Rules Q&A
- Q: Do I need another personality to use Hida Kuon xp 5's unbow ability? Or can I use it even if Kuon is my only personality in play.
Hida Kuon xp5 ability: Battle/Open : Even if Kuon is bowed: Straighten Kuon and another Crab Clan Personality at Kuon's location.
A: You need another personality. See Conjunctions:
The phrase "a [keyword 1] and a [keyword 2]" refers to two different cards, each with the relevant keyword. Example: "Bow a Samurai and a Courtier" is not fulfilled by bowing a single card with both Samurai and Courtier as keywords. Alex Jones, "Hida Kuon xp 5", 13 Jul 2008 - Q: I have Hida Kuon Exp 5 at one province, and my oponent assigns the Fire Dragon to a different province. He then proceeds to resolve Hida Kuon's battle first. Then he resolves the Fire Dragon's battle. Can I play Reinforce the Gates to move him to Hida Kuon's already resolved battle?
A: I'm assuming the player with the Fire Dragon is the attacker in this scenario. Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates and resolved battles", 1 Feb 2008 - Q: I buy Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced, and target a Personality (say, Hida Kuon) in play. I then overlay onto him Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced 2. As long as Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced 2 remains in play and unbowed, will Kuon's controller be able to assign or move him to battles?
A: It's an ongoing effect. http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_of_effects: "Ongoing effects do not end if the card they came from leaves play." Tentatively, I think a logical extension from that is that ongoing effects do not end if card text is removed. The effect has resolved and the conditions for ending it have not changed. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui exp, Tsuruchi Etsui exp2", 21 Dec 2007 - Q: Say a Personality has an effect on it that gives it a positive minimum Chi (either a Clan armor, or a Crab with Hida Kuon XP5 in the same location - possibly Kuon himself).
If I give the Personality with an action (say, Kyuden Wasuremono's ability) that would be enough to bring him to 0C if it were not for the minimum Chi, and use Determination when I announce the action, does the Personality die for having 0 Chi?
A: Minimum and Maximums do not Negate anything. They cause you to treat a stat as a value it would otherwise not be calculated to. Determination has no effect on them. Martin Lund, "Determination and Chi death vs minimum Chi", 2 Nov 2007 - Q: Hi!
Regarding this:
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=61970
Could you please clarify? To whose action are you pertaining? To the Seat of Power or (let's say the action whose target being changed is) Hired Killer?
Isn't the action (if the target is being changed) on the control of the one taking the action? That is;
A) I Hired Killer Hida Kuon B) Player B plays Seat of Power and activates the redirection C) (Please clarify if this is correct) Since I'm the one originally playing Hired Killer, and Seat of Power states that I'll have to choose another target, this just means that I can choose any personality with the exception of Hida Kuon?
Thanks!
A: The person taking the action on seat of power chooses the new target. Chris Fuchs, "RE: Seat of Power", 24 Sep 2007 - Q: 2nd question:
I wanted to come on the Determination vs Determination subject.
If I target Hida Kuon with Hired Killer and target one of my samurai to play Determination on the Hired Killer, can my opponent play Determination on Seat of Power's reaction to be able to redirect the Hired Killer even if Determination has been played on it ? Which Determination would beat the other ?
A: I would be inclined to say the last one to be played would "trump" the other, but I'll forward it up to the entire Rules Team proper to give you the official word on that. Martin Lund, "Misdirection and "up to"/ Determination vs Determination", 30 Jul 2007
