Rulings
- Trait does not prevent him from being dishonored when he attaches a card with a trait that dishonors him (e.g., Blade of Penance). [ZF, 14 December 2003; JA, email, 18 December 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 100
Rules Q&A
- Q: Correct me if I'm wrong here, but a Shadowlands player cannot refuse Kakita Mai, but can refuse Iajutsu Challenge right? So if Kakita Mai uses her action to start a challenge, and the player refuses, if Kakita Mai's player plays Superior Stance, does opponent still lose the 4 honor since that honor loss has been ruled a cost of refusing?
A: Sure. The 4-point loss is a Cost of Refusing, not an Effect of Refusing. Martin Lund, "Rules for 25 June 2004", 28 Jun 2004 - Q: I remember a discussion a while back about Ashihei's Trait being able to cancel an Iajutsu Challenge, but I was just looking through the accumulated rulings
A: <SNIP> Martin Lund, "Rules for 21 June 2004", 25 Jun 2004 - Q: Can Hiruma Ashihei refuse an Iajitsu Challenge, then cancel the challenge before it dishonors him and before the player loses 7 family honor?
A: It works like this:
Resolve each effect of the Action normally, until you reach "dishonor Hiruma Ashihei." At that point, Cancel the Action. It produces no further effects, but no effects it previously resolved are undone.
In the case of Iaijutsu Challenge, you'd refuse the challenge. Then you go on to the next sentence of the card's effects: "If the challenge is refused, Iaijutsu Challenge dishonors -" CANCELED!
And that's all she wrote. No dishonoring Ashihei. No losing 7 honor. Iaijutsu Challenge is canceled.
The only way to get around this would be to actually remove Ashihei from play after he refuses but before he is dishonored. A means to this end would be challenging him with Kitsuki Iweko in response to his refusal of the challenge and cutting him down. That would invoke the whole "if the target ceases to be a legal target, the action will have no further effects on that target," rule. The Action would not be able to dishonor Ashihei so he wouldn't cancel it. The loss of 7 Honor would then go off without a hitch. Martin Lund, "Rules for 13 June 2004", 15 Jun 2004 - Q: Can I return Hiruma Ashihei to life with Feign Death or is the action canceled by his trait? If I can bring him back, is he dishonored? Do I still lose 2 honor?
A: The Action gets Canceled once it tries to resolve the effect "Dishonor Hiruma Ashihei." Do not undo any effects that have already been produced by an Action when it is Canceled. (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 72, "Canceling Actions and Negating Effects")
So you play Feign Death. You resolve the first effect - returning Ashihei into play. Move on to the next effect on the card - dishonoring Ashihei. Cancel the Action and don't dishonor Ashihei. You never even get to the third effect - lose 2 Honor. The only effect that will actually "go off" from Feign Death on Ashihei is the return-to-play effect. Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 June 2004", 14 Jun 2004 - Q: If I attach either a Senpet Scimitar or Yobanjin Wyrm to Hiruma Ashihei, does he become dishonored, or does his trait prevent the dishonoring? I'm saying no, unfortunately...
A: No. There is no Action producing a dishonoring effect. There is only a Trait on the Scimitar itself. Ashihei can't stop it. Martin Lund, "Rules for 30 May 2004", 2 Jun 2004 - Q: 1. If you Feign Death your Hiruma Ashihei, do you lose the 2 honor still, or does his trait preven that as well as the dishonoring?
A: It Cancels the Action the minute it tries to Dishonor him. Any unproduced effects simply aren't generated. Since lose 2 Honor is the last effect in the sequence, it wouldn't occur. Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 April 2004", 22 Apr 2004 - Q: Ok here is the situation:
A personality Iaijutsu Challenges Hiruma Ashihei Ashihei refuses the challenge
Now is the challenge cancelled before Kitsuki Iweko can use his reaction or will he have an opportunity to use it?
A: Clearly, the refusal itself needs to occur before the effects of refusing do, since the one causes the other. Iweko reacts to the refusal. Ashihei's trait responds to the effects of refusing. Iweko goes first. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 9-10 March 2004", 11 Mar 2004 - Q: I put a Blade of Penance on Hiruma Ashihei, he cancels being dishonored. So which is correct: #1 He never be able to attach Blade of Penance OR #2 He attaches the Blade of Penance, his trait cancels him being dishonored, he goes on to have a glorious career making 4 honor per duel won.
A: Blade of Penance may be attached, and because the dishonoring effect of Blade of Penance is not an action, Ashihei's trait does not protect him. This is a tentative ruling and may reverse. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 14 December 2003, Part 2", 15 Dec 2003 - Q: Iaijutsu Challenge - I refuse and instead of being dishonored and losing 7 honor, the action is canceled. Show... Stance - I strike and instead of being dishonored and sent home bowed, the action is canceled.
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 9 December 2003", 9 Dec 2003 - Q: I assume that Feign Death and Loyal Yojimbo can be played on [Hiruma] Ashihei when he's destroyed without dishonoring him, due to card text sequencing.
A: Yes to both. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 26 November 2003", 27 Nov 2003 - Q: If Hiruma Ashihei has a dark Covenant attached and I have an unbowed oracle in play, can I use dark covenant to straighten all my other personalities or will Ashihei prevent the straightening due to his trait?
A: This is a variation of the "Can Ashihei gain a force bonus from Frenzy?" question a couple of days ago. Both ask when Ashihei cancels the action. The answer is that Ashihei can cancel actions halfway through resolving, because effects occur in the order listed on the card, and everything goes normally until you get to the "dishonor a Personality" part. The action's then canceled, but not effects are undone.
To sum up.
Ashihei can gain a Force bonus from Frenzy.
Ashihei can be used to straighten Personalities with Drak Covenent without himself dying. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 24 November 2003, Part 2", 25 Nov 2003 - Q: If someone challenges Hiruma Ashihei to a duel and he refuses it would not dishonor him right?
A: Correct (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 31 October 2003", 31 Oct 2003
