Rulings
- Although they create no effects, Items are still present and may be used to trigger effects that look for those items (e.g., Mirumoto Zenko, Unprepared). [JA, 22 October 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 21
- Effects of actions on items that give bonuses or penalties before a duel begins (e.g., Corrupted Jade Sliver) are not negated. [JA, email, 1 August 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 21
Rules Q&A
- Q: My question is, if you use CJS to up your CHI, then challenge/accept/etc. a Lesson, then does your force/chi revert to what it was before you started messing with them with CJS? Or does Lesson only care about the "direct" +/- on the item's stastics and not effects caused by them before the challenge and duel?
A: Play it as written. Do not calculate any bonuses or penalties from Items. That includes the bonuses of Corrupt Jade Silver's ability. Martin Lund, "Rules for 30 May 2004", 2 Jun 2004 - Q: If I cast Written in Blood on a base 2 Chi personality with a Clan Sword, and then play Iaijutsu Lesson targeting them (and they accept, volutarily or otherwise) do they instantly die for being 0 Chi?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 March 2004", 26 Mar 2004 - Q: Personality X has the Corrupt Jade Sliver attached.. Uses it 3x to get +6 to Chi. X issues an Iaijutsu Lesson to someone. Does he still have +6 Chi?
A: Yes. See Rules Archive, Actions, Iaijutsu Lesson. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 29 September 2003", 30 Sep 2003 - Q: Personality X still has the Mask Attached... Personality Y issues an Iaijutsu Lesson. Personality Y has the Shadowlands Trait. Does he receive the +1/+1 bonus?
A: No bonus. Iaijutsu Lesson doesn't say, "The Personalities *own* items give no bonuses;" it says they give no bonuses, period, to anyone, anywhere, while the duel is going on. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 29 September 2003", 30 Sep 2003 - Q: if I have a Mirumoto Tokeru in play with 2 weapons attached and I challenge someone to a [Iaijutsu] lesson, do I get the double chi trait?
A: Yes. The weapons are still attached. The effect is written on Tokeru, and Iaijutsu Lesson cares only about what's written on the weapons. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 14 July 2002", 14 Jul 2002 - Q: May you use Iaijutsu Art and Iaijutsu Lesson to target your own Personalities? Iaijutsu Challenge has a ruling which prohibits this, but Art and Lesson do not (that I have found).
A: Two of your own Personalities cannot challenge each other or enter duels against one another. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 February 2002", 22 Feb 2002
