Rules Q&A
- Q: Open Emotion [IvE, Rare] 0GC Bushido Virtue*Honesty Bushido Virtue Open: Rehonor a target Samurai. Bushido Virtue Open: Target your unbowed Samurai. Show a Strategy in your hand. Once this turn, while you are the Defender, you may take a Battle action from that card as an Engage action.
Insight [IvE, Rare] 0GC Dark Virtue*Insight Dark Virtue Battle: Target your Samurai. Look at the top three cards of any Fate deck. You may rearrange them. You may take an additional Battle action to play one of them that is a Battle Strategy.
If I target my Samurai with Open Emotion's 2nd open action and show Insight. I then choose to play Insight as my Engage action, looking at my opponent's Fate deck and pick a card with a Battle Strategy amongst them. What happens? Do I get to play that card immediately (as an Engage)? Or is the opportunity wasted and just gain an extra battle action to play that card after the Engagement phase?
A: The additional Battle action granted by Insight is taken as an additional action in the Engage Segment's Action Round.
For more information, see "Action Round" on p24 of the Comprehensive Rules, and "Additional actions" on p42. Alex Jones, "Strategies: Open Emotion + Insight", 25 Apr 2014 - Q: Indecision Reaction: After an action resolves, if its player has resolved two or more actions which put cards into his hand this phase: He discards two cards
Honesty of the Phoenix Battle/Open: Choose your performing unbowed Phoenix Clan Personality: Name a card. After the next resolution this turn of your action from another Strategy or Ring with that title, draw a card, and choose a player, who discards a card.
if i was to use Honesty several times nameing Ring of Void, then discarded or bowed the ring, am i right in thinking that my opponent can not play indecision as the timeing trigger has already passed?
A: After the resolution of Ring of the Void's action, your apply the delayed effects from the Honesty of the Phoenix, and draw cards. Then, players make take Reactions "After an action resolves", such as Indecision. By this point, you have "resolved two or more actions which put cards into [your] hand this phase", so Indecision's condition is met and as well as its trigger having occurred, so Indecision may be played, and you discard two cards.
See the Timing Sequence. Alex Jones, "Honesty of the phoenix Vrs Indecision", 20 Jun 2012 - Q: If I am facing a Phoenix Clan or Dragon Clan player and they resolve their virtue. Can I react with Isawa Kimi's reaction on the card they named (or card with that focus value) and force them to discard a card? Or does the draw come from the virtue and the window for Kimi's reaction has closed? Thank you!
Isawa Kimi: Reaction: Even if Kimi is bowed, after the resolution of an action that put any cards into another player's hand: That player chooses and discards a card from his hand.
Honesty of the Phoenix: Battle/Open: If you are a Phoenix Clan player, choose your performing unbowed Phoenix Clan Personality: Name a card. After the next resolution this turn from your action from another Strategy or Ring with that title, draw a card, and choose a player, who discards a card. Remove this card from the game.
A: The window would be closed at that point, as the draw is a delayed effect. Jon Palmer, "Isawa Kimi xp2 vs Honesty or Sincerity", 23 Apr 2012 - Q: Opponent's Bayushi Saya targets my honorable Samurai A,with PH 2, with her ability. I target Samurai A with Honesty using the ability: Bushido Virtue Open: Target one of your Samurai: Gain 1 Honor, or gain Honor equal to his base Personal Honor if your Family Honor is 9 or less.
What happens?
A: You gain the honor, then the action is considered resolved and Saya's effect triggers, dishonoring you and causing you an honor loss. Chris Fuchs, "Bayushi Saya and Honesty (clarified)", 19 Oct 2007 - Q: [3D] Silk and Shadow Palace: - with Honesty: at less than 9 Honor: Does it then gain honor equal to printed Chi or does the trait overwrite it with current Chi? - with Strength of the Divine: Can the trait be used to give the personality +2 Chi instead of +2 PH
A: 1. Printed Chi. The Stronghold only substitutes "Chi" for "PH". Nothing alters the preceding "printed" adjective.
2. No, giving a bonus to a stat is not "checking" it. The Stronghold can however have it check Chi for the MA. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 27 Oct 2026 - Q: I have a question about Honesty on this card. Is the "Draw a card" trait added to the Battle action of the Strategy or you draw a card when you turn the card face up?
A: Honesty traits on Strategies add their effect as a last, additional effect of the action. Brook Cunningham, "Onyx Lives #rules-questions", 23 Apr 2024 - Q: Regarding Honesty, when does the honesty effect of the card trigger? For instance, if I use Last Full Measure, it says "Honesty: Gain 2 honor" do I gain the honor when I turn the card face up? or do I gain the honor when I use the action? The card itself says the honesty effect is active when turned face up.
A: I don't have the Onyx Rules/datasheet handy, but I believe they state that Honesty traits on Strategies add their effect as the final effect the action on them.
I mean, if the card text specifically states conditions other than the Rules, that has precedence. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 20 Dec 2023 - Q: have question about timing, 1). Can I straighten from Honesty trait a personality that was targeted by either Dynasty/Open or Battle action? 2). Can I straighten from Honesty trait a personality and then use either Dynasty/Open or Battle action? Both are possible, or neither of them?
A: Honesty effects on a Strategy are added to its action's effects after all the others. So 1. is yes, 2. is no. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 12 Dec 2023 - Q: Another other question, about Honesty : is the card revealed face-up with the Honesty battle action stays face-up at the end of the turn ?
A: it remains face-up until an effect turns it face-down Jeremy Sumerlin, "Onyx Lives #rules-questions", 31 Aug 2023
