Rules Q&A
- Q: Two rules questions that have been bugging me for a while:
1. Is "The Deathless" a Naval card? It has Naval printed specifically in boldface in its traits area, thus it follows the "rulebook definition." (Page 33, An Oni's Fury Rulebook, "Abilities and Traits") However, a judge ruled against me at the Region 12 Kotei, stating that it could not be bowed for two actions via Kyuden Gotei as it "specifically handed out the Naval trait, but did not have it itself." (Memory's fuzzy, was a week or two ago.) Have since played other opponents that have argued for and against....possible to get a final ruling here?
A: Well, anything's possible. The Deathless has a trait that has the word Naval in it, and it's even in boldface. However, the precedent is that a Keyword, even a boldface one, that is part of a sentence trait, doesn't count for giving that trait. This goes way back, to when The Nameless One came out and people wondered whether or not he had the Shadowlands trait.
So, no. The Deathless is not Naval. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for June 11th - Part Two!", 12 Jun 2003 - Q: hi , i have some question about this spell : Type Spell Title Follow the Path Rarity/Edition U An Oni's Fury Text Battle: Bow this Shugenja to move a Follower from one Personality to another controlled by the same player. Gold 3 Focus 3 Artist Christina Wald
1.- i have a shugenja with this spell in my fief and one of my personality in battle opposing by two personality (one bowed and one unbowed with a follower ) and my opponent have one personality in him fief , Can i move the follower from unbowed personality to bowed personality?
A: Let's see.
Do you satisfy the Rule of Presence? Yes -- you have a unit in the current battle.
Do you satisfy the Rule of Relevance? Yes -- you are targeting at least one card in the battle (the Follower).
Does Follow the Path say anything about requiring the shugenja to be in the battle? No.
It's legal! Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 June 2002", 15 Jun 2002 - Q: Just a couple quick questions. We know that XP Yasuki Hachi (An Oni's Fury) can be overlayed over Yasuki Hachi (Gold Edition), and we know that Yasuki Hachi (Gold Edition) counts as Daidoji Hachi (Spirit Wars).
A: They count against each other for deck construction. That's it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 March 2002", 2 Mar 2002 - Q: So can XP Yasuki Hachi (An Oni's Fury) be overlayed over Daidoji Hachi (Spirit Wars)?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 March 2002", 2 Mar 2002 - Q: You *have* seen An Oni's Fury, haven't you?
Yep, and Unicorn still has no personalities to compare with either Riake's or Sunetra's abilities.
A: My bad. See, this is what happens when you're the designer: you remember the wrong cards, you remember the wrong versions of cards, you remember cards that people haven't seen yet... Apparently Unicorn had more movement in the early days of Oni's Fury's design, and that's coloring my recollection.
Maneuverability, and not just during assignment, is still one of the areas we want Unicorn to excell in on the Big Board of Design. They're going to keep getting boons in that department. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 February 2002", 20 Feb 2002 - Q: Page 61 of An Oni's Fury rulebook states that players lose a personality's printed personal honor when they are destroyed while dishonored. So someone with a Dragon's Claw Katana would not lose the extra personal honor gained from having it attached.
Correct?
A: Correct. They would not. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 February 2002", 20 Feb 2002 - Q: Page 61 of AOF rulebook(relevent text)
"Sometimes Personalities may destroy themselves by committing seppuku. If this happens, the Personality dies honorably, with no Honor loss, and becomes Honorable Dead regardless of whether or not he >or she was Dishonored."
Page 61 and 64 of An Oni's Fury rulebook seem to disagree with one another. The quote above from page 61 states that there is no honor loss. On 64 under the Special Traits/Samurai, it says that the honor loss is reduced to 1.
Which is correct?
A: Both. They're dealing with two different things.
Page 61 says that when a Personality dies through seppuku of any kind, he is restored to Honor and dies Honorably, therefore there is no loss of honor from dying Dishonorably.
Page 64 says that when a samurai chooses to commit seppuku in response to being involved in a loss of Honor to the samurai's controller, that triggering loss is reduced to 1. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 February 2002", 14 Feb 2002 - Q: 2) Below are two posts from Dave and Jeff that are compleatly opposing to eachother. Can we have a clarification of the correct rule please?
A: They're not opposites. Any extra restrictions on the Fear, like only being able to bow tokens or humans, sticks with it when the Citadel extends it to Personalities. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 December 2001", 14 Dec 2001 - Q: So since the Dragon tat is attached to the ancestor, does this mean that you can add three fire tokens to your personality every turn?
A: No. Tattoos possessed (not "attached" -- tattoos technically go into the discard pile after being played) by the Ancestor are treated as being on his Personality if the Personality does not have them already. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 December 2001", 13 Dec 2001 - Q: You can bow Kitsune Gohei to destroy a personality that does not have unbowed cards attached.
That is correct.
Are you sure about that? The cost for Gohei's effect is bowing, and the cost for the Citadel effect of affecting the personality also requires bowing. How can he do both at the exact same time?
A: It's not my week for Shadowlands cards, is it?
No, Kitsune Gohei can't bow twice in the same action. He can't be used with the Citadel's special effect. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 December 2001", 13 Dec 2001 - Q: Hi. I really need help with this, because I am getting seriously confused here.
I left L5R right after Honor Bound, for reasons of economic nature. :)
Now I'm trying to get back in, and so have been trying to find out what is out there to buy. Seeing as most people is playing gold legal now, I decided to catchup on the gold collections. This means Gold Edition, A Perfect Cut, An Onis Fury when it comes out, the HOR set I cannot buy because I am not in the assembly, and that's it. But I call an online store and buy 6 different Gold Ed+clan decks and they tell me that there are only 3. Then I go to alderac page and download the gold checklist, only to find out 16! strongholds in GE, two in+SW (is this spirit wars? where do I get this, it seems noone carries it anymore) and one in HOR. APC doesn't have the card types, but I believe it has 3 clans, crab crane and scorpion.
This is a mess... can anyone please help me? :)
A: Gold Edition has eight Clan Deck faction boxes, each of which has two different Strongholds included. That's where the figure of 16 comes from. These 16 include two of the three Strongholds from Spirit Wars, so you don't need to look for SW (at least for Strongholds). Heroes of Rokugan has one, which will be reprinted someday. A Perfect Cut has three brand new ones in deck boxes (Crane, Crab, and Scorpion) plus a fouth dual-aligned Crab/Crane one packed only as a random rare card. That gives a current grand total of 21. An Oni's Fury will have three more brand new ones for Dragon, Unicorn, and Shadowlands. Jeff Alexander, "post for 26 November 2001", 27 Nov 2001 - Q: Will there be a card list for An Oni's Fury posted to the AEG website anytime soon? I remember the list for APC being posted ahead of it's release and was wondering if the same was going to happen for AOF. Thanks.
A: AOF's list will not go onto the website before the set's formal release date. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 November 2001", 22 Nov 2001 - Q: Let's see... Shadowlands a potent faction today... An Oni's Fury... sounds like Shadowlands become the top slice of bread. Am I off base here?
A: Way. It's just a title. (A word-for-word identical title to a card that HURT Shadowlands, at that.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 30 October 2001", 31 Oct 2001 - Q: Akasha and the Hunting Tiger become legal when APC does, which is October 4th (hey, that's TODAY!). None of the others have been formally released yet, so it's hard to say. Any released before An Oni's Fury will become legal when it does.
Is this a reversal, Jeff? I have an e-mail stating that Akasha becomes legal >with An Oni's Fury. (Of course, considering the tournament I play in tommorow, >I'm probably the only one who had a chance to play in a Season before, so I'm >not playing her, but it does make a difference.)
A: Ray Lau tells me the official release date of A Perfect Cut was September 4th, and I have it from Dave Lapore that Season of the Unicorn kits began delivery in late August. That means Akasha was formally released before A Perfect Cut was. She should be legal when it is. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 October 2001", 6 Oct 2001 - Q: When do the following become "Tournament legal?" <iai snip> Akasha:
When An Oni's Fury becomes legal.
Uh ? I thought the Seasons of the Unicorn package mentioned that Akasha was immediately legal in the accompanying booklet ?
A: I just re-read it. It says she's legal in your LEAGUE if you run your Season of the Unicorn event as a league, and that's it. It specifically says she's not immediately legal if you run it like a normal tournament, and otherwise does not address her legality. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 17 September 2001", 18 Sep 2001
