Rules Q&A
- Q: When I search my deck for a specific card (EG with Boundless Sight), can I voluntarily fail to find a card? (EG Hida Kuon is the only guy left and I don't have his honour requirement this turn).
From the Rules for 8 March 2004, Jeff said:
A: "> Any card that says 'Search your deck': Martin Lund, "Rules for 6 October 2004", 11 Oct 2004 - Q: My follow-on question is on what keeps a theoretically infinite RA from being declared as the last RA from Kuro's. Because we now know that the upper bound of KF is violatable, what keeps Agasha Seruma with Kuro's Fire from killing Hida Kuon by declaring a RA10, letting it resolve, then end the KF effect by having gone over the limit?
A: If nothing known is going to reduce it into a legal range, you can't declare it that big to begin with. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 8 March 2004", 9 Mar 2004 - Q: OK this came up in a game a few nights ago. If Ninja Shapeshifter copies Hida Wukau (Experienced) Ability and uses it on say Hida Kuon does it last until The ninja shapeshifter uses it again or does it fall into the "May remained Bowed" Catagory on PG68?
A: It falls into the latter category. It ends when the ability disappears. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 1 March 2004", 2 Mar 2004 - Q: 1) I was in the process of overlaying Hida Kuon exp2 over Hida Kuon non-exp. Obviously, the price difference is 8. Can two Hiruma Dojos be utilized in order to reduce Hida Kuon exp2's cost by 8, and overlay him without gold cost at that point?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 May 2003", 6 May 2003 - Q: Strike of Flowing Water When you focus this card, double the Focus value of the next card you focus in this duel. Reaction: When one of your Personalities would focus, instead discard all cards focused by both Personalities'controllers for the duel and negate the discarded cards' effects.
Daidoji Megumi Upon entering a duel, Megumi gains +3C until the duel ends or either player focuses.
Now, say Megumi is dueling, oh, Hida Kuon. I challenge Kuon with Megumi, we're both at 2 Chi, except as we enter the duel Megumi jumps to five. Kuon focuses and Megumi's Chi drops back to two. I play Strike of Flowing Water to discard Kuon's focused card and negate its effects. Since the focuses have been negated, does that mean Megumi's Chi goes back up to 5?
A: No. Her bonus ended when Kuon focussed. Furthermore, Strike of Flowing Water only discards the cards that have been focussed. It does not undo the fact that a focus was done. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 October 2001", 17 Oct 2001 - Q: If Akasha I. Challenges Hida Kuon (PH1), who refuses and commits seppuku, and Ide Michisuna reacts, does the Crab player lose 2 honor or 8? In other words, since Michsuna "negates the re-honoring", is he also negating the ability to reduce the honor loss from 7 to 1?
2. Only the restoration to honor is negated. The reduction of the loss from 7 to 1 still happens.
You might want to think about that one... From Zen's archive:
Iaijutsu Challenge * Reads, "Iaijutsu Challenge 0G 2FV Limited: One of your Personalities challenges a Personality. If the challenged Personality's controller refuses the challenge, he or she loses 7 Honor and this card dishonors the Personality." etc
The honour loss occurs before Hida Kuon is dishonored, so if Kuon commits seppuku in response to the honour loss, he isn't dishonored, and Ide Michisuna has nothing to react to.
A: Interesting. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 October 2001", 17 Oct 2001 - Q: If Akasha I. A: 2. Only the restoration to honor is negated. The reduction of the loss from 7 to 1 still happens. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 October 2001", 16 Oct 2001 - Q: I buy Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced, and target a Personality (say, Hida Kuon) in play. I then overlay onto him Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced 2. As long as Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced 2 remains in play and unbowed, will Kuon's controller be able to assign or move him to battles?
A: It's an ongoing effect. http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_of_effects: "Ongoing effects do not end if the card they came from leaves play." Tentatively, I think a logical extension from that is that ongoing effects do not end if card text is removed. The effect has resolved and the conditions for ending it have not changed. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui exp, Tsuruchi Etsui exp2", 21 Dec 2007 - Q: Hi!
Regarding this:
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=61970
Could you please clarify? To whose action are you pertaining? To the Seat of Power or (let's say the action whose target being changed is) Hired Killer?
Isn't the action (if the target is being changed) on the control of the one taking the action? That is;
A) I Hired Killer Hida Kuon B) Player B plays Seat of Power and activates the redirection C) (Please clarify if this is correct) Since I'm the one originally playing Hired Killer, and Seat of Power states that I'll have to choose another target, this just means that I can choose any personality with the exception of Hida Kuon?
Thanks!
A: The person taking the action on seat of power chooses the new target. Chris Fuchs, "RE: Seat of Power", 24 Sep 2007 - Q: 2nd question:
I wanted to come on the Determination vs Determination subject.
If I target Hida Kuon with Hired Killer and target one of my samurai to play Determination on the Hired Killer, can my opponent play Determination on Seat of Power's reaction to be able to redirect the Hired Killer even if Determination has been played on it ? Which Determination would beat the other ?
A: I would be inclined to say the last one to be played would "trump" the other, but I'll forward it up to the entire Rules Team proper to give you the official word on that. Martin Lund, "Misdirection and "up to"/ Determination vs Determination", 30 Jul 2007
