Rules Q&A
- Q: When would he target Akuma no Oni?
A: During the resolution of Pinned Down's action, well before you select your Personality for your Terrain's delayed effect.
EDIT: Also, as a clarification, he is not targeting Akuma but rather "choosing" him; slightly different. Brook Cunningham, "Deployed Reinforcements and Pinned Down", 30 Aug 2011 - Q: If he is required to target Akuma no Oni before it comes time for me to select a unit to move, would I be able to select a different unit instead?
A: Yes. Brook Cunningham, "Deployed Reinforcements and Pinned Down", 30 Aug 2011 - Q: Akuma no Oni xp2 has as text:
Text Shadowlands • Nonhuman • Oni • Overlord • Experienced 2 Oni no Akuma • Unique After Akuma enters play: Lose 15 Honor and destroy your rightmost province. During the Action Phase, Akuma does not bow and may not be targeted. Once per game, after a battle's resolution in which an attacking army containing Akuma destroyed a province: Destroy another of the Defender’s Provinces.
Never stand alone has two abilities, each of which target during the Action phase: Text Open: Remove a target Personality in a discard pile from the game. Limited: Target a discarded (not dead) Personality you own. Put the Personality face-up in one of your provinces, discarding a card from it if necessary.
BUT, Akuma isn't "in play," but he IS face up, so is using either ability legal?
A: Akuma no Oni exp2 may not be targeted by either ability on Never Stand Alone, since its trait is active in the discard pile.
See Implications of in and out of play: Cards that are not in play or in a resolution, entering-play or focusing area have the following limitations: * Their continuous traits do not produce effects. EXCEPTION: Continuous effects on cards out of play affect only the card itself. Alex Jones, "Akuma no Oni vs. Never Stand Alone", 25 Mar 2010 - Q: If a player brings Akuma no Oni (Exp. 2) into play from his rightmost province, does it refill before being destroyed?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Areas_of_the_ga ... of_play.29: "When a card leaves a province and the province then holds fewer than its maximum number of cards, effects triggered by the card... entering play resolve first(.) Then, if the Province still holds fewer than its maximum number of cards, it is refilled with a face-down Dynasty card from the top of the Province’s owner’s deck(.)"
Akuma no Oni's trait triggers "After Akuma enter play."
No refilling before Province destruction. Zen Faulkes, "Akuma no Oni out of the rightmost province", 3 Sep 2009 - Q: If a player who has Akuma no Oni xp2 in one of their provinces while Decree of Peace is in effect, would using Unexpected Arrival to bring Akuma into play as the attack trigger the event's province destruction due to Akuma's province-destruction cost occuring while "as an Attacker"?
A: No. A player is not destroying the Province; Akuma no Oni's trait is destroying the Province. Zen Faulkes, "Akuma no Oni xp2 / Unexpected Arrival / Decree of Peace", 5 Aug 2009 - Q: Can I target Akuma no Oni Exp 2 with the action from The Maw's Grave while he is dead and in discard?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Continuous_traits: "While their card is out of play, continuous traits affect the card they are on(.)" Zen Faulkes, "Akuma no Oni and The Maw's Grave", 11 Apr 2009 - Q: Just for official confirmation, this (supply outpost + phial of poison) also removes any "Lose X honor" or other 'entering play' traits on personalities before they are considered to enter play, correct?
A: Well, it is technically AFTER they've entered play, not before.
But, the answer is still "Yes" to this:
Supply Outpost's delayed effect will always occur before triggered traits. So, if you use it to attach a Phial of Poison, you will remove all a Personality's traits (in Akuma no Oni's case, his triggered Honor Loss, his triggered province destruction, his triggered double-province kill, AND his bowing and targeting restrictions) before they can trigger. So, the ones triggered after entering play won't, as per:
http://rules.l5r.com/Timing: "The order of resolution means that effects that come first, due to the above order or the active player’s decision, can negate, alter or render irrelevant effects that come later." Brook Cunningham, "Akuma no Oni, Phial of Poison and Supply Outpost", 11 Oct 2008 - Q: If I have Supply Outpost (unbowed and in play), and desire to buy Akuma no Oni from one of my provinces and have Phial of Poison in my hand, can I bring in Akuma no Oni and choose the order of the triggered traits such that I trigger the supply outpost first attach phial of poison to Akuma no Oni?
A: No. Supply Outpost's attachment effect is a delayed effect, not a triggered trait. You cannot choose the order because a delayed effect ALWAYS occurs before a triggered trait (Citation). Brook Cunningham, "Akuma no Oni, Phial of Poison and Supply Outpost", 10 Oct 2008 - Q: ...my question is what happens now? Do i still lose a province due to Akuma no Oni's trait since I choose to resolve the trait after the supply outpost or does the trait get negated by the phial of poison? Thanks.
A: Again, you're not choosing between Akuma's trait and the Outpost's effect; the latter will always occur first. But, if you do choose to attach Phial of Poison (you could choose to attach something different or nothing at all, due to Supply Outpost's "may" wording), then Akuma's traits would be removed before they could trigger, and your Province would be saved. Brook Cunningham, "Akuma no Oni, Phial of Poison and Supply Outpost", 10 Oct 2008 - Q: Can Akuma no Oni XP2 attach the follower Oni Horde during the action phase?\
Thank you.
A: No, sorry.
Oni Horde's trait isn't broad enough; it only gets around restrictions on an effect that would attach it (i.e. from a trait like "Will not attach cards."). Akuma's trait restricts targeting him in the first place. Brook Cunningham, "Akuma + horde", 20 Sep 2008 - Q: In regards to this: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=60021
It implies that the Battle fought through Ambush is conducted outside of the Action Phase, thus allowing Akuma to be targeted during an Ambush.
The ruling here seems to imply otherwise. viewtopic.php?f=59&t=60036
Am I misunderstanding one or both rulings, or is there a conflict between them? Can Akuma be targeted during an Ambush or is it still the Action Phase, thus making him immune?
A: Mine only addresses the question of whether Ambush is Action Phase or not; it says nothing about Akuma. Zen Faulkes, "Akuma no Oni experienced 2 (Re: Ambush)", 4 Aug 2007 - Q: Regarding Zen's comments here:
The example seems like a bad one, since Akuma no Oni [exp2], the one that's SE legal (the current one being Oni no Akuma exp2), does not say its honor loss cannot be negated, and neither is a Fate or Spider Clan card.
(I'm commenting this here 'cause such a comment, in a stickied thread, seems sure to create some confusion)
A: Example removed. Zen Faulkes, "Spider and Akuma under SE rules", 28 Jun 2007 - Q: Forgive me if this was answered on another thread. I was just sorting my cards into Samurai Legal and other. I've got a sickhouse Shadowlands personality named Oni no Akuma (exp2). On the list is a personality named Akuma no Oni (exp2). Are they, in fact, the same oni?

A: You can't really tell without the art, because you have to count the number of tongues.
Time to put up an announcement...
