Rules Q&A
- Q: I can't answer in my last topic so here again. If I have for example 5 personalities in my deck: 3x Hida Kuon 1x Hida Kuon exp 1x Hida Kuon exp2
Can I have all of them on the table?
A: Quotes in italics, below, are from Experienced.
Even though Hida Kuon experienced and Hida Kuon experienced 2 are both Unique, because they have different experience levels, they may be included in the same deck. Even if they are Unique, Experienced cards with the same title but different experience levels may be included in the same deck.
However, because they are Unique, they may not both be in play at the same time. Unique Experienced cards still follow the rules for entering play that apply to Unique cards.
If Hida Kuon exp is in play, the only way to bring Hida Kuon exp2 into play is by overlaying Hida Kuon exp. During the Dynasty Phase, if an Experienced Personality is face-up in one of the active player's Provinces, it can overlay a less experienced Personality with the same title controlled by the active player.
If Hida Kuon2 exp is in play, you may not bring Hida Kuon exp into play even by overlaying a Hida Kuon nonexp. A Unique card can not overlay another card if there is a third card in play that is a Unique version of the overlaying card.
You can have all your Hida Kuons on the table, but only up to four Hida Kuons in play: the experienced Hida Kuons must be in an overlay stack, of which only the topmost card is in play. Alex Jones, "Number of personalities II", 8 Jul 2008 - Q: I buy Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced, and target a Personality (say, Hida Kuon) in play. I then overlay onto him Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced 2. As long as Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced 2 remains in play and unbowed, will Kuon's controller be able to assign or move him to battles?
A: It's an ongoing effect. http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_of_effects: "Ongoing effects do not end if the card they came from leaves play." Tentatively, I think a logical extension from that is that ongoing effects do not end if card text is removed. The effect has resolved and the conditions for ending it have not changed. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui exp, Tsuruchi Etsui exp2", 21 Dec 2007 - Q: Hi!
Regarding this:
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=61970
Could you please clarify? To whose action are you pertaining? To the Seat of Power or (let's say the action whose target being changed is) Hired Killer?
Isn't the action (if the target is being changed) on the control of the one taking the action? That is;
A) I Hired Killer Hida Kuon B) Player B plays Seat of Power and activates the redirection C) (Please clarify if this is correct) Since I'm the one originally playing Hired Killer, and Seat of Power states that I'll have to choose another target, this just means that I can choose any personality with the exception of Hida Kuon?
Thanks!
A: The person taking the action on seat of power chooses the new target. Chris Fuchs, "RE: Seat of Power", 24 Sep 2007 - Q: 2nd question:
I wanted to come on the Determination vs Determination subject.
If I target Hida Kuon with Hired Killer and target one of my samurai to play Determination on the Hired Killer, can my opponent play Determination on Seat of Power's reaction to be able to redirect the Hired Killer even if Determination has been played on it ? Which Determination would beat the other ?
A: I would be inclined to say the last one to be played would "trump" the other, but I'll forward it up to the entire Rules Team proper to give you the official word on that. Martin Lund, "Misdirection and "up to"/ Determination vs Determination", 30 Jul 2007 - Q: In multiplayer games, can certain 'harpoon' techniques be used to move other players' units into your side of the battle thus forcing them to be allies if they were otherwise uninvolved?
It sounds like from the rules for allying, as long as a player is 'invited' by an attacker or defender they can, at any time, move into the battle. "The first time Each Attack phase a player has any units on one side of a battlefield, he or she becomes the inviting player's ally."
So, in the following situation:
I'm playing Mantis in multiplayer with a Crab and a Crane player. I attack the Crane, and offer the Crab an invite to help attack. The Crab declines. The Crane offers the Crab to help defend, and again the Crab declines. I assign my units, the Crane assigns her. Now can I, using Yoritomo Naizen's 'harpoon' ability move the Crab player's Hida Kuon into Naizen's battle on my side, thus making the Crab player my ally? Or vice versa, forcing him to be the Crane player's if I so choose?
Thanks.
A: Man, there isn't an Multiplayer entry for the Rules Wiki yet.
I dug around in the Samurai Edition Preview Rulebook to see if I could sniff up at least a clue.
It doesn't say a whole lot, so I'm going to wing it here. If he's invite by both sides, you can send his man into either side's army, at which point he becomes an ally of that side. It really doesn't specify which army, and it is your ability, after all, so you can make the choice. It keeps things simple.
Just remember that once he's allied, you can't send any of his units into the other army.
Happy multi-player gaming! Martin Lund, "Harpooning and Allying", 23 Jul 2007 - Q: Can my opponent choose to bow Hida Kuon (Experienced 4)(?)
A: Rules Archive, Decisions: "A player may choose an option for which all effects will be negated." Zen Faulkes, "Hida Kuon Exp. 4 vs. Broken Lines", 1 Jun 2007 - Q: Do I get to discard a card in the process of playing Broken Lines since it will affect Kuon?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Hida Kuon Exp. 4 vs. Broken Lines", 1 Jun 2007 - Q: Can Tiger´s Mouth bow Hida Kuon (Experienced 4) if he performs an action targeting the personalities who belong to the player who played Tiger´s Mouth?
A: Tiger's Mouth creates an additional cost. The Experienced 4 Kuon's trait does not concern costs (it only cares about "Other players' card effects"), so you must meet the additional cost of the action.
To put it another way: Tiger's Mouth doesn't bow cards. It increases costs. Zen Faulkes, "Tiger´s Mouth and Hida Kuon", 8 Nov 2006
