Rulings
- If he bows to pay a cost, effects that check for his stats will take into account the bonus he gains from being bowed. [JA, 11 December 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 102
- Only Chuichi adds to the force of his unit when he is bowed; unbowed Followers do not. [Reversal, JA, 1 August 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 102
Rules Q&A
- Q: Ok, say that I have Hoshi Chuichi out, and I play Purity of Spirit on an opposing Shadowlands personality. The card states "The caster need not bow if the target is Shadowlands". Can I bow him anyway, even though it says I need not?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 Feb. 2004", 26 Feb 2004 - Q: Playing the ring of Air is "after" sharing strength is played, so I can't use the Ring to straighten Hoshi Chuichi?
A: No. See Rules Archive, Ring of Air. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 5 December 2003, Part 2", 6 Dec 2003 - Q: Agasha Hamanari TDWWM Hoshi Chuichi, - Chuichi flee the darkness Hamanari is still live to use is reaction, and cancel flee?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2 December 2003, Part 2", 3 Dec 2003 - Q: Does anyone else think that Hoshi Chuichi is broken?
A: Undoubtedly. A very high proportion of cards have someone say that they're "broken" (whatever that means) at one point or another. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 18 November 2003, Part 2", 19 Nov 2003 - Q: If I have followers attached to Hoshi Chuichi or someone with a spider tattoo (so that the personality still contributes force while bowed), if the personality is bowed, is the unit's force equal to the personality and followers or just the personality?
A: The rules for determining whether or not a card contributes force during the resolution of a battle are as follows:
A bowed Follower does not add its Force to the unit.
No cards add to the Force of a unit when the unit's Personality is bowed. The unit's total Force is 0.
Bowing does not affect Follower bonuses with a "+" sign, Item bonuses of any kind, or Chi.
The only one of those three rules that Chuichi/Spider Tattoo could be contradicting is the second one. While bowed, Units led by Chuichi and Spider Tattooed personalities do not have a total force of 0 - the Force of their unit is calculated normally. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for June 12th", 12 Jun 2003 - Q: How much honor can I redirect with Hoshi Chuichi and the wind's truth? Only 4 or 6? (with his bonus for being bowed (+2F/+2C))
4. He needs to have a Chi at least equal to the honor's size when he bows, not after.
;;;;;
How about Chuichi and facing your devils? Would that be a chi of 4 or 6?
A: 6, because both the duel and the refusal occur after he is bowed. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 June 2003", 3 Jun 2003 - Q: How much honor can I redirect with Hoshi Chuichi and the wind's truth? Only 4 or 6? (with his bonus for being bowed (+2F/+2C))
A: 4. He needs to have a Chi at least equal to the honor's size when he bows, not after. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 May 2003", 30 May 2003 - Q: Second question on Hoshi Chuichi. Relevent text: Chuichi gains +2F/+2C while bowed. If Chuichi is casting Kihos whose effects depend upon his stats (ie. Chasing Osano-Wo or Facing Your Devils) do we check his stats before or after he bows?
A: If bowing is the cost, then after, since costs come before effects. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 December 2002", 12 Dec 2002
