Rules Q&A
- Q: 1) I have Hoshi's Claw on a dragon clan personality. I'm opposed by four crane personalities. One of the Crane personalities dies for some reason and the Crane player plays Be Prepared to Dig Two Graves.
I can't use Hoshi's Claw because it's not a bonus but a stat change.
A: Wrong. Dark Allies rules, page 31: No distinction between "bonus" and "stat change" exists in L5R. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 July 2002", 7 Jul 2002 - Q: I can use Hoshi's Claw once because the BPTDTG is one trigger[.]
A: Wrong. Hoshi's Claw happens "after an opposing Personality gains... a bonus." If more than one Personality gains a bonus, then there is more than one valid trigger. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 July 2002", 7 Jul 2002 - Q: I can use Hoshi's Claw three times because three personalities are getting force bonuses and therefore that counts as three triggers?
A: Right. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 July 2002", 7 Jul 2002 - Q: Next, how about errata stating that Hoshi's Claw may attach to a Hoshi Personality for two less Gold?
A: How about we not give the Dragon Clan Follower from AOF preferential treatment? Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 January 2002", 22 Jan 2002 - Q: The Claw is still usable. The Personality received a +0 bonus.
What happens if the card focused is Another Time, and the duel does not resolve. Does the bonus still occur?
A: Yes, since the focusing bonus begins immediately and Another Time does not end the duel until it's revealed. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 January 2002", 16 Jan 2002 - Q: If a personality enters a duel while Hoshi's Claw is attached to them, would they be able to use the Hoshi's Claw reaction if their opponent in the duel focuses?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 January 2002", 12 Jan 2002 - Q: The rulebook calls Focusing a "hidden bonus" and that's what Hoshi's Claw is looking for, but what about if somebody focuses a card with a Focus of zero?
A: The Claw is still usable. The Personality received a +0 bonus. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 January 2002", 12 Jan 2002 - Q: You speak sooth, but remember that an honor gain of zero is not always an honor gain in this game, and you'll see why I hesitated.
A: Um...close.
o An honor gain of 0 will not restore a dishonored Personality to honor. o An honor gain of 0 cannot be treated as an honor loss of 0. o An honor gain (or loss) which cannot be prevented also cannot be reduced to 0.
But there is no rule that a 0-point gain is sometimes treated as not a gain at all. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 January 2002", 12 Jan 2002
