Rules Q&A
- Q: If you play a card, and for some reason that card returns to your hand or leaves visible play during that turn, abilities on it actually work again, as the game doesn't remember which card/action was played.
A: Yes, but the rule (http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Tracking_rule) doesn't talk about sources of effects being forgotten.
The question, "Did this ability generate tokens?" may not give the same answer as, "How did this token get generated?" Zen Faulkes, "Hida Sozen xp2 + -Chi tokens", 16 Mar 2009 - Q: If, however, Muketsu were to give Sozen a total of 2 -2C tokens (therefore putting him on 0 Chi), and was then removed from the game, the game state "forgets" the card.
A: On what basis on you saying this? This is not a rhetorical question, I'd really like to know. Because my quick search couldn't find anything saying the source of effects is "wiped" after a card leaves play. Which would mean Hida Sozen (Experienced 2) would not be destroyed if the source of tokens leaves play or the game. Zen Faulkes, "Hida Sozen xp2 + -Chi tokens", 16 Mar 2009 - Q: scene:Hida Sozen xp2 attacks a province with sorrow's path attached. can sorrow's path destroy Hida Sozen xp2? (does sorrow's path's text make it count as an action?)
Hida Sozen xp2 Crab Clan • Samurai • Hero • Enlightened • Experienced 2 • Unique Other players' actions cannot destroy Sozen. Heroic Battle: If there are any units in the enemy army: Move Sozen to the current battlefield.
Sorrow's path Singular Before a battle at this province resolves: The Attacker targets one unit, or three cards, in the attacking army. Destroy the targets.
A: Sorrow's Path is an effect of a trait, not an action. Hida Sozen xp/xp2 still dies. Dan Jacobson, "Sozen, Sorrow's Path", 11 Mar 2009 - Q: Let´s say that I use Let them fight their dead and bring Hida Sozen XP2 to my side of the battlefield.
Will Sozen Xp2 be destroyed at the end of the battle or does his trait protect him from being destroyed (because he will be destroyed by the effects of an opponents card), and so keeping Sozen Xp2 on my side of the game permanently.
Let Them Fight Their Dead
Maho Kiho Battle: Target one of your unbowed opposed Shugenja: Target a dead Personality the enemy leader owns. Lose 5 Honor. Bring him into play, in your army, waiving costs and ignoring restrictions. After the battle ends, destroy him.
Hida Sozen Xp2
Other players' actions cannot destroy Sozen. Heroic Battle: If there are any units in the enemy army: Move Sozen to the current battlefield.
Thanks in advance
A: Special wording rules, possessive case: When referring to the relationship between a player and a card or cards, possessive terms refer to a card in play controlled by the player, or a card out of play owned by the player. You control Hida Sozen and it's your action that would destroy him after the battle, so he gets no protection.
Sozen dies. Alex Jones, "Sozen XP2 & Let them fight their dead", 13 Jan 2009 - Q: Due to a recent ruling on chi death in the case of heated discussion.
Heated discussion and chi death
More specifically the additional part added to chi death
Card features, Specific stats, Chi (added May 30th): "Ongoing and instantaneous effects that negate destruction [...] will not negate destruction from zero Chi [...] This rule also applies to effects that substitute some other effect, such as dishonoring, for destruction. [...] If the substitution comes from an ongoing or instantaneous effect, then the substitution fails.
Does this mean that hida sozen xp2 now dies due to having zero chi, because it was ruled that he did not die due to it being a ongoing negating his destruction. Which is contray to the new ruling stated above on chi death. old Hida sozen and chi death ruling
A: Hida Sozen's negation is continuous, not ongoing (Citation).
He can still stop his own death from 0 Chi brought about other players' actions. Brook Cunningham, "Hida Sozen and Chi Death", 30 May 2008 - Q: If Sozen is challenged to a duel via an action, which had Determination played on it (with it?), does his trait negate the death if he loses the duel, or does Determination allow the action created duel to kill him?
A: The latter.

Nothing special about duels in that regard. Zen Faulkes, "Hida Sozen, Determination, and duels from action cards", 5 May 2008
