. Zen Faulkes, "Hida Kuon (Experienced 6): The compilation", 9 Jul 2009 - Q: I buy Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced, and target a Personality (say, Hida Kuon) in play. I then overlay onto him Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced 2. As long as Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced 2 remains in play and unbowed, will Kuon's controller be able to assign or move him to battles?
A: It's an ongoing effect. http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_of_effects: "Ongoing effects do not end if the card they came from leaves play." Tentatively, I think a logical extension from that is that ongoing effects do not end if card text is removed. The effect has resolved and the conditions for ending it have not changed. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui exp, Tsuruchi Etsui exp2", 21 Dec 2007 - Q: Hi!
Regarding this:
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=61970
Could you please clarify? To whose action are you pertaining? To the Seat of Power or (let's say the action whose target being changed is) Hired Killer?
Isn't the action (if the target is being changed) on the control of the one taking the action? That is;
A) I Hired Killer Hida Kuon B) Player B plays Seat of Power and activates the redirection C) (Please clarify if this is correct) Since I'm the one originally playing Hired Killer, and Seat of Power states that I'll have to choose another target, this just means that I can choose any personality with the exception of Hida Kuon?
Thanks!
A: The person taking the action on seat of power chooses the new target. Chris Fuchs, "RE: Seat of Power", 24 Sep 2007 - Q: 2nd question:
I wanted to come on the Determination vs Determination subject.
If I target Hida Kuon with Hired Killer and target one of my samurai to play Determination on the Hired Killer, can my opponent play Determination on Seat of Power's reaction to be able to redirect the Hired Killer even if Determination has been played on it ? Which Determination would beat the other ?
A: I would be inclined to say the last one to be played would "trump" the other, but I'll forward it up to the entire Rules Team proper to give you the official word on that. Martin Lund, "Misdirection and "up to"/ Determination vs Determination", 30 Jul 2007
