Rules Q&A
- Q: So I'm toying around with some open cards and happened upon an interesting combo.
I'm using the original brotherhood of shinsei stronghold:
reaction: bow when you have fulfilled the conditions of putting an elemental ring into play. Retreive that ring from your fate deck and put it directly into play immediately. Reshuffle your fate deck.
I also have Hoshi Tadao in play: limited: one per turn put an elemental ring into play from your fate hand. The ring does not count towards an enlightenment victory. At the beginning of your turn two turns after this one shuffle it back into your fate deck.
I use Tadao's ability, (which fulfills the condition of putting a ring into play). In response I bow the stronghold and go and get the ring from my deck and put it into play. Is this legal?
A: Sure. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for June 23rd, 2003", 23 Jun 2003 - Q: Sorry guys about the earlier "More enlightenment questions" post earlier, what I really meant to post was "What happens to the Elemental Rings that HOshi Tadao puts into play when Solar Eclipse resolves, are they already considered to count towards an Enlightenment Victory? Or do they return to your hand or get shuffled back to your Fate deck?"
A: The effects "The Ring does not count towards an Enlightenment Victory." and " At the beginning of your turn, two turns after this one, shuffle it back into your Fate deck." are negated. Jeff Alexander, "post for 26 May 2003", 29 May 2003 - Q: Hoshi Tadao, his ability puts rings into play without meeting the normal requirements, is this considered to be without costs? or do I ignore the entering play requirement but still pay costs (honor loss)?
If I use his ability to put a dark ring into play do I still lose 5 honor?
A: I cannot think of any costs on any of the Rings. The Dark Rings cause honor losses, but these are not costs. They are effects of playing the Rings. Since Tadao plays Rings ("Once per turn, put an Elemental Ring into play from your hand."), the losses happen. Jeff Alexander, "post for 30 April 2003", 1 May 2003 - Q: Don't these two rulings directly contradict each other?
A: No. Show of Good Faith has no *explicit* directions on what to do at a given time; Hoshi Tadao does. Also, the Show of Good Faith ruling is in line with a long standing ruling that a swapped card in the discard pile stays where it is when the end of control effect ends.
Zen Faulkes! * Crab Clan Scholar * Veteran Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 21 April 2003", 22 Apr 2003 - Q: I remember this discussion a few weeks back, but as I was busy with other stuff I didnt really read it all the way through.
Do rings put into play with FTH and/or Hoshi Tadao count towards the elemental victory if Solar Eclipse goes off?
A: They count while Solar Eclipse is suppressing Spell effects and innate abilities, which, by MRP, is only until the end of the Event's first turn. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 November 2002", 6 Nov 2002 - Q: I like consistency. I'd like to see this phrase "This Ring does not count for an Enlightenment Victory" have one meaning regardless of what current or future card it appears on.
A: What you are more likely to see is the exact duration spelled out on the card. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 June 2002", 13 Jun 2002 - Q: [Elemental Limited: Once per turn, put an Elemental Ring into play from your hand. The Ring does not count towards an Enlightenment Victory. At the beginning of your turn, two turns after this one, shuffle it back into your Fate deck.]
1- If you play the 5th ring with his ability, do you get an enligthment victory? I see it as a possibility since the rulebook says "If you have all five Elemental Rings in play, you IMMEDIATELY win the game." and "The Ring does not count towards an Enlightenment Victory." is a different effect to putting it into play. Unless all effects are supposed to occur at the same time.
A: The Ring you play does not count. It's that simple. If you're trying to read more into it, you're trying too hard to win. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 May 2002", 8 May 2002
