Rules Q&A
- Q: Given the situation in this thread, I don't understand why the Rhetoric gain would not be reduced by Invocation. I thought Rhetoric created a new timing window of "before an honor gain/loss" for the player stealing the gain. This is why you can Rhetoric a Rhetoric. Also, this here directly references the creating of a new timing window for the redirected gain/loss in the instance of Hotei's Contentment increasing the gain. If Hotei's is able to increase the gain off of a redirected proclaim, shouldn't Invocation be able to reduce a redirected gain? Or is there something different between these situations that I'm overlooking.
Thanks
A: Because I misread the trigger on Invocation when answering. Read The... Card - it applies to the Rules Team too. Original answer corrected. Jon Palmer, "Invocation vs Rhetoric", 4 Jun 2013 - Q: Please confirm/deny?
Me and my opponent BOTH control Hotei's Contentment.
Player A Proclaims a 3PH base Personality. Player A's Hotei's Contentment triggers, to raise the gain to 4. Player B plays Rhetoric, bowing a 4 Chi courtier. Player B's Hotei's Contentment triggers, to raise the gain to 5. Player A plays Rhetoric, bowing a 5 Chi courtier. Player A's Hotei's Contentment raises the gain to 6. Player B passes priority.
Player A gains 6 honour for his 3PH Personality.
A: Sure. Essentially the same question asked here. Jon Palmer, "Rhetoric + Hotei's Contentment", 28 May 2013 - Q: Imperial Deployment: Open: Choose your performing Personality: The Empress dispatches him to the Colonies. Negate other players' cards' effects that prevent him assigning. After the next time this turn an attack is declared, straighten his unit. Hotei's Contentment: Open: Discard this card and target a Personality: He may not assign to, and will not move into, an attacking army. Accidental Confession: Open: Choose your performing unbowed Courtier, discard the Imperial Favor, and target a Personality: Dishonor him. His controller may not assign him, and he will not move, to battlefields this turn.
So, my question these three cards is a little arcane, but it did actually come up in our Kotei.
Hotei's and Accidental are worded slightly differently - one saying that a personality may not assign, and the other saying that the controller may not assign the personality. Since Imperial Deployment only negates effects that prevent the PERSONALITY from assigning, would it fail against Accidental Confession (since AC restricts player choices, not a card's ability to assign)? Or are the wordings on Hotei's and Accidental essentially interchangeable?
A: Essentially interchangeable. Brook Cunningham, "Imperial Deployment vs. Accidental Confession/Hotei's Conten", 23 May 2013 - Q: Does Hotei's Contentment let you Proclaim for 1 when you buy a 0 PH personality and proclaim?

A: If you use the Proclaim Reaction with a Personality with 0PH, you do not gain any honour, so Hotei's Contentment's trait does not trigger. Alex Jones, "Hotei's Contenment + 0PH", 7 Jul 2012
