Rules Q&A
- Q: I Know That Trick (the ability I'm asking about): Battle: Choose your performing Personality: A number of simultaneous Ranged 1 Attacks up to his Force.
Flee the Darkness: Reaction: After another player targets one of your Personalities with a Battle action, bow your performing Monk or Shugenja: Negate the action's effects.
I attack with a 6F personality, my opponent defends with 4 1F personalities, one of which is a Shugenja.
I play IKTT for a total of (say) 6 RA1s.
I want to resolve/target them in sequence and start with the 3 non-Shugenja personalities, then have the other 3 RAs target the Shugenja.
My opponent wants to play Flee when I target his Shugenja and cancel the whole thing.
What happens?
a) All RAs are targeted at the same time, and Flee cancels everything before a single RA resolves b) Since the RA target is optional (not required), I don't target when I announce IKTT but only upon resolution, where each RA is resolved in sequence. Flee only cancels the first RA that targets the Shugenja and the two last subsequent RAs c) Same as b) but Flee is still able to negate all effects (destruction) of the RAs that targeted the non-Shugenja personalities d) Segmentation Fault. We have to restart the game.
Thanks,
Jose
A: From the Glossary, Ranged Attack: Simultaneous Ranged Attacks are targeted at the same time, then their effects are applied at the same time.
Flee the Darkness is played after any of the Ranged Attacks is targeted, before any of the effects are applied, so all the Ranged Attacks are negated. Alex Jones, "I Know That Trick vs. Flee the Darkness", 17 Oct 2012 - Q: viewtopic.php?t=57964
Attempting to be more clear and specific.
Can a player using Castle of the Wasp combine a ranged attack from I Know That Trick with a ranged attack printed on another personality? With another I Know That Trick performed by another personality? Does the fact that the personalities are producing the ranged attack rather than the player (such as with Tsuruchi Techniqu) matter here?
A player using Castle of the Wasp has three copies of Moshi Amika out; A, B and C (A has some force boosting item, rendering her at 3 force). A performs the first battle action on I Know That Trick. May one of the resulting ranged attacks be combined with B, and one with C? (For an end result of simultaneous Ranged 5, Ranged 5, Ranged 1)
Same situation as abover, but with Moshi Amika and Moshi Amika xp. May one of the IKTT ranged attacks be combined with Moshi Amika xp's first battle action, and one with Moshi Amika xp's second battle action? (For an end result of simultaneous Ranged 7, Ranged 7, Ranged 1)
Thanks!
A: It's basically word for word the same question as previously posted (and answered!) in http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=48829&highlight=trick+combine.

II") Chris Fuchs, "Combining Ranged Attacks (3)", 8 Jun 2007 - Q: I use I KNow That Trick with 3 personalities in the battlefield, target a Randon Crab and and Hida Benjiro (Experienced) issues me a challenge and kill the initial target of my action. The rule allow me to choose a new target to dishonor and create the ranged attack( further resources).
A: This is hard to interpret, since I Know That Trick has two abilities. I'm assuming you are referring to the first one, and that your opponent controls Hida Benjiro (Experienced).
If that's the case....
If you targeted your Personality, the cost is paid, regardless of whether the Personality is destroyed in the duel started by Hida Benjiro (Experienced), so the effects still happen. There is no need to try to pay again.
Lotus rules, pg. 44: "Destroying or otherwise removing a card from play after costs have been paid for an action on it does not negate that action’s effects." Zen Faulkes, "Another costs question...", 28 May 2007 - Q: Question about the card " I know that trick". Format OBH. I target my 10 force guy I can produce 10 range 1s. The oracle has some added text about combining the range attacks. I'm curious what is allowing the range attacks to be combined? Is there a ruling about range attacks somewhere in a late edition that allows RA to be combined when coming from a single card?
Follow up. So that means I could shoot 5 range 2s. Correct?
A: Attacks from Strats cannot normally be combined under most-current Rules. However, in Lotus, RAs from Strats were being "produced" by the performer. Thus, what the Oracle text allows you to do is combine them with other attacks from the performer's unit as per the most-current combining Rules as if they were "from" the performer, but not with each other (combined Attacks each must be from a different card in the unit). So, no 5 sets of RA2s. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 23 Jan 2025
