Rules Q&A
- Q: Hi,
If i use Isawa Chishaki's ability to toast himself and whoever... and then target him with Hope From Death, is he able to use this ability again when he is overlaid or is he still counted as the same card and denied re-use of it?
I can guess the answer but i thought i'd check
A: Card memory only resets after a card leaves play and is face down.
Chishaki is not face down while in the discard pile, thus the Once Per Turn rule applies to her ability. She will be unable to use her ability again that turn. Dan Jacobson, "Isawa Chishaki + Hope From Death", 7 Feb 2009 - Q: If I have a Doji "Obsidian Champion" Bob and a Doji Sue, and Doji Sue dies, I use Hope from death to overlay her onto Doji Bob, do the Obsidian Champion effects go away?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/Physically_marked_card_states#Overlaying:
"The underlying card’s attachments, tokens, and game state, including ongoing effects, also apply to the new stack, but this does not transfer or attach anything, or begin or end any game state on a card. Specifically, existing bonuses and penalties to the underlying card’s stats will transfer to the overlaying card."
Bob's dishonorable game state and all the ongoing effects of Arrival of the Obsidian Champion (Force/Chi bonuses/penalties, Fear ability, Shadowlands keyword) remain.
But make sure you do the math correctly! Sue's Force/Chi does not become 10/2. Whatever bonuses/penalities were needed to bring Bob's stats to 10F/2C will be applied to Sue, resulting in new numbers if her F/C are different than Bob's (including due to any bonuses and penalities of her own!). Brook Cunningham, "Arrival of the Obsidian Champion + Hope from Death", 16 Jan 2009 - Q: If one of my Moto "Obsidian Champion" Chai is destroyed, if I use Hope from Death, is he overlayed as an Obsidian Champion (with 10 Force, dishonored and his fear ability), or just as a Moto Chai ?
A: Yes, the overlaying "Obsidian Champion" would still have his Force/Chi bonuses/penalties, Fear ability, and Shadowlands.
Changes like these aren't "forgotten" unless the card leaves play and goes to an area where it is face-down (see here). That does not occur in your scenario.
EDIT: I originally answered the new "stack" would still be dishonorable! Wrong-o. The game-state of the new stack (like "honorable" or "dishonorable") is goverened by the underlying Personality (see rule quoted below). Sorry. Brook Cunningham, "Arrival of the Obsidian Champion + Hope from Death", 16 Jan 2009 - Q: 1. If one of my personnality is destroyed by a kill + determination (by losing a determinated duel, a determinated peasant veangeance,...), can I use death after life + determination to save his life ?
Thanks !
Determination : Dark Virtue Reaction: After you announce an action, target one of your Samurai: The action cannot have its effects negated or have its targeting changed. After the action destroys any Personality, remove him from the game.
Death after Life : Reaction: After one of your Personalities is destroyed during battle: Lose 5 Honor. Target a dead Personality in your discard pile, or in any discard pile if you are a Spider Clan player. Permanently give him Shadowlands and Undead. Bring him into play in your current army, ignoring restrictions (paying all costs).
2.Same question with Kill + Determination & Hope from death + Determination ? Thx.
Hope from Death : Reaction: After one of your Human Personalities is destroyed during battle, pay his gold cost unless you are a Phoenix Clan player: Overlay his card on one of your target Human Personalities at the current battlefield, ignoring title and experience levels.
A: No.
Determination's ongoing effect ("After the action destroys any Personality, remove him from the game") triggers before Reactions to the destruction. When the timing point for Reactions to the destruction is reached, that Personality is no longer in the discard pile, so he is not a valid target for Death After Life, although another dead Personality in your discard pile would be a legal target.
The case of Death After Life is slightly more complicated. It implicitly overrides the rule that cards in out-of-play areas are not affected by effects, but only for the discard pile since that is the default destination of destroyed cards. To affect a card which has been removed from the game, it would need to refer to that area explicitly.
See In and Out of Play.
Note that Determination applied to either Reaction is irrelevant, since Determination will only negate negatable effects. In the case of Death After Life it does not expand the range of targets; in the case of Hope after Death it does not negate rulebook restrictions. Alex Jones, "Determination + Death after Life", 16 Jan 2009 - Q: From this : viewtopic.php?f=59&t=65833 we have a perfectly clear statement about why the card overlayed on the created Emerald Champion stays in play.
But a friend of mine, while waiting this ruling to be made (I'm quite confused about the overlaying rules) pointed me toward that post : viewtopic.php?f=59&t=57601 And that one seems to says the direct opposite.
I was more inclined to see the thing the way Marty rules it, but now I'm confused again.
Thanks.
A: Fair enough
The junta will discuss this to make sure we've got a clear idea of what the carry-over on Delayed Effects is in this circumstance and update the CR as necessary. Martin Lund, "Hope From Death/Arrival of the EC/ Old ruling", 27 Feb 2008 - Q: (I)f I return that formerly-overlayed personality to play again using either Honorable Rebirth or Hope from Death, would he still have those inherited abilities from before(?)
A: Retained.
(Unless the card has somehow been face down and out of play; see http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Tracking_rule). Zen Faulkes, "Overlayed, Dead, and Honorable Rebirth", 1 Dec 2007 - Q: I use an action to kill my own Tokiko as a cost for something. She dies, but as a reaction to her death, I play Hope from Death and overlap someone in the current battle instead. Can I use the reaction on Tokiko to create the samurai card at her location, since she was momentarily not considered to be in play and re-entered play by overlapping another personality?
A: No. Rules, Card states, Overlay: "(A)n overlaying card is not entering play even if it comes from an out-of-play area(.)" Zen Faulkes, "Isawa Tokiko", 8 Jul 2007 - Q: The stack also inherits the underlying card’s base abilities, including ones that have been removed in the course of play. This is not considered an ability gain. The inherited ability on the new card is the same copy, and remembers whether it has been used.
...
The underlying card’s attachments, tokens, and game state, including ongoing effects, also apply to the new stack, but this does not transfer or attach anything, or begin or end any game state on a card.
A: Basically, overlaying rules say that the ability of the underlying card is absorbed into the overlaying card. It is considered the same ability and the overlaying card is considered to be the same card for the purposes of any effects that are still going on. Martin Lund, "Asako Masamichi and Hope from Death Revisited", 6 Jul 2007 - Q: If Asako Masamichi has used his ability, but is subsequently killed and brought back into play using Hope from Death, will his ability fail to keep the affected personality bowed?
Hope from Death
Reaction: After one of your Human Personalities is destroyed during battle, pay his gold cost unless you are a Phoenix Clan player: Overlay his card on one of your target Human Personalities at the current battlefield, ignoring title and experience levels.
Asako Masamichi
Battle: Bow a target Personality opposing Masamichi with less Chi. Before this battle resolves, if Masamichi is not at the current battlefield, straighten the target.
A: Rules, Effects, Durations: "Ongoing effects do not end if the card they came from leaves play." Zen Faulkes, "Asako Masamichi and Hope from Death", 6 Jul 2007 - Q: If I overlay a personality onto a "temporary" personality (like the personalities created by Shiba Ningen exp. 2), using a card like Hope from Death or Honorable Rebirth, will my overlaid personality go away when the temporary personality would go away(?)
A: Probably not, for reasons described here. (Fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "Overlaying and temporary personalities", 28 May 2007
