Rulings
- The same Shugenja may be bowed and destroyed to pay the cost of the Spell. (Note that this ruling is specific to this card.) [JA, web, 1 June 2005] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 63
Rules Q&A
- Q: let's say you have an action (such as casting "I Give You My Name") that requires the destruction of a personality as a cost. If you have a reaction like "Glick" or "Feign Death" that simply reacts to the destruction by bringing the personality back, can you do that and still bring the Oni into play via the spell?
A: Glick does not react to the destruction of another card; the destruction of another goblin is a cost. You cannot pay two costs at once.
Feign Death, as currently worded, works, because the Personality is destroyed, thus satisfying the original cost. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 August 2003", 22 Aug 2003 - Q: I play I Give You My Name and I decide to get a Tsuburu no Oni from my deck or a Kyoso no Oni. Would I have to pay the cost of the Oni from being into play, it means, Would I have to sacrifice _another_ personality (for Tsuburu) or destroy a holding (for Kyoso)?
A: Careful. Not all oni are worded the same. Some have non-Gold costs (Tsuburo no Oni), and some have entering play effects (Kyoso no Oni). This can lead to rather different answers to what you might think is the same question.
In this case, the answer does turn out to be the same, because the only thing the spell waives are Gold costs and restrictions. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 19 August 2003, Part 2", 20 Aug 2003 - Q: If I use I Give You My Name to summon Tsuburu no Oni, how many personalities do I have to kill? 1 or 2?

I Give You My Name Maho Limited: Bow this shugenja and destroy one of your human Personalities to search for a non-Unique Oni from your deck or discard pile with a Gold cost less than or equal to the human's Gold cost plus this Shugenja's chi. Put the Oni into play, without Gold cost and ignoring play restrictions. Lose 2 Honor.
Tsuburu no Oni Unaligned Nonhuman Cavalry Shadowlands You must destroy one of your Personalities to bring Tsuburu no Oni into play. Lose 5 Honor. Tsuburu no Oni cannot attach Armor or Followers. Reaction: When the Battle Action Segment ends, if Tsuburu no Oni is attacking and no units are defending, Tsuburu no Oni gains +6F.
A: Destroying a Personality is a cost of playing Tsuburu no Oni. ("You must destroy one of your Personalities to bring Tsuburu no Oni into play.") I Give You My Name only removes the Gold cost of the Oni. You must still pay all remaining costs. You would need to destroy two Personalities total. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 May 2003", 14 May 2003 - Q: The cost is 4 gold, the 5 pnt honor loss is an entering play effect, and the killing of a personality is an entering play restriction.
A: I have to admit, I'm confused here. How can a restriction be something you DO? A restriction is some condition you have to meet. A question. A test. Something you DO has to be either a cost or an effect. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 May 2003", 14 May 2003 - Q: Does the choosing of a Personality to sacrifice for I Give You My Name occur simultaneously with the Shugenja's bowing to cast the spell or afterward. i.e. can you choose the casting Shugenja as the Personality to be sacrificed?
A: You may destroy the casting Shugenja. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 May 2003", 13 May 2003 - Q: 1.) Which of the following can I use Imperial Messenger against?
a.) someone bringing The Maw or other personality with associated honor loss into play b.) someone bringing a corrupt holding into play c.) someone bringing an Oni into play with I Give You My Name if the oni has an honor loss associated with it d.) Shosuro Yudoka's honor loss
A: All of them. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 May 2003", 9 May 2003 - Q: Are maho spells considered Shadowlands for the sake of determining if a deck is Tainted or Corrupt? For example, three Onis in a deck make it tainted; how about three Onis and three Maho spells such as I Give You My Name? Is it still Tainted or is it already considered corrupt?
A: It depends on the tournament and the story ramifications. One of the more recent guidelines is that Shadowlands and Maho cards both count towards corrupting a deck. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 May 2003", 3 May 2003 - Q: Can you play Make them Pay on an oni summoned with I Give You My Name?
A: Yes, if the Oni has a printed cost greater than 0. I Give You My Name says "put the Oni into play, without Gold cost". Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 April 2003", 29 Apr 2003 - Q: Do I have to destroy a seperate personality or can I destroy the Shugenja casting the spell?
A: You may destroy the Shugenja if you wish. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 October 2002", 24 Oct 2002 - Q: I'm asking because if, for example, I have Asahina Kimita in play and she casts I Give You My Name (using good old Megumi) can I fetch an Oni no Fushiki (or other 9GC or less oni)?
A: No, because the Oni costs 12 for you. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 October 2002", 18 Oct 2002 - Q: In reference to: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=98437&p
This post was never officially answered, though I was in a conversation where a member of the rules team was called on the phone and he had an interesting interpretation.
From what I overheard, the precedent set by a card some time ago indicated that the sacrificed person died...and then had his gold cost checked. Therefore the Coin Pouch would be gone and you are limited to the base gold cost of the person you sac'd. If this is the case please confirm, or reverse that ruling so that my Death Priests and Thunder Shugenja can summon bigger Onis please.
Coin Pouch: This Personality has +2 Gold Cost
I Give You My Name: Limited: Bow this Shugenja and destroy your target Human Personality: Search your Dynasty deck or discard pile for a non-Unique Oni with Gold Cost lower than or equal to the Human's Gold Cost plus the performer's Chi. Put the Oni into play, ignoring Gold cost. Lose 2 Honor.
A: That is correct. The gold cost check happens at the time that I Give You My Name says it happens; after the Personality has been destroyed, and the Coin Pouch is no longer attached. As much a Coin Pouch helps in summoning Onis in real life, it won't help your Death Priests or Thunder Shugenja. Jon Palmer, "Coin Pouch + I give you my name", 17 Jul 2012 - Q: If i use ' I give you my name to go get an oni' Can i react with ' Deeds and words' to reduce the entering play honor loss from my ony? Or will it only reduce the 2 honor loss from the spell?

Card Title Deeds and Words Cost 2 Text Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. Reaction: Before the resolution of an action during the Action Phase, destroy this card: Choose one of the Honor gains or losses from its effects. Reduce it to 0.
I couldnt find anything under the search functions for this situation
A: Entering play honor losses are from traits, not from actions.
Deeds And Words cannot be used to reduce them to 0, even if they happen in the Action phase. Ben Higgins, "i give you my name and deeds and words", 3 Jun 2012 - Q: I've Ten Thousand Temples in play and i'm going to use I Give You My Name to bring Ugulu no Oni in play. How much Family Honor i lose? 2 or 5?
Ten Thousand Temples Region Before you lose Honor, destroy this card: Negate the Honor loss.
I Give You My Name Spell Limited: Bow this Shugenja and destroy your target Human Personality: Search your Dynasty deck or discard pile for a non-Unique Oni with Gold Cost lower than or equal to the Human's Gold Cost plus the performer's Chi. Put the Oni into play, ignoring Gold cost. Lose 2 Honor.
Ugulu no Oni Personality After Ugulu enters play: Lose 5 Honor.
A: You will lose 2 honour.
Working through the effects of I Give You My Name, you put Oni no Ugulu into play, causing you to lose 5 honour, but Ten Thousand Temples negates this loss. You then move to the next effect of I Give You My Name and lose 2 honour. Alex Jones, "Ten Thousand Temples and honor loss from I Give You My Name", 16 Jan 2012 - Q: Is a personality still being "played" when they're brought in through card effect (Fires in the Hidden City, I Give You My Name, A Wish Granted, etc)? Or do they enter play through some other means? What about if they're coming back from a Suitengu's Surge?
A: For Personalities, played is pretty much synonymous with entering play. Zen Faulkes, ""Playing" personalities", 21 Mar 2005
