Rules Q&A
- Q: I target my weapon-wielding Kensai with Tamori Takeshi and send him off to an attack against Yoritomo Hiromi. Hiromi proceeds to use his Battle action and destroy the unit. I react to the targeting by playing Hundred-Fold Cut and destroying the weapon as a cost (it would be destroyed anyway). Does my Kensai survive the power of Thunder or not?
Relevant text:
Yoritomo Hiromi Bowing, destruction, and movement from Battle actions Hiromi performs will not be negated or delayed. Battle: Target an enemy card without attachments, or an enemy unit, with a lower total Gold Cost than Hiromi's unit: Hiromi strikes with the power of Thunder. Destroy the target.
Tamori Takeshi Open: Target your Personality: Takeshi helps him meditate. Effects of actions the target performs will not be negated.
Hundred-Fold Cut Reaction: After another player's action targets your performing Kensai, bow or destroy one of his Weapons: Negate his destruction from the action's effects.
A: "Will not be negated" is not itself negation, so Hiromi wins. Hundred-Fold Cut cannot save you. Brook Cunningham, "Tamori Takeshi vs. Yoritomo Hiromi", 4 Sep 2013 - Q: If I target a kensai with The Laws Strength, then react with Improper Papers at the correct time, is it already too late for the player to react with Hundred Fold Cut to negate the kensai's destruction?
A: This is correct. Hundred-Fold Cut reacts after targeting; Improper Papers reacts before an action's resolution.
In tournament play, you will need to give your opponent an explicit opportunity to play Hundred-Fold Cut. I've seen lots of players just throw down Law's Strength and Improper Papers together; your opponent must pass their opportunity to react to targeting before anyone gets the opportunity to react to movement. Jon Palmer, "The Laws Strength and Improper Papers vs Hundred Fold Cut", 15 Apr 2013 - Q: Say I use Power of the Night on a 3C weaponized personality and my opponent reacts with Hundred-Fold Cut. Is the 100FC able to negate the -3C delayed effect from PotN?
A: No. Brook Cunningham, "Power of the Night vs. "negate his destruction"", 9 Aug 2012 - Q: Does Kakita Ichigiku's trait add effects to the [consequences of the] duel that he initiates or is the destruction indepandant from said duel ?
This is important to know if actions that negate destruction from actions (like Hundred-Fold Cut) work against duels initiated by Ichigiku or not.
Kakita Ichigiku After Ichigiku challenges a dishonorable Personality during a Combat Segment: The challenge will not be refused; destroy that duel's loser in addition to other consequences of losing.
Hundred-Fold Cut (relevant text only) Reaction: After another player's action targets your performing Kensai, bow or destroy one of his Weapons: Negate his destruction from the action's effects.
A: No. Ichigiku's destruction is its own effect coming from Ichigiku, not the original action; the wording is there to show that the normal effects of the duel happen as well. Jon Palmer, "Kakita Ichigiku and negation", 28 Jul 2012 - Q: Regarding http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=98130, I note a problem.
For question 1, certainly after Player A had used Archery Range, Player B could react with Hundred-Fold Cut to negate the destruction.
However, for question 2, from this topic http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=98017&p=1293505&hilit=would+target#p1293505, it was clearly stated that "would target" comes before "after targeting." Thus, the window to use redirection would have passed.
A: Too busy rearranging the links to get both questions right!
Fixed. Brook Cunningham, "Targeting and redirection/negation", 28 May 2012 - Q: A) My 9F Kensai is targeted by a Ranged 5 Attack and I do not react to it with Hundred-Fold Cut, then my opponent plays a Sniping: can I now react with Hundred-Fold Cut to prevent my Kensai from dying or should I have reacted to the initial non-lethal Ranged Attack?
B) When my Kensai is dueled by a lethal duel(e.g. Steel on Steel), when do I use Hundred-Fold Cut to prevent him from dying: after losing the duel or when the duel is initiated?
Thank you for your time!
A: A) Both Sniping and Hundred-Fold Cut react "After targeting", so are both played in the same action round procedure for Reactions to after targeting, as described in Step D of the Timing Sequence.
B) Hundred-Fold Cut reacts after targeting, which is before the duel begins. Alex Jones, "Hundred-Fold Cut, Sniping, Duels", 17 Apr 2012 - Q: If I bow the weapon instead of the Kensai, does the Personality still performs the action?
Relevant text: Battle: Bow your performing Kensai or one of his Weapons: Draw two cards.
A: In this case "his" refers to "your performing Kensai", so yes, he is performing no matter how the bowing cost is paid. Jon Palmer, "Hundred Fold Cut - Battle Performing", 27 Mar 2012 - Q: Hey everyone,
Getting back into the game with EE and I have some questions with negation and unit destruction.
1. If I play A Stain Cleansed for example, an action that can destroy a unit, on a unit with The Mountain's Power:While this Shugenja is Earth and defending, negate his destruction from other players' cards' effects. does A. The unit get destroyed because it also destroys the spell. or B. The spell get destroyed and save the personality.
2. Kinda on the same premise, If I play a stain cleansed on a Kensai with one or two weapons attached can he play Hundred-Fold Cut to negate the destruction of the personality, or would killing the unit destroy the weapons so he cannot react?
Thanks for any response.
A: For #1, you work through all "before destruction" effects before any destruction actually occurs. Therefore, the spell is able to use its effect to save the Personality, although the spell itself and the rest of the cards in the unit are destroyed.
For #2, since Hundred-Fold Cut has a reaction trigger based off another player's action targeting, this is long before any destruction, and will also save the Personality. Jon Palmer, "Unit Destruction and negation", 14 Nov 2011 - Q: Can Hundred Fold Cut be played as a Reaction to Consumed by Five Fires in order to stop the Kensai's destruction?
A: Is this question asking if targeting a Unit the same as targeting a Personality?
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_U#Unit: "Targeting a unit is the same as targeting its Personality."
Or is there something else generating the question? Zen Faulkes, "Hundred-Fold Cut vs. Consumed by Five Fires", 21 Jan 2011
