Rules Q&A
- Q: Hi,
The combo of Hound of the Lost + The Face of Fear + Okura is Released is causing some arguments at my Saturday night game. Please clarify the following for me.
A: Why am I so forsaken? I - TRY - to be a good person. I paid my taxes on time. I'm not even running Corrupt. What could I possibly have done to deserve this? Martin Lund, "Rules for 14 April 2004", 15 Apr 2004 - Q: Do 'The Face of Fear' and 'Okura is Released' allow a personality with huge force to be targeted and destroyed by a smaller fear effect due to the effect from 'Hound of the Lost'?
A: Hound of the Lost says, "Reaction: Bow Hound of the Lost before another card in this army produces Fear targeting exactly one unit. The Fear targets and bows a single Follower of your choice in that unit, regardless of Force, instead of producing its normal effect."
Okura is Released says, "Reaction: Play this card when a fear effect is created. All cards bowing due to the fear effect are destroyed."
Face of Fear says, "Reaction: Play when one of your cards creates Fear. The Fear affects Personalities as if they were Followers."
Short answer is, "No."
The long answer is as follows:
They all respond to a card creating / producing a Fear Effect, but Hound of the Lost says "before" while the other two say, "when." Hound of the Lost gets played first and resolves first.
Now you've got to pick a target for your Fear effect. The only legal targets as per Hound of the Lost at this stage are Followers. You target a Follower with your special Fear.
Now you can play Okura is Released or Face of Fear.
Okura is Released will cause the Fear Effect to cause destruction.
Face of Fear will let your fear affect Personalities as if they were followers, but since it is only targeting a Follower, Face of Fear is pretty pointless. Martin Lund, "Rules for 14 April 2004", 15 Apr 2004 - Q: 2) My opponent has personality Bob and a bowed follower attached to Bob. I have Hound of the Lost, some random fear effect, and Citadel of Daigotsu. Can I use the fear effect on Bob's unit, react with Hound of the Lost to target the follower, and then use the Citadel of Daigotsu to "bow Bob regardless of force"?
A: That looks legal. The Hound will make the Fear bow the Follower regardless of Force, then the Citadel (which has to be used after the Hound due to wording) makes the Fear "also affect [Bob]". Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 March 2003", 18 Mar 2003 - Q: My question refers to the "Hound of the Lost" , a gold legal follower with the following text:
"Reaction: Bow Hound of the Lost before another card in this army produces Fear targetting exactly one unit. The fear targets and bows a single Follower of your choice in that unit, regardless of Force, instead of producing its normal effect."
Here's the question--
Let's suppose that I have 3 Hound of the Lost attached to a personality along with a single- Fear producing follower. When the Fear producer attempts to create Fear, can I react (one at a time) with all three of these Hounds, each time targetting a different follower in the targetted unit?
A: The Hound changes the Fear so it produces a new effect "instead of" its standard one. Once it's been changed, the Fear can no longer be changed to a new effect "instead of" the original again. Jeff Alexander, "post for 27 February 2003", 28 Feb 2003 - Q: Hound of the Lost Oni * Creature* Shadowlands * Lose 1 Honor. Reaction: Bow Hound of the Lost before another card in this army produces Fear targeting exactly one unit. The Fear targets and bows a single follower of your choice in that unit regardless of force, instead of producing its normal effect.
-Can I use fear effect+hound of the lost+the face of fear combo ?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 October 2002", 12 Oct 2002 - Q: I would just like to get confirmation that when a Citadel of Daigotsu player is trying to bow a personality via the SH trait, you may bow the Hound of the Lost to make the fear effect bow a personality regardless of their force. Is this correct or not?
A: It's not straightforward.
The Hound's reaction MUST be used first ("before another card in this army produces Fear" versus "When one of your cards is producing Fear"), and the Hound requires that you target one particular Follower in the unit the Fear is targeting. In order for you to use the Citadel's power as well, the target Personality must have no unbowed attached cards. So the combo is only legal against a unit that has no unbowed attached cards AND at least one bowed Follower. A: Correct. You cannot. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 August 2002", 22 Aug 2002 - Q: Hound Of The Lost So you cannot cancel it with Towers of the Asako?
