Rules Q&A
- Q: if i have Ide Michisuna in play, and i shame a samuri, they commit sepukku and i take his reaction to cancel it what exactly happens
do they lose 1 honor + personal honor
do they lose 7 + personal honor
or neither
A: Seppuku reduces the loss to 1 and restores the samurai to honor. Michisuna prevents the re-honoring but not the reduction to 1. If the samurai was dishonored, her player would lose 1 + Personal Honor. If she was not, he would lose only 1. Jeff Alexander, "post for 27-28 May 2003", 29 May 2003 - Q: So then Toku would commit seppuku before the "dishonor Toku" effect occurred, right? The 7 pt loss happens before the dishonoring, as it is printed first on the card.
Yes, though it shouldn't matter. Seppuku also negates any dishonoring to the Personality coming from the same source as the honor loss. I *thought* this was in the Dark Allies rulebook. Apparently I'm mistaken.
Ide Michisuna would be why it could matter, as he negates the re-honoring effect of seppukku, and Toku's controller would lose 2 honor.
A: Not if Toku is already dead and in the discard pile, which is the case if Toku seppukus when the action first targets him or when the honor is lost. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 November 2002", 13 Nov 2002 - Q: I shame a dishonoured samurai (Mirumoto Shiryu lets say, a samurai with 3ph) he seppukus and I react with the Ide.
The rulings conflict with the personality, does the Ide over-ride the rules as explicitly stated and as such can he react to seppuku even though the stated event(target personality is being restored to honor) never occurs?
A: First cardinal rule: card text takes precedence over general rules. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 July 2002", 12 Jul 2002 - Q: I do have a question about Misahuna[.] [Why] did a Unicorn get that ability?
A: Perhaps because no faction has exclusive claim to any single mechanic? It may also be a reflection of the magisterial arm of the Unicorn clan. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 July 2002", 12 Jul 2002 - Q: next if you used Ide Michisuna with the new seppuku rules what would happen? Since the rules sy the always die honorable and become honorable dead. but he as a reaction stops the rehonoring?
A: Someone who is Dishonored, commits seppuku, and is prevented from being restored to Honor will still die, and since he is still Dishonored he will cause the Honor loss that Dishonored Personalities normally cause when they die. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 February 2002", 14 Feb 2002 - Q: Ok, say I have Ide Michisuna in play [Reaction: Bow Michisuna when a target Personality is being restored to honor to negate the re-honoring. (If the Personality was committing seppuku, the Personality dies dishonorably and causes an honor loss as normal.)], and somebody plays Shame on a dishonored samurai with a printed Personal Honor of 2. The samurai chooses to commit seppuku to reduce the honor loss to 1 (as per the rules), but I bow Michisuna, so he doesn't die honorably. The samurai causes an honor loss of 2 (based on dying dishonored, as per normal rules), but what happens to the honor loss created by Shame? Does the player lose another 7 for Shame (since the seppuku kinda failed), or does he lose 1 (as if the seppuku went through like normal), or what?
A: 1. The restoration to honor was negated, nothing else. The reduction of Shame's loss from 7 to 1 still happens. The player would lose 3 Honor, total. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 January 2002", 24 Jan 2002 - Q: If Akasha I. Challenges Hida Kuon (PH1), who refuses and commits seppuku, and Ide Michisuna reacts, does the Crab player lose 2 honor or 8? In other words, since Michsuna "negates the re-honoring", is he also negating the ability to reduce the honor loss from 7 to 1?
2. Only the restoration to honor is negated. The reduction of the loss from 7 to 1 still happens.
You might want to think about that one... From Zen's archive:
Iaijutsu Challenge * Reads, "Iaijutsu Challenge 0G 2FV Limited: One of your Personalities challenges a Personality. If the challenged Personality's controller refuses the challenge, he or she loses 7 Honor and this card dishonors the Personality." etc
The honour loss occurs before Hida Kuon is dishonored, so if Kuon commits seppuku in response to the honour loss, he isn't dishonored, and Ide Michisuna has nothing to react to.
A: Interesting. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 October 2001", 17 Oct 2001 - Q: If Akasha I.
A: 2. Only the restoration to honor is negated. The reduction of the loss from 7 to 1 still happens. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 October 2001", 16 Oct 2001
